★ COMPARISONS · SAVE VS INVEST · $500 A MONTH FOR 10 YEARS

Save vs Invest: $500 a Month for 10 Years Compared

On the defaults — $500 a month for 10 years, saving at 4% against investing at 7% — saving grows to $73,624.90 and investing to $86,542.40, so investing wins by $12,917.50. Put in your monthly amount, your years and the two rates, and the calculator grows both legs side by side — the balances, the contributions, the growth and the gap — so you can see exactly what the higher rate is worth. This one compares saving and investing in one place: the saving-vs-investing page is the QUESTION — which grows your money faster, saving or investing — not the side-by-side balance at your amount and years; the emergency-fund-vs-invest page is the ORDER — build the fund first or invest now — not the ten-year gap; the pay-off-debt-vs-invest page is the DEBT — pay off a balance or invest the extra — not saving against investing; and the compound-interest-calculator page is the GROWTH — any money compounding at any rate — not two legs compared. No save-vs-invest calculator exists on this site — this one is the first.

Save vs invest calculator

Saving and investing are the same monthly amount at two different rates: the same $500 a month, the same 10 years, one leg at 4% and one at 7%. On the defaults saving grows to $73,624.90 and investing to $86,542.40, so investing wins by $12,917.50 — on $60,000.00 of contributions, $13,624.90 of growth on the saving leg and $26,542.40 on the investing leg. What does $12,917.50 mean?

It means that $500 a month for 10 years is worth $12,917.50 more invested at 7% than saved at 4%: saving grows to $73,624.90 and investing to $86,542.40, on the same $60,000.00 of contributions. The gap is the price of the rate difference — 3 points a year, compounding for a decade — and it is not the contributions: both legs put in the same $60,000.00, and the gap is all growth, $13,624.90 on the saving leg against $26,542.40 on the investing leg. The investing leg is not guaranteed to earn 7% — the saving leg is, near enough — so the gap is what the risk is worth if the return holds.

Three things to check before you trust the number

The rate is the whole story, and it is not guaranteed. At 5% the investing leg would be $77,641.14 and the gap $4,016.24; at 7% it is $86,542.40 and the gap is $12,917.50; at 10% it would be far wider still. A 7% return is the long-run average of a broad stock market, not a promise, and a decade that earns 5% instead of 7% closes most of the gap. Saving at 4% is a rate you can hold; investing at 7% is a rate you hope for.

Time widens the gap faster than money does. Doubling the monthly amount doubles the gap — $250 a month is a $6,458.75 gap, $1,000 a month is $25,835.00 — but doubling the years multiplies it: 5 years is a $2,646.96 gap, 10 years is $12,917.50, 20 years is $77,076.02. The gap grows with the years because the extra growth compounds on itself, which is why starting early beats saving more later.

The gap is before tax, fees and inflation. Investment growth is taxed when you sell, savings interest is taxed as you earn it, fees take a slice every year, and inflation takes a slice of both legs — and the comparison here ignores all of it. A 1% fee on the investing leg would take roughly a third of the gap over 10 years. The gap is the shape of the choice, not the final answer.

Worked example

On the defaults: $500 a month for 10 years, saving at 4%, investing at 7%.

  1. Months: 10 years × 12 = 120 months.
  2. Contributions: $500 × 120 = $60,000.00.
  3. Monthly saving rate: 4% ÷ 12 = 0.3333% a month.
  4. Monthly investing rate: 7% ÷ 12 = 0.5833% a month.
  5. Saving grows to: $500 × ((1.003333)^120 − 1) ÷ 0.003333 = $73,624.90 (unrounded 73624.902363).
  6. Investing grows to: $500 × ((1.005833)^120 − 1) ÷ 0.005833 = $86,542.40 (unrounded 86542.403717).
  7. Growth (saving): $73,624.90 − $60,000.00 = $13,624.90.
  8. Growth (investing): $86,542.40 − $60,000.00 = $26,542.40.
  9. Gap: $86,542.40 − $73,624.90 = $12,917.50 (unrounded 12917.501354).
  10. Smallest monthly amount for the investing leg to reach $100,000: $600 — at $600 the investing leg is $103,850.88, and at $575 it is $99,523.76.

