Snowblower Fuel Cost: 1.5 Hours, 20 Clearings, $51 Total

Put your hours a clearing, clearings, fuel use and fuel price in: 1.5 hours a clearing for 20 clearings at 0.5 gallons an hour and $3.40 a gallon costs $51.00 in all — 15 gallons a winter. This is the snowblower fuel cost tool: hours times gallons an hour is the fuel for a clearing, clearings times that fuel is the winter fuel, and winter fuel times price is the bill — a fuel price tells you nothing until the hours, the clearings and the hourly use are counted.

Put your hours a clearing, clearings, fuel use and fuel price in: 1.5 hours a clearing for 20 clearings at 0.5 gallons an hour and $3.40 a gallon costs $51.00 in all — 15 gallons a winter.

Hours the snowblower runs for one clearing — 1.5 on the defaults. The hours set the fuel for a clearing directly: a longer clearing burns more gallons at the same hourly use.

Clearings in the whole winter — 20 on the defaults. The clearings stretch the winter fuel: more storms mean more clearings, while the fuel for one clearing never changes.

Fuel the snowblower burns in an hour — 0.5 gallons on the defaults. The hourly use sets every gallon figure: a thirstier machine lifts the fuel for a clearing and for the winter together.

Fuel price a gallon — $3.40 on the defaults. The price sets the money figures only: dearer fuel lifts the bill without touching a single gallon.

Snowblower fuel cost (1.5 hours a clearing, 20 clearings, 0.5 gallons an hour, $3.4 a gallon)Snowblower fuel cost $51.00 in all (1.5 hours a clearing, 20 clearings, 0.5 gallons an hour, $3.40 a gallon, 0.75 gallons a clearing, 15 gallons a winter, $2.55 a clearing, $1.70 an hour).Fuel a clearing 1.5 hours × 0.5 gallons an hour = 0.75 gallons; fuel a winter 0.75 gallons × 20 clearings = 15 gallons; in all 15 gallons × $3.40 = $51.00; a clearing $51.00 ÷ 20 clearings = $2.55; an hour 0.5 gallons an hour × $3.40 = $1.70. Keep the hours honest, since the clearing actually driven settles the bill, not the plan.

What does $51.00 mean?

It means 1.5 hours a clearing for 20 clearings at 0.5 gallons an hour and $3.40 a gallon burns 15 gallons and costs fifty-one dollars in all, which is $2.55 a clearing and $1.70 an hour. The hours set the fuel for one clearing, the clearings set how many times that fuel is burned, the hourly use sets how thirsty the machine is, and the price turns gallons into dollars: one more clearing adds $2.55 at the defaults, while dearer fuel lifts the bill without touching a single gallon. The only judgement is the hourly use itself — a single-stage machine, a two-stage machine and a wide clearing path are not the same thirst, and the use actually burned for the driveway you clear is the only honest source for it.

Three things to check before you trust the number

First, check the hours honestly: 1.5 hours must be a timed clearing, not a driveway length guessed into time — a long drive cleared slowly is not the same as a short drive cleared fast, and the hours multiply straight into the gallons. Second, check the hourly use against the machine: 0.5 gallons an hour must be the use actually burned for that machine on that snow, not the brochure figure for light powder — wet, heavy snow drinks more, and a two-stage machine drinks more than a single-stage one. Third, check the clearings against the winter: 20 must be storms actually cleared, not storms forecast — a storm you never cleared burns no fuel, and a storm cleared twice counts twice.

Worked example

1.5 hours a clearing, 20 clearings, 0.5 gallons an hour, $3.40 a gallon. Fuel a clearing: 1.5 × 0.5 = 0.75 gallons. Fuel a winter: 0.75 × 20 = 15 gallons. Total: 15 × $3.40 = $51.00. Per clearing: $51.00 ÷ 20 = $2.55. Per hour: 0.5 × $3.40 = $1.70. In practice that means a winter of clearing costs about two dollars and fifty-five cents a storm all-in, and the 15-gallon figure is the one to set against the fuel can, since the price moves with the pump while the gallons stay put.

