How high should an upper cabinet be?
On the default — a standard upper cabinet 54 inches above the floor — the height is 137.16 cm from the floor to the cabinet, 18 inches above a 36-inch countertop. The bands are low 48 to 53 inches, standard 54 to 66 inches and high 67 to 72 inches — closed at both ends — and the gaps match no standard type: 53.01 to 53.99 inches and 66.01 to 66.99 inches fall between the bands, and anything below 48 inches or above 72 inches matches no standard type either.
Three things about the chart are worth stating plainly.
First, the centimetres are the inches times 2.54: 54 × 2.54 = 137.16 cm. Second, 54 inches is the bottom of the standard band — the cabinet bottom, 18 inches above a 36-inch countertop, the height every kitchen fitter starts with. And third, the bands are a guide, not a rule: the right height depends on how tall you are, what the cabinet holds, and whether you reach it every day or once a week — all listed in Accuracy & limitations.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: height 54 inches.
Line 1 — the conversion. 54 × 2.54 = 137.16 cm.
Line 2 — the band. 54 inches sits between 54 and 66, so the type is standard upper cabinet.
Line 3 — the check. At 67 inches the height is 170.18 cm and matches a high upper cabinet; and at 66.99 inches it is 170.15 cm and matches no standard type.
Every branch, checked
48 in: 48 in = 121.92 cm; matches low upper cabinet (1 type) — 48 inches is the bottom of the low band.
52 in: 52 in = 132.08 cm; matches low upper cabinet (1 type) — 52 inches is inside the low band.
56 in: 56 in = 142.24 cm; matches standard upper cabinet (1 type) — 56 inches is inside the standard band.
60 in: 60 in = 152.40 cm; matches standard upper cabinet (1 type) — 60 inches is inside the standard band.
64 in: 64 in = 162.56 cm; matches standard upper cabinet (1 type) — 64 inches is inside the standard band.
68 in: 68 in = 172.72 cm; matches high upper cabinet (1 type) — 68 inches is inside the high band.
Centimetre bars — 50 in, 58 in, 66 in: 50 in: 127.00 cm — low upper cabinet; 58 in: 147.32 cm — standard upper cabinet; 66 in: 167.64 cm — standard upper cabinet — 50 inches is low, 58 inches is standard, 66 inches is standard.
The reverses, worked backwards
Smallest height for the cm figure to reach 120.00 cm: At the displayed 47.25 in the figures are 47.25 in = 120.02 cm (unrounded 120.0150 cm); matches no standard type. At 47.25 inches the centimetres are 120.02 cm (unrounded 120.0150 cm) — above 120.00. At 47.24 inches the centimetres are 119.99 cm (unrounded 119.9896 cm) — below 120.00 — so 47.25 inches is the smallest height for the cm figure to reach 120.00 cm. Note that 47.25 inches itself matches NO standard type — it sits below the 48-inch low band.
Largest height for the cm figure to STAY at or below 140.00 cm: At the displayed 55.11 in the figures are 55.11 in = 139.98 cm (unrounded 139.9794 cm); matches standard upper cabinet (1 type). At 55.11 inches the centimetres are 139.98 cm (unrounded 139.9794 cm) — below 140.00. At 55.12 inches the centimetres are 140.00 cm (unrounded 140.0048 cm) — above 140.00 — so 55.11 inches is the largest height for the cm figure to stay at or below 140.00 cm.
Smallest height to match a standard upper cabinet: At the displayed 54.00 in the figures are 54 in = 137.16 cm (unrounded 137.1600 cm); matches standard upper cabinet (1 type). At 54 inches the height is 137.16 cm and matches a standard upper cabinet. At 53.99 inches the height is 137.13 cm (unrounded 137.1346 cm) and matches no standard type at all — so 54.00 inches is the smallest height to match a standard upper cabinet.
Smallest height for the cm figure to reach 150.00 cm: At the displayed 59.06 in the figures are 59.06 in = 150.01 cm (unrounded 150.0124 cm); matches standard upper cabinet (1 type). At 59.06 inches the centimetres are 150.01 cm (unrounded 150.0124 cm) — above 150.00. At 59.05 inches the centimetres are 149.99 cm (unrounded 149.9870 cm) — below 150.00 — so 59.06 inches is the smallest height for the cm figure to reach 150.00 cm.
Largest height for the cm figure to STAY at or below 160.00 cm: At the displayed 62.99 in the figures are 62.99 in = 159.99 cm (unrounded 159.9946 cm); matches standard upper cabinet (1 type). At 62.99 inches the centimetres are 159.99 cm (unrounded 159.9946 cm) — below 160.00. At 63.00 inches the centimetres are 160.02 cm (unrounded 160.0200 cm) — above 160.00 — so 62.99 inches is the largest height for the cm figure to stay at or below 160.00 cm.
