How closet sizes work
A closet is sized by its footprint in feet, and its area in square feet is the width times the depth. The rod matters as much as the size: a single rod at 66 in takes shirts and pants, a double rod at 42 and 84 in takes two rows of clothes, and a walk-in has rods on two or three walls. The closet also needs access: 2 ft in front, so the required footprint is the closet width by the closet depth plus 2 ft. The closet fits when the available length is at least the required width and the available width is at least the required depth. The leftover space is the available length minus the required width and the available width minus the required depth. The largest closet that fits is the table row with the greatest area whose required footprint fits the space. This is a size and fit chart, NOT a foundation, permit, or zoning chart: check your local rules before you build, because a walk-in closet may need a permit and a setback that is bigger than the 2 ft of access here.
At the defaults — a 14 × 12 ft space and a walk-in medium 7 × 10 ft closet — the required footprint is 7 ft wide by 10 + 2 = 12 ft deep, and 14 ≥ 7 and 12 ≥ 12, so it FITS exactly. The leftover space is 14 − 7 = 7 ft of length and 12 − 12 = 0 ft of width. The largest closet that fits is Walk-in medium 7 × 10 ft (70 sq ft), because a walk-in large 10 × 12 ft needs 10 × 14 ft and the space is only 12 ft wide. The desired closet is 70 sq ft.

The worked example, line by line
Setup: available space 14 × 12 ft, desired closet walk-in medium 7 × 10 ft, access 2 ft in front.
Line 1 — the required footprint. 7 ft wide and 10 + 2 = 12 ft deep.
Line 2 — the fit. 14 ≥ 7 and 12 ≥ 12, so it FITS exactly.
Line 3 — the leftover space. 14 − 7 = 7 ft of length and 12 − 12 = 0 ft of width.
Line 4 — the largest closet that fits. Walk-in medium 7 × 10 ft (70 sq ft): a walk-in large 10 × 12 ft needs 10 × 14 ft, and the space is only 12 ft wide.
Reverse: the smallest space for a walk-in large 10 × 12 ft closet is 10 × 14 ft; for a reach-in 8 ft closet 8 × 4 ft; for a walk-in small 5 × 7 ft closet 5 × 9 ft; for a linen 3 ft closet 3 × 3.5 ft. The largest closet for a 14 × 12 ft space is Walk-in medium 7 × 10 ft (70 sq ft); for a 10 × 8 ft space Reach-in 8 ft (16 sq ft); for a 20 × 15 ft space Walk-in large 10 × 12 ft (120 sq ft); for a 6 × 5 ft space Reach-in 6 ft (12 sq ft).
Every branch, checked
Space 10 × 8 ft, walk-in medium 7 × 10: the required footprint is 7 × 12 ft, and 10 ≥ 7 but 8 < 12, so it DOES NOT FIT — the width is 4 ft short. The largest closet that fits is Reach-in 8 ft (16 sq ft), which needs 8 × 4 ft.
Space 20 × 15 ft, walk-in large 10 × 12: the required footprint is 10 × 14 ft, and 20 ≥ 10 and 15 ≥ 14, so it fits, with 10 ft of length and 1 ft of width left over. The largest closet that fits is Walk-in large 10 × 12 ft (120 sq ft). A big space takes the biggest standard closet.
Space 8 × 6 ft, reach-in 4 ft: the required footprint is 4 × 4 ft, and 8 ≥ 4 and 6 ≥ 4, so it fits, with 4 ft of length and 2 ft of width left over. The largest closet that fits is Reach-in 8 ft (16 sq ft).
Space 6 × 5 ft, reach-in 6 ft: the required footprint is 6 × 4 ft, and 6 ≥ 6 and 5 ≥ 4, so it fits, with 0 ft of length and 1 ft of width left over. The largest closet that fits is Reach-in 6 ft (12 sq ft).
Reverse — the other way round: the smallest space for a walk-in large 10 × 12 ft closet is 10 × 14 ft; for a reach-in 8 ft closet 8 × 4 ft; for a walk-in small 5 × 7 ft closet 5 × 9 ft; for a linen 3 ft closet 3 × 3.5 ft.
What the defaults assume
The model assumes the available length and width you enter, 2 ft of access in front of the closet, and the standard closet sizes in the table. It assumes the closet sits with its width along the available length and its depth along the available width: turning the closet round is the same check with the two numbers swapped, and the calculator does not do it for you, so try both ways if the closet is close. It assumes the space is a rectangle and the floor is level. It leaves out the foundation, the permit, the zoning setback, the framing, and the door swing, which needs clear space in front of the closet. With a 4 × 3 ft space no standard closet fits, because the smallest needs a 3 × 3.5 ft space. With a 5 × 4 ft space the largest closet that fits is a Wardrobe 5 ft (10 sq ft) — the linen closet also fits, but the wardrobe is bigger. Rounding convention: all lengths are in feet, areas are in square feet, the coat closet is 9.32 sq ft (4 × 2.33), and all figures are computed from the numbers you enter, rounded only for display.

Who uses this
- The homeowner with a 14 × 12 ft space: they learn a walk-in medium 7 × 10 ft closet needs a 7 × 12 ft footprint and it fits exactly, with 7 ft of length and 0 ft of width left over — so they know the closet fits and it is the largest they can have, and they check the 70 sq ft before ordering the rods.
- The homeowner with a 10 × 8 ft space: they learn the walk-in medium does not fit — the width is 4 ft short — so they know to buy the reach-in 8 ft closet instead, and they check the 8 × 4 ft footprint before measuring the bedroom.
- The homeowner with a 20 × 15 ft space: they learn the largest closet that fits is Walk-in large 10 × 12 ft (120 sq ft) — so they know the biggest standard size fits, and they check the 10 × 14 ft space it needs before framing the dressing room.
- The small-bedroom owner with a 6 × 5 ft space: they learn the largest closet that fits is Reach-in 6 ft (12 sq ft) — so they know a walk-in will not fit, and they check the 6 × 4 ft footprint before buying the double rod.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is exact for the numbers you enter: the required footprint is the closet width by the depth plus 2 ft, the fit is the space against the required footprint, and the largest closet is the greatest-area chart closet that fits. What the model cannot do is measure your space: check the length and the width, because a space that is not a rectangle may have less usable space than the numbers say. It assumes 2 ft of access in front and a level rectangle, and it leaves out the foundation, the permit, the zoning setback, the framing, and the door swing. It assumes the closet sits with its width along the available length: try both ways if the closet is close. When two closets tie on area, the first row in the table wins — a reach-in 4 ft and a kids’ reach-in 4 ft are both 8 sq ft, and the reach-in 4 ft is listed first. For what a garage costs to fit beside it, see garage size chart; for the shed the closet sits beside, see shed size chart.
