How desk sizes work

A desk is sized by its width and depth in inches, and its area in square feet is the width times the depth divided by 144. The desk also needs room around it: 2 ft of walkway on the length and 3 ft of chair clearance on the width, so the required length is the desk width in inches divided by 12 plus 2 ft, and the required width is the desk depth in inches divided by 12 plus 3 ft. The desk fits when the room length is at least the required length and the room width is at least the required width. The leftover space is the room length minus the required length and the room width minus the required width. The largest desk that fits is the table row with the greatest area whose required space fits the room. This is a size and fit chart, NOT a foundation, permit, or zoning chart: check your local rules before you build, because a built-in desk may need a permit and a setback that is bigger than the clearances here.

At the defaults — a 10 × 8 ft room and a computer desk 60 × 30 in — the required length is 60 ÷ 12 + 2 = 7 ft and the required width is 30 ÷ 12 + 3 = 5.5 ft, and 10 ≥ 7 and 8 ≥ 5.5, so it FITS. The leftover space is 10 − 7 = 3 ft of length and 8 − 5.5 = 2.5 ft of width. The largest desk that fits is L-shaped desk 60×60 in (25.00 sq ft), because it needs 7 × 8 ft and the room is 10 × 8 ft. The desired desk is 12.50 sq ft.

The worked example, line by line

Setup: available room 10 × 8 ft, desired desk computer desk 60 × 30 in, walkway 2 ft, chair clearance 3 ft.

Line 1 — the required space. 60 ÷ 12 + 2 = 7 ft of length and 30 ÷ 12 + 3 = 5.5 ft of width.

Line 2 — the fit. 10 ≥ 7 and 8 ≥ 5.5, so it FITS.

Line 3 — the leftover space. 10 − 7 = 3 ft of length and 8 − 5.5 = 2.5 ft of width.

Line 4 — the largest desk that fits. L-shaped desk 60×60 in (25.00 sq ft): it needs 7 × 8 ft, and the room is 10 × 8 ft.

Reverse: the smallest room for a writing desk is 6×5 ft; for a computer desk 7×5.5 ft; for a standing desk 6×5.5 ft; for an L-shaped desk 7×8 ft; for a corner desk 6×7 ft; for an executive desk 8×6 ft; for a secretary desk 5×4.67 ft; for a kids desk 4.67×4.67 ft; for a drafting table 5.5×5.5 ft; for a reception desk 8×5.5 ft. The largest desk for a 10×8 ft room is L-shaped desk 60×60 in (25.00 sq ft); for an 8×6 ft room Executive desk 72×36 in (18.00 sq ft); for a 12×10 ft room L-shaped desk 60×60 in (25.00 sq ft); for a 6×5 ft room Writing desk 48×24 in (8.00 sq ft).

Every branch, checked

Room 8 × 6 ft, computer desk: the required space is 7 × 5.5 ft, and 8 ≥ 7 and 6 ≥ 5.5, so it fits, with 1 ft of length and 0.5 ft of width left over. The largest desk that fits is Executive desk 72×36 in (18.00 sq ft).

Room 12 × 10 ft, executive desk: the required space is 8 × 6 ft, and 12 ≥ 8 and 10 ≥ 6, so it fits, with 4 ft of length and 4 ft of width left over. The largest desk that fits is L-shaped desk 60×60 in (25.00 sq ft).

Room 6 × 5 ft, writing desk: the required space is 6 × 5 ft, and 6 ≥ 6 and 5 ≥ 5, so it fits exactly, with 0 ft left over on both sides. The largest desk that fits is Writing desk 48×24 in (8.00 sq ft).

Room 10 × 8 ft, L-shaped desk: the required space is 7 × 8 ft, and 10 ≥ 7 and 8 ≥ 8, so it fits, with 3 ft of length and 0 ft of width left over. The largest desk that fits is L-shaped desk 60×60 in (25.00 sq ft).

Room 10 × 8 ft, standing desk: the required space is 6 × 5.5 ft, and 10 ≥ 6 and 8 ≥ 5.5, so it fits, with 4 ft of length and 2.5 ft of width left over. The largest desk that fits is L-shaped desk 60×60 in (25.00 sq ft).

What the defaults assume

The model assumes the available length and width you enter, 2 ft of walkway on the length and 3 ft of chair clearance on the width, and the standard desk sizes in the table. It assumes the desk sits with its width along the room length and its depth along the room width: turning the desk round is the same check with the two numbers swapped, and the calculator does not do it for you, so try both ways if the desk is close. It assumes the room is a rectangle and the floor is level. It leaves out the foundation, the permit, the zoning setback, the framing, and the door swing, which needs clear space in front of the desk. At exactly its required space every desk fits, and 1 ft less on the length or on the width it does not fit. With a 5 × 4 ft room no standard desk fits, because the smallest needs a 4.67 × 4.67 ft space. With a 4 × 3 ft room no standard desk fits either. Rounding convention: all lengths are in feet, areas are in square feet, the kids desk is 4.44 sq ft (32 × 20 ÷ 144), and all figures are computed from the numbers you enter, rounded only for display.

