Lawn mowing cost calculator
Put your lawn area, rate per 1,000 sq ft and mows per month in: a 5,000 sq ft lawn at $8 per 1,000 sq ft costs $40 a mow — $160 a month over 4 mows, $1,920 a year.

On the defaults — a 5,000 sq ft lawn at $8 per 1,000 sq ft, mowed 4 times a month — lawn mowing costs $40 a mow, $160 a month, and $1,920 a year. This is the lawn mowing cost tool: divide the area by 1,000 and multiply by the rate for one mow, multiply by the mows for the month, and multiply by twelve for the year — a quote guessed by the garden gate charges for a lawn nobody measured.
Put your lawn area, rate per 1,000 sq ft and mows per month in: a 5,000 sq ft lawn at $8 per 1,000 sq ft costs $40 a mow — $160 a month over 4 mows, $1,920 a year.
It means a 5,000 sq ft lawn mowed at $8 per 1,000 sq ft costs $40 every time the mower comes out, and mowed 4 times a month that is $160 a month, or $1,920 across a year of identical months. The area sets the mow, the rate sets the price of the area, and the mows set only the month and the year: mowing twice as often never changes the price of one mow, only how many of them the year holds. The only judgement is the rate — $8 per 1,000 sq ft suits an ordinary suburban lawn, while slopes, gates, bagging, and edging all push a real quote above a bare area rate.
| Output | Formula | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per mow | area ÷ 1000 × rate | $40 — 5000 ÷ 1000 × $8. |
| Cost per month | per mow × mows | $160 — $40 × 4. |
| Cost per year | monthly × 12 | $1920 — $160 × 12. |
First, check the area honestly: measure the lawn, not the lot — driveways, beds, patios and the house itself are not grass, and a lot quoted as a lawn overcharges every mow. Second, check the rate against what it includes: $8 per 1,000 sq ft for mowing alone is not $8 for mowing, edging, blowing and bagging, and a quote that bundles extras is not comparable with one that does not. Third, check the mows against the season: 4 mows a month suits the growing season, while winter months may need none — a year of 4 mows every month overstates a climate with a dormant season.
5,000 sq ft, $8 per 1,000 sq ft, 4 mows a month. Per mow: 5000 ÷ 1000 × $8 = $40. Monthly: $40 × 4 = $160. Yearly: $160 × 12 = $1920. In practice that means a weekly mow on a 5,000 sq ft lawn costs $40 a visit and $160 a month in season — the number to compare quotes against, and the yearly figure to use when deciding whether a mower of your own would pay for itself.
With a 10,000 sq ft lawn instead of 5,000, the mow rises to $80 — $320 a month, $3840 a year. With a rate of $10 per 1,000 sq ft instead of $8, the mow rises to $50 — $200 a month, $2400 a year. With 2 mows a month instead of 4, the mow stays $40 but the month falls to $80, and the year to $960. With 8 mows a month instead of 4, the mow still stays $40 but the month rises to $320, and the year to $3840.
The area behind $40 a mow is 5,000 sq ft: at 2,500 sq ft the mow is $20 ($80 a month, $960 a year); at 7,500 sq ft it is $60 ($240 a month, $2880 a year). The rate behind $40 a mow is $8: at $6 the mow is $30 ($120 a month, $1440 a year); at $10 it is $50 ($200 a month, $2400 a year). The mows behind $40 a mow are 4: at 2 mows the mow is still $40 ($80 a month, $960 a year); at 6 mows it is still $40 ($240 a month, $2880 a year) — the mows never touch the mow, only the month.
The defaults assume an ordinary flat 5,000 sq ft lawn at $8 per 1,000 sq ft for mowing alone, mowed 4 times a month all year. They do not assume slopes, gated access, bagging, edging, fertilising, or a dormant season — a steep lawn, a bagged cut, and a winter with no growth all change the real quote or the real year, never the area maths.
The arithmetic is exact for the inputs entered; the judgement is the area and the rate. Real lawns are not rectangles, real quotes bundle extras, and real seasons do not mow twelve identical months — so treat $40 as the planning mow for a 5,000 sq ft lawn at $8 per 1,000 sq ft, and compare it against itemised quotes before deciding.

$40 a mow on the defaults: 5000 ÷ 1000 × $8, or $160 a month over 4 mows and $1920 across a year of identical months.
No: mows move only the month and the year. Two mows a month still cost $40 each, but the month falls to $80; eight mows still cost $40 each, but the month rises to $320.
The lawn: driveways, beds, patios and the house are not grass, and quoting the lot as the lawn overcharges every mow. Measure only what the mower actually crosses.
It depends on the quote: some rates cover mowing alone, others bundle edging, blowing and bagging. Compare itemised quotes, not headline rates, because a bundled $10 rate can beat a bare $8 rate.
Because it repeats the same month twelve times. A real year has a growing season and a dormant one, so treat $1920 as the planning year for year-round weekly mowing, not a prediction.
