Working Capital Calculator: Cash Left After Short Bills

On the defaults — $150,000 of current assets and $100,000 of current liabilities — working capital is $50,000.00: the business holds $1.50 of short-term assets for every $1.00 of short-term bills, and it is $25,000.00 short of a $75,000 target. The current assets needed for that target are $175,000.00, and the most current liabilities the target allows are $75,000.00. Put in your own current assets, current liabilities and target working capital, and the calculator works out the dollar cushion, the working capital ratio, and the assets and liabilities the target allows. No working-capital page of any kind exists on the site — the current-ratio page (run 415) and the quick-ratio page (run 416) are RATIOS. This one is the DOLLAR cushion: current assets minus current liabilities, the cash a business actually has left after its short-term bills.

Working capital calculator

Working capital = current assets − current liabilities. Working capital ratio = current assets ÷ current liabilities. Current assets needed at the target = target working capital + current liabilities. Most current liabilities allowed at the target = current assets − target working capital. Working capital is the cash cushion a business has to pay its short-term bills and fund day-to-day operations. Positive working capital means the business can cover its near-term obligations; negative working capital means short-term bills exceed short-term assets — the business is leaning on future sales or borrowing to stay afloat. The working capital ratio says the same thing as a multiple: 1.50 means $1.50 of short-term assets for every $1.00 of short-term bills. Lenders and suppliers watch working capital alongside the current and quick ratios before extending credit; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.

Is $50,000.00 the right working capital for $150,000 and $100,000?

On the defaults — $150,000.00 of current assets and $100,000.00 of current liabilities, with a $75,000.00 target — working capital is $50,000.00, the working capital ratio is 1.50, the current assets needed for the target are $175,000.00, and the most current liabilities the target allows are $75,000.00. Working capital is current assets minus current liabilities, both measured at the same date. It is the cash cushion a business has to pay its short-term bills and fund day-to-day operations. Lenders and suppliers watch working capital alongside the current and quick ratios before extending credit. Too much working capital can mean idle cash sitting on the balance sheet; too little means fragility at the first slow month.

Four things about the model are worth stating plainly. First, the working capital is the current assets minus the current liabilities — $150,000.00 − $100,000.00 = $50,000.00. Second, the working capital ratio is the current assets divided by the current liabilities — $150,000.00 ÷ $100,000.00 = 1.50. Third, the current assets needed at the target are the target plus the current liabilities — $75,000.00 + $100,000.00 = $175,000.00. And fourth, the most current liabilities allowed at the target are the current assets minus the target — $150,000.00 − $75,000.00 = $75,000.00; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.

The worked example, line by line

Setup: $150,000.00 of current assets, $100,000.00 of current liabilities, target working capital $75,000.00.

Line 1 — the working capital. The working capital is $150,000.00 − $100,000.00 = $50,000.00.

Line 2 — the working capital ratio. The ratio is $150,000.00 ÷ $100,000.00 = 1.50 — $1.50 of short-term assets for every $1.00 of short-term bills.

Line 3 — the shortfall. The shortfall to the $75,000.00 target is $75,000.00 − $50,000.00 = $25,000.00.

Line 4 — the current assets needed. The current assets needed at the target are $75,000.00 + $100,000.00 = $175,000.00.

Line 5 — the most current liabilities allowed. The most current liabilities the target allows are $150,000.00 − $75,000.00 = $75,000.00.

Line 6 — the check. $50,000.00 + $100,000.00 = $150,000.00, the current assets; and $175,000.00 − $100,000.00 = $75,000.00, the target.

Every branch, checked

Current liabilities $50,000: Working capital $100,000.00; ratio 3.00; current assets needed at the $75,000.00 target $125,000.00; most current liabilities allowed at the $75,000.00 target $75,000.00; $25,000.00 above the $75,000.00 target — Halving the current liabilities to $50,000.00 doubles the working capital to $100,000.00 and the ratio to 3.00 — the business holds $3.00 of short-term assets for every $1.00 of short-term bills, and may be sitting on idle cash.

Current assets $200,000: Working capital $100,000.00; ratio 2.00; current assets needed at the $75,000.00 target $175,000.00; most current liabilities allowed at the $75,000.00 target $125,000.00; $25,000.00 above the $75,000.00 target — With $200,000.00 of current assets the working capital rises to $100,000.00 and the ratio to 2.00 — comfortably above the $75,000.00 target, $25,000.00 to spare.

Current assets $120,000: Working capital $20,000.00; ratio 1.20; current assets needed at the $75,000.00 target $175,000.00; most current liabilities allowed at the $75,000.00 target $45,000.00; $55,000.00 short of the $75,000.00 target — With $120,000.00 of current assets the working capital falls to $20,000.00 and the ratio to 1.20 — the business is $55,000.00 short of the $75,000.00 target.