Who uses this

  • The homeowner with a 10 × 8 ft room: they learn a computer desk 60×30 in needs a 7 × 5.5 ft footprint and it fits, with 3 ft of length and 2.5 ft of width left over — so they know the desk fits and the largest they can have is the L-shaped desk, and they check the 25.00 sq ft before ordering the corner unit.
  • The homeowner with an 8 × 6 ft room: they learn the corner desk does not fit — the width is 1 ft short — so they know to buy the executive desk instead, and they check the 8 × 6 ft space it needs before measuring the office.
  • The homeowner with a 12 × 10 ft room: they learn the largest desk that fits is L-shaped desk 60×60 in (25.00 sq ft) — so they know the biggest standard size fits, and they check the 7 × 8 ft space it needs before framing the home office.
  • The small-room owner with a 6 × 5 ft room: they learn the largest desk that fits is Writing desk 48×24 in (8.00 sq ft) — so they know an L-shaped desk will not fit, and they check the 6 × 5 ft space it needs before buying the writing desk.

Accuracy & limitations

The math is exact for the numbers you enter: the required space is the desk width in inches divided by 12 plus 2 ft of walkway by the desk depth in inches divided by 12 plus 3 ft of chair clearance, the fit is the room against the required space, and the largest desk is the greatest-area chart desk that fits. The L-shaped desk uses a 60×60 in bounding box for the fit check: the usable surface is two 60×24 in arms in an L, so the corner of the bounding box is empty floor, and the desk may fit a room the bounding box says it does not if the empty corner holds the door or the chair. What the model cannot do is measure your room: check the length and the width, because a room that is not a rectangle may have less usable space than the numbers say. It assumes 2 ft of walkway and 3 ft of chair clearance and a level rectangle, and it leaves out the foundation, the permit, the zoning setback, the framing, and the door swing. It assumes the desk sits with its width along the room length: try both ways if the desk is close. When two desks tie on area, the first row in the table wins. For the closet the desk sits beside, see closet size chart; for the deck board the desk sits on, see deck board size chart.

Method: desk area in sq ft = width (in) × depth (in) ÷ 144; required length = desk width (in) ÷ 12 + 2 ft of walkway; required width = desk depth (in) ÷ 12 + 3 ft of chair clearance; fits when the room length is at least the required length and the room width is at least the required width; leftover = room − required on each side; largest desk that fits = the table row with the greatest area whose required space fits (ties: first row in table order). Frequently asked questions

What size desk do I need for two monitors?

A computer desk 60×30 in (12.50 sq ft) at the smallest. Two monitors need about 48 in of width and 24 in of depth for the stands, and a 60×30 in desk leaves room for the keyboard and the tower. It needs a 7×5.5 ft room. A writing desk 48×24 in (8.00 sq ft) fits one monitor and a laptop, but two monitors crowd it.

How much room does a desk need around it?

2 ft of walkway and 3 ft of chair clearance. The required length is the desk width in inches divided by 12 plus 2 ft, and the required width is the desk depth in inches divided by 12 plus 3 ft. A computer desk 60×30 in needs a 7×5.5 ft room, and an L-shaped desk 60×60 in needs a 7×8 ft room. The 3 ft is for pulling the chair out and standing up behind it.

What is the largest desk that fits my room?

The table row with the greatest area whose required space fits. In a 10×8 ft room the largest is an L-shaped desk 60×60 in (25.00 sq ft), because it needs 7×8 ft and the room is 10×8 ft. In an 8×6 ft room it is an executive desk 72×36 in (18.00 sq ft). In a 12×10 ft room it is an L-shaped desk (25.00 sq ft), and in a 6×5 ft room it is a writing desk 48×24 in (8.00 sq ft).

What room do I need for an L-shaped desk?

7×8 ft at the smallest. An L-shaped desk 60×60 in needs 2 ft of walkway and 3 ft of chair clearance, so the room must be at least 7 ft long and 8 ft wide. A corner desk 48×48 in needs 6×7 ft, an executive desk 72×36 in needs 8×6 ft, and a writing desk 48×24 in needs 6×5 ft. That is the smallest room that fits the desk at all, with no room left over.

Why does my corner desk not fit an 8×6 room?

It is 1 ft short on the width. A corner desk 48×48 in needs a 6×7 ft space, and an 8×6 ft room is 7 ft deep on one side and 6 ft on the other — the width is 1 ft short. The largest desk that fits an 8×6 ft room is an executive desk 72×36 in (18.00 sq ft), which needs 8×6 ft. Turn the corner desk round and it still does not fit: the desk is 48 in deep and needs 7 ft of width, and the room is only 6 ft wide.

Is this chart a foundation, permit, or zoning guide?

No — it is a size and fit chart only. It does not cover foundations, permits, or zoning: check your local rules before you build, because a built-in desk may need a permit and a setback from the property line that is bigger than the clearances here. A desk also needs a level floor, and a bigger desk may need framing and a door that this chart does not size.