Every branch, checked

At 1 hour a clearing, same clearings, fuel use and fuel price, Snowblower fuel cost $34.00 in all (1 hours a clearing, 20 clearings, 0.5 gallons an hour, $3.40 a gallon, 0.5 gallons a clearing, 10 gallons a winter, $1.70 a clearing, $1.70 an hour). At 30 clearings, same hours, fuel use and fuel price, Snowblower fuel cost $76.50 in all (1.5 hours a clearing, 30 clearings, 0.5 gallons an hour, $3.40 a gallon, 0.75 gallons a clearing, 22.5 gallons a winter, $2.55 a clearing, $1.70 an hour). At 0.75 gallons an hour, same hours, clearings and fuel price, Snowblower fuel cost $76.50 in all (1.5 hours a clearing, 20 clearings, 0.75 gallons an hour, $3.40 a gallon, 1.13 gallons a clearing, 22.5 gallons a winter, $3.84 a clearing, $2.55 an hour). At $4.00 a gallon, same hours, clearings and fuel use, Snowblower fuel cost $60.00 in all (1.5 hours a clearing, 20 clearings, 0.5 gallons an hour, $4.00 a gallon, 0.75 gallons a clearing, 15 gallons a winter, $3.00 a clearing, $2.00 an hour).

The reverses, worked backwards

Hours behind 1.5 hours — at the lower neighbor the figures are Snowblower fuel cost $34.00 in all (1 hours a clearing, 20 clearings, 0.5 gallons an hour, $3.40 a gallon, 0.5 gallons a clearing, 10 gallons a winter, $1.70 a clearing, $1.70 an hour). at the upper neighbor the figures are Snowblower fuel cost $68.00 in all (2 hours a clearing, 20 clearings, 0.5 gallons an hour, $3.40 a gallon, 1 gallons a clearing, 20 gallons a winter, $3.40 a clearing, $1.70 an hour).. Clearings behind 20 clearings — at the lower neighbor the figures are Snowblower fuel cost $25.50 in all (1.5 hours a clearing, 10 clearings, 0.5 gallons an hour, $3.40 a gallon, 0.75 gallons a clearing, 7.5 gallons a winter, $2.55 a clearing, $1.70 an hour). at the upper neighbor the figures are Snowblower fuel cost $76.50 in all (1.5 hours a clearing, 30 clearings, 0.5 gallons an hour, $3.40 a gallon, 0.75 gallons a clearing, 22.5 gallons a winter, $2.55 a clearing, $1.70 an hour)..

What the defaults assume

The defaults assume 1.5 hours a clearing, 20 clearings, 0.5 gallons an hour and $3.40 a gallon, for one machine clearing one driveway all winter. They do not assume oil, maintenance, a second machine, or a neighbour's driveway — so treat $51.00 as the planning cost for 1.5 hours a clearing for 20 clearings at 0.5 gallons an hour and $3.40 a gallon, and check it against the fuel actually burned before budgeting it as exact.

Who uses this

Accuracy & limitations

The arithmetic is exact for the inputs entered; the judgement is the hours actually driven, the true hourly use for that machine on that snow, the clearings actually cleared, and the price actually paid at the pump. Real machines vary with snow depth, snow weight and clearing width — so treat $51.00 as the planning cost for 1.5 hours a clearing for 20 clearings at 0.5 gallons an hour and $3.40 a gallon, and check it against the fuel actually burned before budgeting it as exact.

Frequently asked questions

How much fuel does a snowblower use per clearing?

0.75 gallons on the defaults: 1.5 hours a clearing at 0.5 gallons an hour.

How many gallons does a snowblower burn in a winter?

15 gallons on the defaults: 0.75 gallons a clearing times 20 clearings.

What does snowblower fuel cost per hour?

$1.70 an hour on the defaults: 0.5 gallons an hour at $3.40 a gallon.

Why does the per-clearing cost stay the same with more clearings?

Because both the gallons and the bill grow together: 30 clearings cost $76.50 in all, still $2.55 a clearing.

How do I cut my snowblower fuel cost?

Clear faster or burn less per hour: 1 hour a clearing costs $34.00 for the winter, and a machine using 0.75 gallons an hour costs $76.50.

Does deeper snow change the maths?

Only through the inputs: deeper snow raises the hours, the hourly use, or both — put the real figures in and the maths follows.