Current liabilities $150,000: Working capital $0.00; ratio 1.00; current assets needed at the $75,000.00 target $225,000.00; most current liabilities allowed at the $75,000.00 target $75,000.00; $75,000.00 short of the $75,000.00 target — With current liabilities of $150,000.00 the working capital is exactly $0.00 and the ratio is exactly 1.00 — exactly zero working capital, so the business holds exactly $1.00 of short-term assets for every $1.00 of short-term bills, with nothing left over.

Current assets $175,000: Working capital $75,000.00; ratio 1.75; current assets needed at the $75,000.00 target $175,000.00; most current liabilities allowed at the $75,000.00 target $100,000.00; exactly at the $75,000.00 target — With $175,000.00 of current assets the working capital is exactly $75,000.00 and the ratio is 1.75 — exactly at the target, not a dollar over or under.

Current liabilities $125,000: Working capital $25,000.00; ratio 1.20; current assets needed at the $75,000.00 target $200,000.00; most current liabilities allowed at the $75,000.00 target $75,000.00; $50,000.00 short of the $75,000.00 target — With current liabilities of $125,000.00 the working capital falls to $25,000.00 and the ratio to 1.20 — $50,000.00 short of the $75,000.00 target.

Current assets $90,000: Working capital $−10,000.00; ratio 0.90; current assets needed at the $75,000.00 target $175,000.00; most current liabilities allowed at the $75,000.00 target $15,000.00; $85,000.00 short of the $75,000.00 target — With $90,000.00 of current assets the working capital is negative — $−10,000.00, ratio 0.90 — so the short-term bills exceed the short-term assets and the business is leaning on future sales or borrowing to stay afloat.

Who uses this

  • The small-business owner checking the year-end balance sheet: they learn $150,000.00 of current assets minus $100,000.00 of current liabilities is $50,000.00 of working capital, a ratio of 1.50 — and they check the $175,000 reverse to see the smallest assets that reach the $75,000 target.
  • The supplier deciding whether to extend 30-day terms: they learn a ratio of 1.50 means $1.50 of short-term assets for every $1.00 of short-term bills — and they check the $75,000 reverse to see the largest liabilities that keep the cushion at or above the target.
  • The owner whose working capital turned negative: they learn the short-term bills exceed the short-term assets — and they check the $125,000 reverse to see the assets that would bring the cushion back to $25,000.
  • The founder with $100,000.00 of working capital: they learn the business is $25,000.00 above the $75,000.00 target — and they check the target bars to see the assets and liabilities the $100,000 target allows.

Accuracy & limitations

The math is first-principles: working capital is current assets minus current liabilities, rounded to cents half-up; the working capital ratio is current assets divided by current liabilities, rounded to two decimals half-up; the current assets needed at the target are the target plus the current liabilities; the most current liabilities allowed at the target are the current assets minus the target; the shortfall is the target minus the working capital. The reverses are exact closed forms on whole dollars: the smallest whole-dollar current assets that reach a target are the target plus the current liabilities, and the largest whole-dollar current liabilities that stay at or above a target are the current assets minus the target — the neighbour one dollar away is printed in full so you can see the crossing. What the model cannot do is judge the business: working capital counts the receivables at face value, but bills that never get paid are not cash; the $75,000.00 target is an example, not a rule, and some industries run happily with less; and the cushion says nothing about the long-term debt, the cash flow, or whether the business is profitable. Too much working capital can mean idle cash sitting on the balance sheet; too little means fragility at the first slow month. Use it to see the cash left after the short-term bills — then read the rest of the balance sheet.

Frequently asked questions

What is working capital?

Current assets minus current liabilities. On $150,000.00 of current assets and $100,000.00 of current liabilities working capital is $50,000.00 — the cash cushion a business has to pay its short-term bills and fund day-to-day operations.

How do I calculate working capital?

Subtract the current liabilities from the current assets. On $150,000.00 minus $100,000.00 that is $50,000.00. Both figures are measured at the same date, from the same balance sheet.

What is a good working capital?

Positive, and enough to cover the bills. A working capital of $50,000.00 with a ratio of 1.50 means $1.50 of short-term assets for every $1.00 of short-term bills. Negative working capital means the short-term bills exceed the short-term assets.

How much in current assets do I need for $75,000 of working capital?

$175,000 on $100,000 of current liabilities. The assets needed are the target plus the liabilities: $75,000.00 + $100,000.00 = $175,000.00. At $174,999 the working capital is $74,999.00 — $1 short.

How much in current liabilities can I carry at $75,000?

$75,000.00. The most liabilities the target allows are the current assets minus the target: $150,000.00 − $75,000.00 = $75,000.00. At $75,001 the working capital is $74,999.00.

How is working capital different from the current ratio?

Working capital is dollars; the current ratio is a multiple. On the same numbers working capital is $50,000.00 and the current ratio is 1.50 — the ratio says $1.50 of assets for every $1.00 of bills, and the working capital says how many dollars are left over. The quick ratio strips out inventory first.

What if the business has no current liabilities?

The ratio is undefined. With no short-term bills there is nothing to divide by, so the ratio cannot be computed — the calculator shows “—” with a note, never Infinity or NaN. The working capital is simply the current assets: $150,000.00.