Smallest height to match a high upper cabinet: At the displayed 67.00 in the figures are 67 in = 170.18 cm (unrounded 170.1800 cm); matches high upper cabinet (1 type). At 67 inches the height is 170.18 cm and matches a high upper cabinet. At 66.99 inches the height is 170.15 cm (unrounded 170.1546 cm) and matches no standard type at all — so 67.00 inches is the smallest height to match a high upper cabinet.
A warning about the neighbours: every neighbour above sits one hundredth of an inch from the star, and every neighbour centimetre figure displays as the target when rounded to two decimals, yet sits below or above it. The centimetres are the inches times 2.54, so every reverse has an exact closed form: the height that reaches a centimetre target is the target divided by 2.54. The page prints the unrounded centimetres in full so the rounding does not mislead you: 120.0150, 119.9896, 139.9794, 140.0048, 137.1346, 150.0124, 149.9870, 159.9946, 160.0200 and 170.1546.

Who uses this
- The homeowner hanging wall cabinets: they learn 54 inches above the floor is 137.16 cm — the cabinet bottom, 18 inches above a 36-inch countertop — and they check the 67-inch reverse to see where the high cabinet starts.
- The kitchen fitter quoting the job: they learn the standard zone runs 54 to 66 inches, covering the usual cabinet heights — and they check the 47.25-inch reverse to see the smallest height that reaches 120.00 cm.
- The renter working out the reach: they learn 48 inches is the bottom of the low band at 121.92 cm — and they check the 53.5-inch edge to see why a cabinet in the gap matches no standard type.
- The student learning kitchen layout: they learn the standard counter is 36 inches and the cabinets start 18 inches above it — and they check the 54.00-inch reverse to see why the upper-cabinet standard ends at 66 inches, not 72.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is first-principles: the centimetres are the inches times 2.54 — the figure displayed to two decimals half-up — and the bands are closed at both ends: low 48–53 in, standard 54–66 in, high 67–72 in. At 53 inches the cabinet is low, at 66 inches it is standard and at 72 inches it is high. Heights between the bands (53.01–53.99 in and 66.01–66.99 in) match NO standard type — the bands have gaps, they are not continuous — and heights of 73 in and above, and below 48 in, match NO standard type either. At 47.24 inches the centimetre figure is 119.9896 cm — it displays as 119.99 cm — and at 55.12 inches it is 140.0048 cm — it displays as 140.00 cm. At a negative height the figure is floored to 0.00 cm and matches no standard type, never a negative number. What the model cannot do is fit your kitchen: the right height depends on how tall you are, what the cabinet holds, and how deep the cabinet is — and it says nothing about studs, fixings or how much weight the cabinet can carry. The countertop is assumed to be the standard 36 in — if yours is higher or lower, the 18-in gap starts from a different place. Use it to find the standard heights — then hold a plate where you cook and check the reach before you drill.

Frequently asked questions
How high should an upper cabinet be?
54 inches above the floor for the cabinet bottom. A standard upper cabinet mounts 54 inches above the floor — 137.16 cm — 18 inches above a 36-inch countertop. The standard band runs 54 to 66 inches.
How do I convert upper cabinet height from inches to centimetres?
Multiply the inches by 2.54. 54 × 2.54 = 137.16 cm. 48 inches is 121.92 cm, and 66 inches is 167.64 cm.
What is a standard upper cabinet height?
54 to 66 inches above the floor. The standard zone covers the usual cabinet heights, from the cabinet bottom 18 inches above the counter to 30 inches above it. 54 inches is the bottom of the standard band and 66 inches is the top.
What is a high upper cabinet?
67 to 72 inches above the floor. The high zone is step-stool height. 67 inches is 170.18 cm, and 72 inches is 182.88 cm — the top of the high band.
What height is too low for an upper cabinet?
Below 48 inches. Below 48 inches the cabinet crowds the counter workspace and matches no standard type. 48 inches itself is low, at 121.92 cm.
Why does the upper-cabinet standard end at 66 inches, not 72?
Cabinets are enclosed boxes, shelves are open. The upper-cabinet standard zone ends at 66 inches because cabinet doors swing down into the workspace, so the cabinet cannot sit as high as an open shelf. The kitchen-shelf standard runs to 72 inches because a shelf has no door to swing down.
What if my cabinet is 53.5 inches high?
It matches no standard type. 53.5 inches is 135.89 cm and sits in the gap between the low band (48 to 53 inches) and the standard band (54 to 66 inches) — the bands have gaps, they are not continuous.
How is an upper cabinet different from a kitchen shelf?
The box. An upper cabinet is an enclosed box with doors, measured by its bottom edge above the floor, with bands low 48 to 53 inches, standard 54 to 66 inches and high 67 to 72 inches. A kitchen shelf is open, with bands low 42 to 53 inches, standard 54 to 72 inches and high 73 to 84 inches. Work it out in the kitchen shelf height chart.
