Lawn Seed Calculator: 33 lb in 2 Bags for 5000 sq ft

On the defaults — 5000 sq ft, 6 lb per 1000 sq ft, 10% waste, 25 lb bags — you need 33 lb of seed, bought as 2 bags. This is the lawn seed tool: measure the lawn once, read the bag rate once, and seed enough for the whole lawn — a lawn seeded short stays thin all season.

Put your lawn area, seed rate, waste and bag size in: 5000 sq ft at 6 lb per 1000 sq ft needs 30 lb before waste, 33 lb with 10% waste, 2 bags at 25 lb a bag.

How big the lawn is in square feet — 5000 sq ft on the defaults. Area moves the seed directly: every extra thousand square feet is another 6 lb at the default rate.

How many pounds of seed go on each 1000 sq ft — 6 lb on the defaults. The bag label gives this rate for new lawns and for overseeding; a new lawn usually wants more than an overseed.

How much extra seed to allow for spillage, birds and thin patches, in percent — 10% on the defaults. Waste moves only the total, never the base: a windy day or a bird-heavy garden wants more.

How many pounds one bag of seed holds — 25 lb on the defaults. Bag size decides only the bag count, never the seed itself: a bigger bag means fewer bags, not less seed.

What does lawn seed needed 33 lb in 2 bags mean?

It means a 5000 sq ft lawn seeded at 6 lb per 1000 sq ft needs 30 lb of seed before waste, and 33 lb once a 10% allowance is added — bought as 2 bags of 25 lb. The base is the area times the rate divided by 1000, the waste is the base times the waste percent, and the bags are the total divided by the bag size, rounded up, because seed is sold by the bag, not by the pound. The second bag is barely opened on the day: 33 lb against two 25 lb bags leaves 17 lb in the second bag, which is the patching seed for thin spots, not waste.

Three things to check before you trust the number

First, measure the lawn, do not guess it: a lawn guessed 1000 sq ft light under-seeds by 6.6 lb at the default rate, which is a visible thin patch across the whole lawn. Second, read the rate off the bag you actually buy, not a typical figure — new lawns and overseeding use different rates, and a bag for shade grass differs from a bag for sun grass. Third, keep the waste allowance honest: 10% suits a calm day on flat ground, while a windy day or a garden full of birds wants 20%. For the ground the seed lands on, the garden bed calculator sizes the soil side of the same garden.

Worked example

5000 sq ft lawn, 6 lb per 1000 sq ft, 10% waste, 25 lb bags. Base: 5000 × 6 ÷ 1000 = 30 lb. Waste: 30 × 10% = 3 lb. Total: 30 + 3 = 33 lb. Bags: 33 ÷ 25 = 1.32, rounded up to 2 bags. In practice that means buying 2 bags, spreading 33 lb, and keeping 17 lb of the second bag for patching the thin spots that show in the first month.

Every branch, checked

With a 10000 sq ft lawn instead of 5000 sq ft, the base rises to 60 lb and the total to 66 lb, in 3 bags. With an 8 lb rate instead of 6 lb, the base rises to 40 lb and the total to 44 lb, still 2 bags. With 20% waste instead of 10%, the base stays 30 lb but the total rises to 36 lb, still 2 bags. With 10 lb bags, the seed stays 33 lb but the bags rise to 4, since one 10 lb bag covers far less of the lawn. Area, rate, waste and bag size each move the order on their own, so a wrong area figure is as costly as a wrong rate.

The reverses, worked backwards

The area behind 33 lb is 5000 sq ft: at 2500 sq ft the need is 16.5 lb in 1 bag (2500 sq ft, 6 lb per 1000 sq ft, 15 lb before waste, 10% waste, 1.5 lb waste, 25 lb bags); at 7500 sq ft it is 49.5 lb in 2 bags (7500 sq ft, 6 lb per 1000 sq ft, 45 lb before waste, 10% waste, 4.5 lb waste, 25 lb bags). The rate behind 33 lb is 6 lb: at 4 lb the need is 22 lb in 1 bag (5000 sq ft, 4 lb per 1000 sq ft, 20 lb before waste, 10% waste, 2 lb waste, 25 lb bags); at 8 lb it is 44 lb in 2 bags (5000 sq ft, 8 lb per 1000 sq ft, 40 lb before waste, 10% waste, 4 lb waste, 25 lb bags). The waste behind 33 lb is 10%: at 0% the need is 30 lb in 2 bags (5000 sq ft, 6 lb per 1000 sq ft, 30 lb before waste, 0% waste, 0 lb waste, 25 lb bags); at 20% it is 36 lb in 2 bags (5000 sq ft, 6 lb per 1000 sq ft, 30 lb before waste, 20% waste, 6 lb waste, 25 lb bags). Each reverse moves one input and holds the rest, so the step is exactly one area, rate or waste change.

What the defaults assume

The defaults assume a 5000 sq ft lawn, a 6 lb per 1000 sq ft rate, a 10% waste allowance, and 25 lb bags. They do not assume a new lawn versus an overseed, a shade mix versus a sun mix, or watering and feeding after seeding — a new lawn usually wants a higher rate than an overseed, and the bag label, not this calculator, sets the rate for the mix you buy.

Accuracy & limitations

The arithmetic is exact for the inputs entered; the judgement is the area and the rate. Real lawns are rarely rectangles, and the tape on the ground overrides any planning figure; a lawn measured from a plan under-counts the curves and the beds, and a rate read off the wrong bag over- or under-seeds the whole lawn. Treat 33 lb as the planning order for a 5000 sq ft lawn at 6 lb per 1000 sq ft with 10% waste, and keep the leftover 17 lb for patching — seed kept dry stores well to the next season.

Frequently asked questions

How much grass seed do I need for 5000 sq ft?

33 lb with 10% waste, bought as 2 bags at 25 lb a bag: 5000 × 6 ÷ 1000 = 30 lb before waste, plus 3 lb waste = 33 lb.

How do I work out lawn seed from a lawn area?

Multiply the area by the seed rate and divide by 1000 for the base, add the waste percent for the total, then divide by the bag size and round up for bags. A 5000 sq ft lawn at 6 lb per 1000 sq ft with 10% waste is 30 lb, 33 lb, 2 bags.

Should I add extra seed for waste?

Yes — 10% on a calm day, 20% on a windy day or where birds feed heavily. Waste covers spillage, seed eaten before it germinates, and the thin patches that need a second pass.

How many bags of grass seed should I buy?

Divide the total by the bag size and round up: 33 lb against 25 lb bags is 1.32, so 2 bags. The leftover 17 lb of the second bag is the patching seed, not a shortage.

Does a bigger bag mean less seed?

No — bag size changes only the bag count. The same lawn needs 33 lb whether the bags hold 25 lb or 10 lb; only the count moves, from 2 bags to 4.

What if I am overseeding, not starting a new lawn?

Use the overseeding rate off the bag, which is usually lower than the new-lawn rate — the same 5000 sq ft at 4 lb per 1000 sq ft needs 22 lb with 10% waste, in 1 bag. The lawn seed coverage chart compares rates side by side.
