How sod cost is worked out
Sod is priced by the square foot, but a lawn is never a perfect rectangle, so the job is three steps: work out the billable area, price the sod, and add the delivery. The billable area is the lawn area plus extra for cuts and waste: 5,000 sq ft × 1.10 = 5,500.00 sq ft. The sod cost is the billable area times the price per square foot, worked out from the unrounded billable area: 5,500.00 × $1.00 = $5,500.00. The total adds the delivery: $5,500.00 + $75.00 = $5,575.00.
At the defaults — 5,000 sq ft, $1.00/sq ft, $75.00 delivery, 10% extra — the sod cost is $5,500.00 and the total is $5,575.00 — which is $5,575.00 ÷ 5,000 = $1.12/sq ft all-in. The sod comes on 11 pallets of 500 sq ft, and it unrolls as 550 rolls of 10 sq ft.
| Job | Billable | Sod | Total | Per sq ft | Pallets |
| 5,000 sq ft, $1.00 (default) | 5,500.00 sq ft | $5,500.00 | $5,575.00 | $1.12 | 11 |
| 2,500 sq ft, $1.00 | 2,750.00 sq ft | $2,750.00 | $2,825.00 | $1.13 | 6 |
| 5,000 sq ft, $0.60 | 5,500.00 sq ft | $3,300.00 | $3,375.00 | $0.68 | 11 |
| 5,000 sq ft, 5% extra | 5,250.00 sq ft | $5,250.00 | $5,325.00 | $1.07 | 11 |
| 5,000 sq ft, no delivery | 5,500.00 sq ft | $5,500.00 | $5,500.00 | $1.10 | 11 |
The worked example, line by line
Setup: 5,000 sq ft, $1.00/sq ft, $75.00 delivery, 10% extra.
Line 1 — the billable area. 5,000 × 1.10 = 5,500.00 sq ft to order.
Line 2 — the sod cost. 5,500.00 × $1.00 = $5,500.00, worked out from the unrounded billable area.
Line 3 — the total. $5,500.00 + $75.00 delivery = $5,575.00, or $1.12/sq ft all-in.
Line 4 — the pallets. 5,500.00 ÷ 500 = 11.00, so 11 pallets, and the last pallet is full.
Line 5 — the rolls. 5,500.00 ÷ 10 = 550 rolls of 10 sq ft.
Line 6 — the budget. A $3,000 budget minus $75 delivery is $2,925, and $2,925 ÷ $1.00 ÷ 1.10 = 2,659.09 sq ft.
Every branch, checked
2,500 sq ft: the billable area is 2,500 × 1.10 = 2,750.00 sq ft, so the sod costs $2,750.00 and the total is $2,825.00, or $1.13/sq ft all-in. It comes on 6 pallets, because 2,750 ÷ 500 is 5.5 and a half pallet is still a pallet. Halving the lawn halves the sod, but the delivery stays $75, so the cost per square foot rises from $1.12 to $1.13.
$0.60/sq ft: the billable area is the same, but the sod costs 5,500.00 × $0.60 = $3,300.00, so the total is $3,375.00, or $0.68/sq ft all-in. A cheaper sod is still the same sod to lay: the price is the variety and the farm, not the laying.
5% extra: the billable area falls to 5,000 × 1.05 = 5,250.00 sq ft, so the sod costs $5,250.00 and the total is $5,325.00, or $1.07/sq ft all-in. Five percent is right for a square lawn with straight edges; a curved lawn needs 10% or 15%, or the last corner comes up short.
No delivery: with no delivery charge, the total is the sod cost alone: $5,500.00, or $1.10/sq ft all-in. Picking it up yourself saves $75, but the sod weighs about 15 lb a roll, so 550 rolls is about 8,250 lb — bring a trailer, not a car boot.
Reverse — the $3,000 budget: the delivery takes $75 of the budget, leaving $2,925, and $2,925 ÷ $1.00 = 2,925.00 sq ft of sod, which is 2,925.00 ÷ 1.10 = 2,659.09 sq ft of lawn. A $6,000 budget buys 5,386.36 sq ft, which is 2,727.27 sq ft more than the default lawn.
What the defaults assume
The model assumes a flat lawn on level ground: a slope, a lawn with a deep edge, or a lawn that follows a curve changes the area, because the sod is cut to fit and the offcuts are waste. It assumes a pallet holds 500 sq ft and a roll holds 10 sq ft, which is right for the standard sod at a sod farm but not for big rolls, which are 200 sq ft each. It assumes the delivery is one load: a farm that charges per load, not per pallet, will charge the same $75 for 6 pallets and for 11 pallets. It assumes the sod is laid the day it arrives: sod left on the pallet dries out and dies, and the extra you ordered does not cover sod that died on the pallet. Rounding convention: money is rounded to cents, areas to 2 decimals, and all figures are computed from unrounded values, rounded only for display.

Who uses this
- The homeowner sodding a front lawn: they learn a 5,000 sq ft lawn costs $5,575.00 — $5,500.00 of sod and $75.00 of delivery — so they know the exact number before they call the sod farm, and they know it is 11 pallets, not a guess.
- The landlord sodding a rental lawn: they learn a 2,500 sq ft lawn costs $2,825.00 — and they learn the delivery is $75 of $2,825, so ordering more sod in one load is cheaper than two loads.
- The couple choosing between sod and seed: sod costs $5,575.00 for this lawn, and seed is a fraction of that but takes a season to grow — so they know the price of an instant lawn before they decide.
- The renovator on a $3,000 budget: they learn $3,000 covers 2,659.09 sq ft — so they know the 5,000 sq ft lawn is out of reach, and the 2,500 sq ft front lawn fits with room to spare.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is exact for the numbers you enter: the billable area is the area plus the extra, the sod cost is the billable area times the price, and the total is the sod plus the delivery. What the model cannot do is measure your lawn for you: measure along the lawn, and for a lawn that follows a curve or a slope, measure the lawn, not the straight-line distance. It leaves out the soil preparation, the topsoil, the laying, the watering, and tax — ask the sod farm whether the quote includes those. It assumes a pallet holds 500 sq ft and a roll holds 10 sq ft, which is right for the standard sod but not for big rolls. It assumes the sod is laid the day it arrives. For the seed that goes with it, see sod vs grass seed; for the mulch that goes with it, see mulch cost calculator.
