| Output | Formula | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Tip | bill × rate | $10.00 at 20% on a $50 bill. |
| Total | bill + tip | $60.00 at 20% on a $50 bill. |
| Per person | (bill + 20% tip) ÷ people | $30.00 each on a $100 bill split 4 ways. |
Every cell is computed to the cent with standard rounding. Etiquette says to tip on the pre-tax subtotal; many people tip on the total and that is socially fine (the difference is about $1.60 per $100 of tax). Auto-gratuity (usually 18–20% for parties of 6+) and service charges are not tips to the server — scan the bill before tipping twice. Counter-service screens now default to 20/25/30%; tipping there is optional.
Bright Side Kit. "Tip Chart 2026: 15%-25% on Any Bill." https://brightoolbox.com/tip-chart/ Accessed October 23, 2026.20% is the current US standard for good table service; 15% reads as adequate, 18% as good, 25% as exceptional. The old 15% default has crept upward — most tip screens and guides now treat 20% as the baseline for sit-down restaurants.
Move the decimal one place left to get 10%, then double it: on a $65 bill, 10% is $6.50, doubled is $13.00. For 15%, take 10% and add half ($6.50 + $3.25 = $9.75). For 18%, take 10% and add 8% of the bill — or just use the chart above.
Etiquette says the pre-tax subtotal — the server did not provide the service of collecting tax. In practice, tipping on the total is common and socially neutral: the difference is about $1.60 on a $100 meal with 8% tax. Either is fine.
Two ways. Equal split: add the tip to the full bill, then divide by the number of diners — a $100 bill at 20% is $120, split 4 ways is $30 each. Proportional split: each person pays tip on what they actually ordered — fairer when one diner ordered the lobster. The calculator above does the equal split.
No — check the bill first. Parties of 6+ are often charged an automatic 18–20% gratuity; tipping again on top double-tips. You can add extra for exceptional service, but treat the printed gratuity as the tip line, not a service charge.
15–20% of the order total with a $3–5 minimum for small orders; 20–25% for long distances, bad weather, or stairs. The app's "service fee" is not the driver's tip — the tip line is. Run the order total through the lookup above.
It is optional. The flip-screen defaults have crept from 15/18/20 to 20/25/30, but tipping on a grab-and-go item is a courtesy, not an obligation — 10–15% is plenty, and pressing custom (or no tip) is fine. Zeroing a table-service tip is a different matter: it punishes a worker earning the tipped minimum wage, often for the kitchen's mistake.
