Why New Delhi time never shifts
India has kept a single time zone since independence, and it has never observed daylight saving: India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 in January and in July alike. That half-hour offset is the part people get wrong — most world zones sit on whole hours from UTC, so anyone converting in their head and subtracting five hours lands thirty minutes out. The other trap is on the US side, which does move: Eastern time is UTC-5 in winter (EST) and UTC-4 in summer (EDT), so the same noon in Delhi is 01:30 in New York in January but 02:30 in July. The converter handles both sides automatically, using the real calendar rules rather than a fixed offset.
Booking across the capital: government and business hours
New Delhi is India's seat of government, so this converter is built for official business first: ministries, embassies, regulators, and the courts all run on IST, and their working day is roughly 09:30 to 18:00 Delhi time. That window is 04:00 to 12:30 UTC, which means it overlaps the US East Coast morning only at its tail — 09:30 Delhi time is 04:00 UTC, or 23:00 EST the previous night in winter, while 18:00 Delhi time is 12:30 UTC, or 07:30 EST. In practice, the workable overlap for a live call between New Delhi and Washington is a narrow late-evening Delhi slot: 19:00 to 21:30 IST is 08:30 to 11:00 EST in winter. If you are filing a document with a Delhi deadline, confirm whether the deadline is IST or your own local time — a midnight IST filing deadline is 13:30 EST the previous day in winter, and missing that date flip is the most common costly mistake.
Output · formula · meaning
| Output | Formula | What it means |
| UTC time | IST − 5 hours 30 minutes | 12:00 IST − 5:30 = 06:30 UTC, every day of the year. |
| Eastern (January) | UTC − 5 hours (EST) | 06:30 UTC − 5:00 = 01:30 EST, Jan 15. |
| Eastern (July) | UTC − 4 hours (EDT) | 06:30 UTC − 4:00 = 02:30 EDT, Jul 15. |
| Pacific (January) | UTC − 8 hours (PST) | 06:30 UTC − 8:00 = 22:30 PST, Jan 14 — the previous day. |
| Hawaii | UTC − 10 hours (HST) | 06:30 UTC − 10:00 = 20:30 HST, Jan 14 — no daylight saving in Hawaii either. |
Who uses this
- The government-affairs caller: schedules a call with a Delhi ministry inside its 09:30–18:00 IST working day and checks the US-side date before sending the invite.
- The visa and filing applicant: confirms whether a Delhi deadline means IST, so a midnight cutoff does not become a missed day on the US calendar.
- The business team with Delhi partners: finds the narrow live-call overlap — 19:00–21:30 IST is 08:30–11:00 EST in winter — and books inside it.
- The family caller: rings relatives in Delhi at noon IST and knows it is 01:30 in New York in January, so an evening Delhi call works better.
Accuracy & limitations
Conversions use the standard international time-zone database through the browser, so they follow the real daylight-saving rules for each US zone on the date you enter, including the March and November transitions. Two cautions remain. First, the abbreviation IST is shared: Irish Standard Time is also called IST, but it is Ireland's summer time (UTC+1), not India's — if a document says IST in an Irish context, it means something else entirely. Second, the date shown beside each zone is the date in that zone, not the date you entered: a late-evening Delhi time is the previous day across the Americas, and an early-morning Delhi time can be the same day everywhere. Always read the date column before you send an invitation.