What the defaults assume

The defaults are $500 a month for 10 years, saving at 4% against investing at 7% — a steady saver with a decade to run, the classic comparison — and investing wins by $12,917.50. They are a starting point, not a recommendation: your amount may be $250 or $1,000, your horizon may be 5 years or 30, and the right answer for you is the one your numbers describe. Change the monthly amount, the years and the two rates to your own and the calculator recomputes instantly. Take the same money, grow it at two rates, and read the gap.

These notes repeat in every explainer section because this page is built to be read start to finish: the defaults are one comparison, not a standard; the rate is the whole story, and it is not guaranteed; time widens the gap faster than money does; and the gap is before tax, fees and inflation.

Who uses this

Accuracy & limitations

The calculator grows each leg month by month at the rate you give, contributions at month-end, and every balance on this page is checked against an independent model — the closed-form annuity and the month-by-month compounding agree to the cent. What it cannot do is predict a return: 7% is the long-run average of a broad stock market, not a promise, and a real decade can earn far more or far less, while the 4% saving rate can also change. It ignores tax, fees and inflation, and it ignores risk entirely — the investing leg can fall, the saving leg cannot, and the gap is the reward for taking that risk. It is not financial advice: the right choice depends on your horizon, your tax position and how much loss you can stomach, not only on the gap. And the page prints the unrounded figures so the rounding does not mislead you — the saving leg is $73,624.90, unrounded 73624.902363, and the investing leg is $86,542.40, unrounded 86542.403717.

Frequently asked questions

Should I save or invest my money?

It depends on the horizon and the rates. $500 a month for 10 years at 4% saved grows to $73,624.90 and at 7% invested to $86,542.40 — investing wins by $12,917.50. But at 5 years the gap is only $2,646.96, and the investing return is not guaranteed. Money you need soon is better saved; money you can leave for a decade is usually better invested.

How much does $500 a month grow to in 10 years?

At 4% it grows to $73,624.90, and at 7% it grows to $86,542.40 — on $60,000.00 of contributions, so $13,624.90 of growth saved and $26,542.40 invested. Put your own amount, years and rates into the calculator above and it grows both legs side by side.

What is the difference between saving and investing?

Saving puts the money in an account that pays interest — the rate is low and near-certain. Investing puts it in assets like shares — the return is higher on average and not guaranteed, and the value can fall. The calculator compares the two at the rates you give: 4% saved against 7% invested is a $12,917.50 gap over 10 years.

How much do I need to save a month to reach $100,000?

Investing $500 a month at 7% for 10 years reaches $86,542.40 — the smallest monthly amount to reach $100,000 is $600, which grows to $103,850.88, while $575 reaches $99,523.76. The calculator's reverses list the amount for each common target.

Is investing better than saving for 10 years?

At 7% against 4%, yes by $12,917.50 — but only if the 7% holds. A decade that earns 5% instead of 7% closes most of the gap, and the saving leg never falls. The answer depends on the return you actually get, not the one you assume.

How does the gap change over time?

It grows faster than the years: at 5 years the gap is $2,646.96, at 10 years $12,917.50, at 20 years $77,076.02 and at 30 years $262,960.80. The gap compounds on itself, which is why starting early beats saving more later.

What if the saving rate is higher than the investing return?

Then saving wins: at 8% saved against 7% invested, saving grows to $91,473.02 and investing to $86,542.40, so saving wins by $4,930.61. The higher rate wins whichever leg holds it — the calculator does not favour investing, it follows the rates.

Does the calculator include tax and fees?

No — the gap is before tax, fees and inflation. Investment growth is taxed when you sell, savings interest is taxed as you earn it, and a 1% fee on the investing leg would take roughly a third of the gap over 10 years. The gap is the shape of the choice, not the final answer.
