Z-Score Calculator: z, Percentile & Probability Above

On the defaults — x = 85, mean 70, standard deviation 10 — the z-score is 1.50, the percentile is 93.32% and 6.68% of values sit above. Put in a value, a mean and a standard deviation and the calculator finds the z-score, the percentile and the probability above and below. This one standardizes a value in one place: the p-value-calculator page is the P-VALUE — the significance of a test statistic — not the z-score of a value; the standard-deviation-calculator page is the SPREAD — how far the numbers sit from the mean — not how many standard deviations one value is from it; the mean-median-mode-calculator page is the AVERAGE — the mean, median and mode of a dataset — not the standardized position of one value; and the probability-distribution-calculator page is the DISTRIBUTION — normal, binomial and Poisson probabilities — not the z-score behind them. No z-score calculator exists on this site — this one is the first.

Z-Score calculator

A z-score is a value minus the mean, divided by the standard deviation: how many standard deviations the value sits from the average. On the defaults — x = 85, mean 70, standard deviation 10 — the z-score is 1.50, the percentile is 93.32% and 6.68% of values sit above. A z-score of 0 is exactly average, a positive one is above the mean, and a negative one is below it — and the percentile is the share of values below, from the normal curve. The calculator shows all of it with notes, never hides it.

The value to standardize — the default is 85.

The mean of the distribution — the default is 70.

The standard deviation — the spread — the default is 10. It cannot be zero.

z = 1.50; 93.32% below, 6.68% abovez = 1.50; 93.32% below, 6.68% abovez = 1.50; 93.32% below, 6.68% above. 85 minus 70 is 15.00, divided by 10 is 1.50 (unrounded 1.500000) — 93.32% of values fall below, 6.68% above.

What does z = 1.50 mean?

It means 85 sits one and a half standard deviations above the mean of 70 — and 93.32% of values in the distribution fall below it, while 6.68% sit above. A z-score turns a raw value into a position: 0 is exactly average, 1 is one standard deviation above, -1 is one below, and the percentile is the share of values below, read off the normal curve. The same z-score means the same position whatever the units — 85 on a test with mean 70 and sd 10 is the same standing as 115 on a test with mean 100 and sd 10.

Three things to check before you trust the number

The mean and the spread both matter. A z-score of 1.50 needs both: 85 minus 70 is 15, and 15 divided by 10 is 1.50. The same value against a mean of 80 is z = 0.50, and against a spread of 5 it is z = 3.00 — the same number, three different standings. If the mean or the spread is wrong, the z-score is wrong with it.

The percentile assumes the normal curve. 93.32% is the area under the bell curve up to z = 1.50, so it is only as good as the distribution being roughly normal. On a skewed distribution — incomes, house prices — the percentile is a rough guide, not a count, and the z-score itself still tells you how far from the mean the value sits in spread units.

A z-score of zero is average, not nothing. z = 0 means the value is the mean, and the percentile is 50.00% — half the values below, half above. A negative z-score is below the mean, not a mistake: x = 60 against a mean of 70 is z = -1.00, 15.87% below, the mirror of x = 80.

Worked example

On the defaults: x = 85, mean 70, standard deviation 10.

  1. Subtract the mean: 85 − 70 = 15.
  2. Divide by the standard deviation: 15 ÷ 10 = 1.50 — the z-score.
  3. Read the percentile: the area under the normal curve up to 1.50 is 93.32%.
  4. Take the share above: 100 − 93.32 = 6.68%.
  5. Smallest value for a z-score of at least 2: 90 — at 90 z is 2.00 (unrounded 2.000000, percentile 97.72%), and at 89.5 it is 1.95 (unrounded 1.950000, percentile 97.44%).
  6. Smallest value for a percentile of at least 95%: 86.5 — at 86.5 z is 1.65 (unrounded 1.650000, percentile 95.05%), and at 86 it is 1.60 (unrounded 1.600000, percentile 94.52%).

Every branch, checked

The reverses, worked backwards

What the defaults assume

The defaults are x = 85, mean 70, standard deviation 10 — a test score 15 points above the mean with a 10-point spread — and the z-score is 1.50, the percentile 93.32% and 6.68% above. They are a starting point, not a benchmark: your value may be a height, a salary or a lap time, and the right answer for you is the one your numbers describe. Change the value, the mean and the spread to your own and the calculator recomputes instantly. Subtract the mean, divide by the spread, and read the percentile off the curve.

These notes repeat in every explainer section because this page is built to be read start to finish: the defaults are one value, not a standard; the mean and the spread both matter; the percentile assumes the normal curve; and a z-score of zero is average, not nothing.

Who uses this

Accuracy & limitations

The calculator does the arithmetic exactly — the z-score is the value minus the mean over the standard deviation, and the percentile is the normal CDF at that z-score, good to 1.5e-7 — and every figure on this page is checked against an independent model. What it cannot do is check that your distribution is normal: the percentile is the area under the bell curve, so on a skewed distribution it is a rough guide, not a count, and the z-score itself still tells you how far from the mean the value sits in spread units. It also takes one value at a time — a whole dataset needs the mean-median-mode-calculator page or the standard-deviation-calculator page first. And the page prints the unrounded figures so the rounding does not mislead you — z = 1.50, unrounded 1.500000, percentile 93.32%, unrounded 93.319277%.

Smallest value for the percentile to reach at least 95%: 86.5. Largest standard deviation for the z-score to reach at least 2: 7.5. Largest value for the z-score to stay at or below 1.5: 85. Largest mean for the z-score to reach at least 2: 65. Smallest value for the share above to be at most 5%: 86.5. Source: Bright Side Kit, brightoolbox.com.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a z-score?

Subtract the mean from the value and divide by the standard deviation: (85 - 70) / 10 = 1.50. Put your own value, mean and spread into the calculator above and it works out the z-score, the percentile and the probability above and below.

What does a z-score of 1.50 mean?

It means the value sits 1.50 standard deviations above the mean — 93.32% of values fall below it and 6.68% above. A z-score of 0 is exactly average, and a negative z-score is below the mean.

How do I find the percentile from a z-score?

Read the area under the normal curve up to the z-score: z = 1.50 is the 93.32nd percentile, z = 2.00 is the 97.72nd, and z = 0 is the 50th. The calculator above does it for any z-score.

What is a good z-score?

There is no good or bad — it depends on what you want. On a test, z = 1.50 is the top 7%; in quality control, anything beyond z = 3.00 is a signal to look at the process. The z-score only tells you where the value stands.

Can a z-score be negative?

Yes — a negative z-score is below the mean. x = 60 against a mean of 70 is z = -1.00, 15.87% below, the mirror of x = 80 at z = 1.00. The sign tells you the direction, the size tells you how far.

What if the standard deviation is zero?

Then there is no spread to divide by, so there is no z-score: every value equals the mean. The calculator says so plainly instead of giving you a number you cannot use.

How do I find the value for a z-score of 2?

Work backwards: value = mean + z × standard deviation, so 70 + 2 × 10 = 90. The smallest value for a z-score of at least 2 is 90 — at 89.5 the z-score is 1.95. The calculator's reverses list the value for each common target.

Is a z-score the same as a p-value?

No — a z-score is a position, a p-value is a probability about a test. But they are linked: a two-tailed p-value of 0.05 is z = 1.96, and the p-value calculator finds the p-value for any z-score, one-tailed or two-tailed.
