Sod coverage chart
Put your lawn area and roll coverage in: 1,000 square feet at 10% waste needs 110.00 rolls, order 110 rolls on 3 pallets.

On the defaults — a 1,000-square-foot lawn, rolls covering 10 square feet each, and 10% waste — you need 110.00 rolls of sod exact, so order 110 rolls on 3 pallets. This is the SOD version — rolls of grass by lawn size — the topsoil-coverage-chart page is the TOPSOIL version — cubic yards and tons by area and depth; the mulch-coverage-chart page is the MULCH version — cubic yards and bags by area and depth; and the gravel-coverage-chart page is the GRAVEL version — cubic yards, tons and cost by area.
Put your lawn area and roll coverage in: 1,000 square feet at 10% waste needs 110.00 rolls, order 110 rolls on 3 pallets.
It means a 1,000-square-foot lawn needs one hundred and ten rolls of sod once 10% waste is added: 1,000 × 1.10 ÷ 10 is 110.00, and since suppliers sell whole rolls, the order is 110 rolls — which fills 3 pallets at 500 square feet each, because 1,100 square feet with waste needs 2.20 pallets and a partial pallet cannot be bought. The 1.10 is the whole story in miniature — cuts around curves, edges and beds, plus a few damaged rolls, all eat material, so the bare lawn area alone understates the order: without waste the same lawn needs exactly 100.00 rolls, and the waste ten rolls are what keep the last strip of lawn covered. The part people get wrong is ordering the exact figure when it is not whole: 27.50 rolls cannot be bought, and ordering 27 leaves half a roll of lawn bare.
Is the area really 1,000 square feet? Lawns are rarely rectangles, so the measured area is where most orders go wrong: the 500-square-foot branch needs 55.00 rolls exact, order 55, while the 2,000-square-foot branch needs 220.00, order 220, for the same 10-square-foot rolls. Break curves and angles into rectangles and triangles, measure each, and add them — and subtract beds, paths and the driveway, which are the parts people most often forget to exclude.
Is the roll coverage really 10 square feet? Roll sizes vary by supplier, and the roll count follows the coverage exactly: the 5-square-foot-coverage branch needs 220.00 rolls exact, order 220, while the 20-square-foot-coverage branch needs 55.00, order 55, for the same 1,000-square-foot lawn. Use the coverage from your supplier's roll size — a 2-by-5-foot roll covers 10 square feet, but a 16-inch by 6-foot roll covers only 8 — or measure one laid roll yourself.
Have you ordered the rounded-up figure? This chart gives the exact rolls, the order rolls and the pallets separately for a reason: suppliers sell whole rolls on whole pallets, and a partial roll or partial pallet is still a roll or pallet you must buy. The headline exact figure is 110.00 rolls but the order is 110 rolls on 3 pallets, and the 250-square-foot branch is 27.50 rolls exact but 28 rolls to order on 1 pallet — ordering the exact figure leaves the last strip of the lawn bare.
On the defaults: 1,000 square feet, rolls covering 10 square feet, 10% waste, 500 square feet a pallet.
And the other way: the lawn area needing exactly 110.00 rolls at 10 square feet a roll is 1,000 square feet, the roll coverage needing exactly 110.00 rolls over 1,000 square feet is 10 square feet, and the lawn area needing exactly 220.00 rolls at 10 square feet a roll is 2,000 square feet.
