Land Area Calculator: Feet to Acres

A 200 × 150 ft lot is 30,000 sq ft — that’s 0.6887 acres, or about two-thirds of an acre. Enter any lot’s dimensions for acres, square yards, square meters, and hectares — or flip to reverse mode and turn acreage back into square feet.

How big is this lot, really?

Dimensions go in, acres come out — plus square yards, square meters, and hectares for good measure. One acre is exactly 43,560 square feet, a legal U.S. definition, not a round number. Reverse mode converts acreage back to square feet.

Dimensions → area converts length × width into acres and friends. Acres → square feet runs it backward from a listing’s acreage.

The lot’s longest side, in the unit you pick below. More than 0, up to 100,000.

The lot’s other side. For a triangle, enter base as length and height as width. More than 0, up to 100,000.

The unit your length and width are measured in. Everything is converted to square feet first, then to acres and the rest.

Rectangle: length × width. Triangle: half of that — enter the base as length and the height as width. Irregular lots: split them into rectangles and triangles and add the results.

The 60-second rule

One acre = 43,560 square feet — a legal U.S. definition, not a round number. So: area in sq ft = length × width, then acres = sq ft ÷ 43,560. A 200 × 150 ft lot = 30,000 sq ft ÷ 43,560 = 0.6887 acres. Going the other way: sq ft = acres × 43,560, so 2.5 acres = 108,900 sq ft.

How big is an acre, really?

Numbers don’t stick; pictures do. An acre is about 90% of an American football field from goal line to goal line (the field without end zones is 48,000 sq ft) — picture the field, then shave a little off. It’s also about 16 tennis courts (a court is 78 × 36 ft), or a square roughly 208.71 ft per side (√43,560). A quarter-acre — the classic suburban lot — is about 75 × 145 ft. And the most common misconception: 200 × 200 ft is NOT an acre — it’s 40,000 sq ft, or 0.9183 acres. Close, but short by a tennis court and change.

The worked example, line by line

Setup: length 200 ft, width 150 ft, rectangle.

Step 1 — square feet. 200 × 150 = 30,000 sq ft.

Step 2 — acres. 30,000 ÷ 43,560 = 0.6887 acres — just over two-thirds of an acre.

Step 3 — the rest. Square yards: 30,000 ÷ 9 = 3,333.33. Square meters: 30,000 ÷ 10.7639 = 2,787.09. Hectares: 30,000 ÷ 107,639 = 0.2787.

Reverse branch — 2.5 acres to square feet: 2.5 × 43,560 = 108,900 sq ft. That’s the number to picture against the football field.

Irregular lots: no lot is a perfect rectangle. Split it into rectangles and triangles on paper, run each through the calculator, and add the acres. A triangle counts half: ½ × base × height ÷ 43,560.

Who uses this

  • The homebuyer reading listings: a 0.6887-acre listing becomes 30,000 sq ft — suddenly comparable to the 200 × 150 ft lot they just walked.
  • The gardener ordering sod: converts the yard to 3,333.33 sq yd because sod is priced by the square yard, not the acre.
  • The small farmer: turns a 2.5-acre field into 108,900 sq ft to sanity-check seed and fertilizer rates.
  • The real-estate agent: quotes the same parcel in acres, sq ft, and hectares without reaching for a phone.

Accuracy & limitations

The conversions are exact by definition: 43,560 sq ft per acre, 9 sq ft per sq yd. What the calculator can’t fix is bad measuring — it assumes a flat plane, so slopes and curves are approximated, and a tape measure pulled at an angle quietly inflates the numbers. For irregular lots, the split-into-shapes method is only as good as your sketch; a surveyor’s plat wins every argument. Results are rounded for readability (acres to 4 decimals); the math underneath uses full precision.

  • 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft: the U.S. legal definition (1 chain × 1 furlong = 66 × 660 ft), standardized in the U.S. survey system.
  • 1 sq yd = 9 sq ft; 1 sq m = 10.7639 sq ft; 1 hectare = 107,639 sq ft (10,000 m²).

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet are in an acre?

Exactly 43,560. It’s a legal U.S. definition — one chain by one furlong (66 × 660 ft) — not a round number, which is why everyone has to look it up.

Is a 200 × 200 ft lot an acre?

No — it’s 0.9183 acres. 200 × 200 = 40,000 sq ft, and 40,000 ÷ 43,560 = 0.9183. It’s the most common acre misconception: close enough to feel right, wrong enough to matter on a deed.

How big is an acre visually?

About 90% of a football field (goal line to goal line, no end zones), about 16 tennis courts, or a square 208.71 ft per side. A quarter-acre — the classic suburban lot — runs about 75 × 145 ft.

How do I measure an irregularly shaped lot?

Split it into rectangles and triangles and add them up. Sketch the lot, divide it into simple shapes, run each through this calculator, and sum the acres. Triangles count half (½ × base × height). For anything legal, trust the surveyor’s plat over your sketch.

What is a hectare, and how does it compare?

A hectare is 10,000 square meters — about 2.471 acres. It’s the standard large-land unit outside the U.S. Our 200 × 150 ft example is 0.2787 hectares.

How do I convert acres back to square feet?

Multiply by 43,560. 2.5 acres × 43,560 = 108,900 sq ft. Flip the mode selector above to “Acres → square feet” and the calculator does it for any listing.
