Retirement Calculator: How Much Will You Have at 65?

On the defaults — age 35 to 65, $50,000 saved, $500 a month, 7% a year, 3% inflation — the balance at 65 is $1,015,810.37, of which $230,000.00 is contributions and $785,810.37 is growth, and in today's dollars it is $418,500.42. Put in your age, your retirement age, what you have saved, what you put in each month and the return you expect, and the calculator works out the balance, the contributions, the growth and what it is worth in today's dollars. This one works out retirement in one place: the 401k-contribution-calculator page is the CONTRIBUTION — how much to put into a 401(k) each paycheck — not what it grows to by 65; the retirement-savings-calculator page is the TARGET — how much you need to retire on — not what your savings become; the compound-interest-calculator page is the GROWTH — any money compounding at any rate — not a retirement plan with an age and a monthly contribution; and the 401k-catch-up-calculator page is the CATCH-UP — the extra you can put in after 50 — not the whole balance. No retirement calculator exists on this site — this one is the first.

Retirement calculator

Retirement savings grow two ways: what you already have compounds, and what you put in each month compounds after it. On the defaults — age 35 to 65, $50,000 saved, $500 a month, 7% a year, monthly compounding, contributions at month-end — the $50,000 grows to $405,824.87, the $500 a month grows to $609,985.50, the balance at 65 is $1,015,810.37, of which $230,000.00 is contributions and $785,810.37 is growth, and in today's dollars at 3% inflation it is $418,500.42. The return is the whole story: at 5% the balance is $639,516.53, at 10% it is $2,122,113.93, and the difference between them is the difference between a comfortable retirement and a rich one. The calculator shows all of it with notes, never hides it.

What does $1,015,810.37 at 65 mean?

It means that $50,000 saved now plus $500 a month, compounding at 7% a year for 30 years, becomes $1,015,810.37 by age 65 — $230,000.00 of it money you put in, and $785,810.37 of it growth, more than three times what you contributed. In today's dollars, at 3% inflation, it is $418,500.42: the same pile of money, measured in what a dollar buys now. The balance is not a promise — it is what 7% a year for 30 years does to those contributions, and the return is the number the whole answer turns on.

Three things to check before you trust the number

The return is the whole story. At 5% the balance is $639,516.53, at 7% it is $1,015,810.37, at 10% it is $2,122,113.93 — two points of return over 30 years is worth $376,293.84, and five points is worth more than a million. A 7% return is the long-run average of a broad stock market, not a guarantee, and a portfolio that earns 5% instead of 7% retires on $376,293.84 less.

Time beats money. Starting at 25 instead of 35 doubles the balance to $2,127,977.27, and starting at 45 instead of 35 more than halves it to $462,400.27 — the same $500 a month, the same 7%, only the years differ. The first ten years of compounding are worth more than the last ten years of contributions, which is why starting now beats starting bigger later.

Today's dollars are the honest number. $1,015,810.37 at 65 sounds like a millionaire's retirement, but at 3% inflation it buys what $418,500.42 buys today, and at 10% inflation it buys what $58,214.62 buys today. The nominal balance is the headline; the today's-dollars figure is what your retirement actually feels like.

Worked example

On the defaults: age 35 to 65, $50,000 saved, $500 a month, 7% a year, 3% inflation.

  1. Years and months: 65 − 35 = 30 years, 360 months.
  2. Monthly rate: 7% ÷ 12 = 0.5833% a month.
  3. The $50,000 grows to: $50,000 × (1.005833)^360 = $405,824.87 (unrounded 405824.873768).
  4. The $500 a month grows to: $500 × ((1.005833)^360 − 1) ÷ 0.005833 = $609,985.50 (unrounded 609985.497888).
  5. Balance at 65: $405,824.87 + $609,985.50 = $1,015,810.37 (unrounded 1015810.371656).
  6. Contributions: $50,000 + $500 × 360 = $230,000.00.
  7. Growth: $1,015,810.37 − $230,000.00 = $785,810.37 (unrounded 785810.371656).
  8. In today's dollars: $1,015,810.37 ÷ (1.03)^30 = $418,500.42 (unrounded 418500.423301).
  9. Smallest monthly contribution for a balance of at least $1,000,000: $500 — at $500 the balance is $1,015,810.37 (unrounded 1015810.371656), and at $475 it is $985,311.10 (unrounded 985311.096762).
  10. Largest current age for a balance of at least $1,000,000: 35 — at 35 the balance is $1,015,810.37 (unrounded 1015810.371656), and at 36 it is $941,549.40 (unrounded 941549.396974).