| Lawn area | Roll coverage | Exact rolls | Order rolls | Pallets |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 250 sq ft | 5 sq ft | 55.00 rolls | 55 rolls | 1 pallets |
| 250 sq ft | 10 sq ft | 27.50 rolls | 28 rolls | 1 pallets |
| 250 sq ft | 15 sq ft | 18.33 rolls | 19 rolls | 1 pallets |
| 250 sq ft | 20 sq ft | 13.75 rolls | 14 rolls | 1 pallets |
| 500 sq ft | 5 sq ft | 110.00 rolls | 110 rolls | 2 pallets |
| 500 sq ft | 10 sq ft | 55.00 rolls | 55 rolls | 2 pallets |
| 500 sq ft | 15 sq ft | 36.67 rolls | 37 rolls | 2 pallets |
| 500 sq ft | 20 sq ft | 27.50 rolls | 28 rolls | 2 pallets |
| 1,000 sq ft | 5 sq ft | 220.00 rolls | 220 rolls | 3 pallets |
| 1,000 sq ft | 10 sq ft | 110.00 rolls | 110 rolls | 3 pallets |
| 1,000 sq ft | 15 sq ft | 73.33 rolls | 74 rolls | 3 pallets |
| 1,000 sq ft | 20 sq ft | 55.00 rolls | 55 rolls | 3 pallets |
| 2,000 sq ft | 5 sq ft | 440.00 rolls | 440 rolls | 5 pallets |
| 2,000 sq ft | 10 sq ft | 220.00 rolls | 220 rolls | 5 pallets |
| 2,000 sq ft | 15 sq ft | 146.67 rolls | 147 rolls | 5 pallets |
| 2,000 sq ft | 20 sq ft | 110.00 rolls | 110 rolls | 5 pallets |
Exact rolls are lawn area × 1.10 ÷ roll coverage; order rounds up to whole rolls, and pallets are area with waste ÷ 500 sq ft rounded up, so a 110.00-roll figure orders 110 rolls on 3 pallets.
The defaults are a 1,000-square-foot lawn and 10-square-foot rolls, so the headline is a medium front lawn at the common 2-by-5-foot roll size. The model is one multiplication, one division and two round-ups: area times 1.10 for waste, divided by roll coverage for rolls, and area with waste divided by 500 for pallets — with a tiny epsilon subtracted before each ceiling so a value landing exactly on a whole roll or pallet, like 1,000 square feet at 11-square-foot coverage, orders that roll and not one more. The area reverses are checked at 50 square feet either side; the coverage reverse is checked at 1 square foot either side. The model does not include delivery minimums, soil preparation, edging cuts beyond the 10% waste, or rolls damaged in transit — order one extra roll for a small lawn as a safety margin, and confirm the pallet size with your supplier, since some pallets hold 400 or 500 square feet.

Figures are the model’s own arithmetic on the numbers you type, computed from unrounded values and displayed rounded HALF_UP to 2dp, with order rolls and pallets rounded up to whole units. The main limitation is the lawn itself, not the arithmetic: curves, beds, paths and slopes all move the real order, and the 10% waste figure is a standard allowance, not a measurement of your lawn. This page is a calculation tool, not a landscaping quote.
1,000 sq ft at 10% waste needs 110.00 sod rolls at 10 sq ft a roll — order 110 rolls, 3 pallets. Source: Bright Side Kit, https://brightoolbox.com/sod-coverage-chart/, accessed 28 October 2026.
Divide the lawn area with waste by the roll coverage, then round up: 1,000 square feet times 1.10 divided by 10 square feet is 110.00 rolls exact, so order 110 rolls on 3 pallets.
Cuts around curves, edges and beds, plus a few damaged rolls, all consume material. Without waste the same lawn needs exactly 100.00 rolls; the extra ten rolls are what keep the last strip covered.
About 50 rolls at 10 square feet each, or 500 square feet a pallet — but pallet sizes vary by supplier, so confirm yours: some pallets hold 400 or 500 square feet, which changes the pallet count but not the roll count.
Just the lawn. Subtract the house footprint, driveway, paths and beds from the lot area, or the roll count will come out high and you will pay for grass you cannot lay.
Suppliers sell whole rolls on whole pallets, and a partial roll cannot cover a partial lawn. Rounding 27.50 down to 27 would leave half a roll of lawn bare; rounding up to 28 covers it with a little spare.
Break the lawn into rectangles and triangles, measure each, and add them — and keep the 10% waste for the extra cutting curves demand. For a very curvy lawn, allow 15% waste instead of 10% by multiplying the area by 1.15 before dividing.
