Is a return on assets of 10.00% healthy?
On the defaults — $2,500,000.00 of total assets and $250,000.00 of net income — the return on assets is 10.00%, the total assets needed for a 15.00% return is $1,666,666.67, and the net income needed for a 15.00% return is $375,000.00. The return on assets — net income divided by total assets — is the asset test: how much profit each dollar of assets produces. A return above 15% is strong for most businesses; 5–10% is typical; below 5% is weak and means the assets are not pulling their weight. A negative return means the business lost money — with net income of −$250,000.00 the return is −10.00%, a loss on assets. The same return can mean different things by industry — a software company needs few assets, a manufacturer needs many — so compare within an industry, not across them.
Four things about the model are worth stating plainly. First, the return on assets is the net income divided by the total assets — $250,000.00 ÷ $2,500,000.00 = 10.00%. Second, the total assets needed at the target is the net income divided by the target — $250,000.00 ÷ 0.15 = $1,666,666.67. Third, the net income needed at the target is the total assets times the target — $2,500,000.00 × 0.15 = $375,000.00. And fourth, each dollar of assets earns 10 cents — the return is the asset test, not the bottom line; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: $2,500,000.00 of total assets, $250,000.00 of net income, target ROA 15.00%.
Line 1 — the return on assets. The return on assets is $250,000.00 ÷ $2,500,000.00 × 100 = 10.00%.
Line 2 — the total assets needed. The total assets needed for a 15.00% return is $250,000.00 ÷ 0.15 = $1,666,666.67.
Line 3 — the net income needed. The net income needed for a 15.00% return is $2,500,000.00 × 0.15 = $375,000.00.
Line 4 — the check. 10.00% × $2,500,000.00 = $250,000.00, the net income; and $250,000.00 ÷ 10.00% = $2,500,000.00, the total assets.

A warning about the neighbours: every neighbour above shows as the target when rounded to two decimals, but its unrounded return is short of the target. A lender underwriting on the unrounded return would still say no. The page prints the unrounded neighbour value in full so the rounding does not mislead you.

Who uses this
- The small-business owner checking the year: they learn $250,000.00 of net income on $2,500,000.00 of total assets gives a return of 10.00% — and they check the $1,666,666 reverse to see the largest total assets that still reaches 15.00%.
- The lender sizing a loan: they learn a return above 15% is strong and 5–10% is typical — and they check the $375,000 reverse to see the smallest net income that reaches 15.00%.
- The owner whose return slipped to 5.00%: they learn the business is at the bottom of the typical band — and they check the $312,500 reverse to see the smallest net income that reaches 12.50%.
- The founder with a 40.00% return: they learn the business may be asset-light or running its assets hard — and they check the $1,000,000 reverse to see the largest total assets that stays at or above 25.00%.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is first-principles: the return on assets is the net income divided by the total assets, rounded to two decimals half-up; the total assets needed at the target is the net income divided by the target; the net income needed at the target is the total assets times the target. The reverses are judged on the UNROUNDED return: a neighbour one dollar short shows as the target when rounded to two decimals, but its unrounded return is below the target, so it does not meet the bar — the page prints the unrounded neighbour value in full. What the model cannot do is judge the business: net income is profit after all costs and total assets are everything the business owns — cash, equipment, property, inventory — and the same return means different things by industry, so compare within an industry, not across them; the 15% line is the usual line, not a rule, and some industries run happily below it; and the return says nothing about the debt behind the assets, the cash, or whether the business is profitable. Use it to see how much profit each dollar of assets produces — then read the rest of the statements.

Frequently asked questions
What is return on assets?
Net income divided by total assets. On $250,000.00 of net income and $2,500,000.00 of total assets the return on assets is 10.00% — each dollar of assets earns 10 cents.
How do I calculate return on assets?
Divide, then multiply by 100. Take the net income and divide it by the total assets, times 100. On $250,000.00 ÷ $2,500,000.00 that is 10.00%.
What is a good return on assets?
Above 15% is strong. A return above 15% is strong for most businesses; 5–10% is typical; below 5% is weak and means the assets are not pulling their weight. Below 0% the business lost money.
How many assets do I need for a 15.00% return?
$1,666,666.67 on $250,000 of net income. The total assets needed is the net income divided by the target: $250,000.00 ÷ 0.15 = $1,666,666.67. At $1,666,667 the total assets are $1 over the $1,666,666 allowed.
How much net income do I need for a 15.00% return?
$375,000.00 on $2,500,000 of total assets. The net income needed is the total assets times the target: $2,500,000.00 × 0.15 = $375,000.00. At $374,999 the net income is $1 short of the $375,000 needed.
How is return on assets different from return on equity?
Return on equity divides by shareholders’ equity, not assets. Debt inflates return on equity, because the equity is smaller than the assets. Return on assets divides by everything the business owns, so it is not flattered by debt. On $250,000.00 of net income and $2,500,000.00 of total assets the return on assets is 10.00% — the return on equity would be higher if the business carries debt.
What if the business has no assets?
The return is undefined. With no assets there is nothing to divide by, so the return cannot be computed — the calculator shows “—” with a note, never Infinity or NaN. The net income is still $250,000.00 on $0.00 of total assets.
What does a negative return on assets mean?
The business lost money. With net income of −$100,000.00 and total assets of $2,500,000.00 the return is −4.00% — a loss on assets: the business loses 4 cents on every dollar of assets.
