Christmas tree size calculator
Put your ceiling height and topper allowance in: a 9 ft ceiling with a 1.00 ft allowance fits an 8 ft tree, 4.40 ft wide.

On the defaults — a 9 ft ceiling with a 1.00 ft allowance — the tree to buy is 8 ft tall and 4.40 ft wide. This is the tree-size tool: measure the room once, and buy a tree that fits with room for the topper, not one that has to be trimmed at home.
Put your ceiling height and topper allowance in: a 9 ft ceiling with a 1.00 ft allowance fits an 8 ft tree, 4.40 ft wide.
It means the tallest tree the room takes is eight feet, and a tree that tall spreads about four feet five inches across at its widest. The foot of allowance is not wasted space: the stand lifts the tree a few inches, and the topper needs room above the top branch, so a tree that touches the ceiling has no room for either. The width matters as much as the height — an 8 ft tree needs a clear circle nearly four and a half feet across, or its lower branches press against the furniture.
| Output | Formula | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Tree height | ceiling − allowance | 8 ft — 9 − 1.00. |
| Tree width | tree height × 0.55 | 4.40 ft — 8 × 0.55. |
| Headroom left | allowance itself | 1.00 ft — topper plus stand. |
| Width-to-height ratio | typical full tree | 0.55 — a full tree is about half as wide as tall. |
First, measure the ceiling at the tree spot, not the room average: a beam, a fan or a sloped ceiling can cut a foot off the usable height. Second, measure the floor space too: a 4.40 ft wide tree needs that much clear floor, plus room to walk around it. Third, remember the tree height on the label is the tree alone — the stand adds a few inches underneath, which is exactly what the allowance is for, so do not spend the allowance twice.
9 ft ceiling, 1.00 ft allowance. Tree height: 9 − 1.00 = 8 ft. Tree width: 8 × 0.55 = 4.40 ft. In the shop, look for a tree labelled 7 to 8 ft, not a 9 ft tree: the 9 ft tree plus its stand and topper would press against the ceiling, while the 8 ft tree leaves the full foot of headroom for the angel and the stand.
With an 8 ft ceiling instead of 9 ft, the tree drops to 7 ft and the width to 3.85 ft. With a 10 ft ceiling, the tree rises to 9 ft and the width to 4.95 ft. With a 1.50 ft allowance, the tree drops to 7.5 ft and the width to 4.13 ft — the right call for a tall topper. With a 0.50 ft allowance, the tree rises to 8.5 ft and the width to 4.68 ft — fine for a small topper and a low stand, but tight for anything grand.
The ceiling behind the 8 ft tree is 9 ft: at 8 ft the tree is 7 ft wide 3.85 ft; at 10 ft the tree is 9 ft wide 4.95 ft. The allowance behind the 8 ft tree is 1.00 ft: at 0.50 ft the tree is 8.5 ft wide 4.68 ft; at 1.50 ft the tree is 7.5 ft wide 4.13 ft. Each reverse moves one input and holds the other, so the step from neighbour to neighbour is exactly one foot of ceiling or half a foot of allowance.
The defaults assume a 9 ft ceiling, a 1.00 ft allowance for topper and stand, and a full tree about 0.55 times as wide as it is tall. They do not assume a slim tree, a sloped ceiling, or a ceiling fan above the tree spot; for a slim tree, expect a narrower width than 4.40 ft, and for a fan or beam, measure to that obstacle instead of the ceiling.
The arithmetic is exact for the inputs entered; the judgement is the allowance and the width ratio. Real trees vary: a slim fir can be much narrower than 0.55 times its height, and a full spruce wider. The allowance is a planning figure, not a measurement — a tall topper or a high stand needs more than 1.00 ft. Treat the width as the space to clear, and measure the actual tree at the lot before it goes in the car.

An 8 ft tree, 4.40 ft wide, after a 1.00 ft allowance for the topper and stand. Buy a tree labelled 7 to 8 ft, not 9 ft — the stand and topper need that last foot.
About 4.40 ft across for a full tree, using the 0.55 width ratio. A slim tree will be narrower; clear a circle of at least 4.40 ft and the tree will fit either way.
Part of the 1.00 ft allowance: the stand lifts the tree a few inches and the topper sits above the top branch. A tall angel or star wants a 1.50 ft allowance, which drops a 9 ft ceiling tree to 7.5 ft.
To the lowest obstacle above the tree spot — a beam, a fan or a fitting. The tree must clear that point, not the ceiling average, or the topper will not fit.
No: height and width work the same for both. The live vs artificial Christmas tree calculator compares cost and effort; this tool sizes whichever tree you pick.
Measure at the tree spot, at the lowest point the tree will stand under. A sloped ceiling can cut a foot or more off the usable height on one side of the room.