What the defaults assume

The defaults are age 35 to 65, $50,000 saved, $500 a month, 7% a year, 3% inflation — a worker ten years into a career with a modest nest egg and a steady habit — and the balance at 65 is $1,015,810.37, $418,500.42 in today's dollars. They are a starting point, not a benchmark: you may be 25 with nothing saved, or 45 with $200,000 already, and the right answer for you is the one your numbers describe. Change the ages, the savings, the contribution, the return and the inflation to your own and the calculator recomputes instantly. Compound the lump sum, compound the contributions, and divide by inflation for today's dollars.

These notes repeat in every explainer section because this page is built to be read start to finish: the defaults are one plan, not a standard; the return is the whole story; time beats money; and today's dollars are the honest number.

Who uses this

Accuracy & limitations

The calculator uses the exact future-value formulas — the lump sum grows by (1+i)^n and the contributions by the annuity formula, compounded monthly, contributions at month-end — and every figure on this page is checked against an independent model. What it cannot do is predict the return: it takes the rate you give it and holds it steady for 30 years, so a real portfolio with good years and bad years will land somewhere else — and a 7% average with 15% swings is not the same retirement as a steady 7%. It also leaves out taxes, fees, employer matches and Social Security, so the balance is the account, not the retirement income — the 401(k) contribution calculator adds the match, and the retirement savings calculator works out the target. And the page prints the unrounded figures so the rounding does not mislead you — the balance is $1,015,810.37, unrounded 1015810.371656, and the growth is $785,810.37, unrounded 785810.371656.

Retirement savings grow two ways: what you already have compounds, and what you put in each month compounds after it. Smallest monthly contribution for the balance to reach at least $1,000,000: $500. Largest current age for the balance to reach at least $1,000,000: 35. Smallest annual return for the balance to reach at least $1,000,000: 7.00%. Largest retirement age for the balance to stay at or below $500,000: 55. Frequently asked questions

How much will I have when I retire?

It depends on your age, your savings, your monthly contribution and the return. On the defaults — age 35 to 65, $50,000 saved, $500 a month at 7% — the balance at 65 is $1,015,810.37, $418,500.42 in today's dollars. Put your own numbers into the calculator above and it works out the balance, the contributions and the growth.

How much do I need to save for retirement?

A common rule of thumb is 10 to 15 times your annual income by 65, but the honest answer is the one your spending gives you. The calculator above shows what your savings become; the retirement savings calculator works out the target from what you plan to spend.

How much should I contribute each month?

On the defaults, $500 a month is the smallest contribution for a balance of at least $1,000,000 by 65 — at $475 the balance is $985,311.10. The calculator's reverses list the contribution for each common target, and a bigger contribution buys back lost years.

What return should I assume for retirement savings?

Seven percent a year is the long-run average of a broad stock market, after inflation it is closer to 4 or 5%. At 5% the balance is $639,516.53 and at 10% it is $2,122,113.93, so the return you assume is the number the answer turns on — try a lower one and see what changes.

Does starting early really matter that much?

Yes, more than the contribution does. Starting at 25 instead of 35 doubles the balance to $2,127,977.27, and starting at 45 instead of 35 more than halves it to $462,400.27 — the same $500 a month, the same 7%, only the years differ.

What are today's dollars in a retirement calculator?

The balance divided by (1 + inflation) raised to the years to retirement — what the money will buy in today's prices. On the defaults the balance is $1,015,810.37, but at 3% inflation it is $418,500.42 in today's dollars. Uncheck the box above to hide it.

How does the 4% rule work?

The 4% rule says you can withdraw 4% of your balance in the first year of retirement and adjust for inflation after that, with a good chance the money lasts 30 years. On the defaults, 4% of $1,015,810.37 is $40,632.41 a year — but the rule is a guide, not a guarantee, and your spending decides what you need.

How do I calculate retirement savings by hand?

Grow the lump sum by (1 + monthly rate) to the power of the months, and grow the contributions by the annuity formula — the monthly payment times ((1 + rate)^months − 1) divided by the rate. On the defaults the $50,000 grows to $405,824.87 and the $500 a month to $609,985.50. The calculator above does it for any inputs.
