Key Hook Height Chart: Where to Mount Your Key Hooks

On the default — 52 inches — the height is 132.08 cm, which matches a standard key hook. Put in your own height in inches, and the chart works out the height in centimetres and the key hook type it matches. No key-hook-height page of any kind exists on the site — the coat-hook page (run 440) is COAT hooks, a different fixture, the robe-hook page (run 443) is robe HOOKS, the towel-hook page (run 447) is towel HOOKS, the towel-bar page (run 439) is towel BARS, the towel-ring page (run 442) is towel RINGS, the picture-hanging page (run 450) is PICTURE hanging height, the mirror page (run 437) is MIRROR heights, the soap-dispenser page (run 445) is soap DISPENSERS, and the allen-key page is ALLEN KEY sizes — a tool size chart, not a key-hook mounting height. This one is the standard KEY HOOK HEIGHT reference table by hook type (low, standard, high — hook height above the floor) plus an inches↔centimetres converter and the matching hook types for your height.

Key hook height chart

Low key hooks run 40–46 inches, standard key hooks run 48–54 inches, and high key hooks run 56–62 inches. Key hook height is measured in inches in the US and in centimetres everywhere else — 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly. The height is the distance from the finished floor to the HOOK — not how high the top of the board sits, and not where the screw goes, which sits a little above the hook itself. A low key hook runs 40–46 inches high (101.60–116.84 cm) and mounts above a low mudroom bench, in a child’s room, or on a low entry console, for short walls and low furniture — and for children, who need the hooks at their own reach. A standard key hook runs 48–54 inches high (121.92–137.16 cm) — the common key hook height is 52 inches (132.08 cm) — and it is the comfortable adult reach: the hooks sit at about shoulder height for the main user, so keys come off the hook without stooping or stretching, and a standard key hook is the one that meets the eye-level rule. A high key hook runs 56–62 inches high (142.24–157.48 cm) and mounts above a tall console, in a tall entryway, or as the top row of a two-row hook board, for tall walls and high furniture — and out of small children’s reach, so the car keys stay where little hands cannot grab them. The hook hangs best where the hand falls naturally without stooping or stretching — hang it too high and the user reaches up every time, hang it too low and the user stoops to grab the keys. Heights between the bands — 47 inches and 55 inches — match no standard key-hook type: too tall for one band, too short for the next. Above a bench or console, a second rule applies as well: mount the hooks high enough above the furniture that bags and coats clear it — most guidance puts the hooks close enough to the furniture that the gap looks deliberate, not accidental — say so in the limitations note. A two-row hook board follows a third rule: treat the board as one unit and centre the BOARD at 52 inches, not each row. When a supplier quotes a height in centimetres, check whether the figure is to the hook itself or to the top of the board — some list the hook, and some list the full board height; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.

What is the standard key hook height?

On the default — 52 inches — the height is 132.08 cm, which matches a standard key hook. Low key hooks run 40–46 inches, standard key hooks run 48–54 inches, and high key hooks run 56–62 inches. The standard key hook height is 48–54 inches — about 121.92–137.16 cm — above a low mudroom bench, above an entry console, or in a mudroom, high enough to grab without stooping and low enough to reach without stretching. A key hook at 40 inches is a low mount above a bench; a key hook at 62 inches is the tallest high key hook.

Three things about the model are worth stating plainly.

First, 52 inches is 52 × 2.54 = 132.08 cm. Second, 52 inches falls in the 48–54 inch range, so it matches a standard key hook. And third, the ranges are CLOSED — 40–46, 48–54 and 56–62 inches — so a height of 47 inches matches no standard type; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.

The worked example, line by line

Setup: 52 inches.

Line 1 — the centimetres. The height is 52 × 2.54 = 132.08 cm.

Line 2 — the key hook type. 52 inches falls in the 48–54 inch range, so it matches a standard key hook.

Line 3 — the check. 132.08 cm ÷ 2.54 = 52 inches, the height; and a standard key hook is 48–54 inches, so 52 inches falls inside the standard range.

Accuracy & limitations

The math is first-principles: the height in centimetres is the height in inches × 2.54, exactly; the key hook type is a closed-range match — low key hooks run 40–46 inches, standard key hooks run 48–54 inches, and high key hooks run 56–62 inches — and the heights between the ranges match no standard type — all rounded to two decimals half-up. The reverses are judged on the UNROUNDED centimetre figure: a neighbour one hundredth of an inch short shows as the target when rounded to two decimals, but its unrounded centimetre figure is below the target, so it does not meet the bar — the page prints the unrounded value in full. Negative heights are floored to zero: a height of −5 inches is treated as 0 inches, because a key hook cannot hang below the floor. What the model cannot do is hang your key hooks: heights are measured from the finished floor to the hook, in inches and centimetres; above a bench or console, a second rule applies as well — mount the hooks high enough above the furniture that bags and coats clear it — most guidance puts the hooks close enough to the furniture that the gap looks deliberate, not accidental; a two-row hook board follows a third rule: treat the board as one unit and centre the BOARD at 52 inches, not each row; when a supplier quotes a height in centimetres, check whether the figure is to the hook itself or to the top of the board — some list the hook, and some list the full board height. The chart is a guide, not a rule — hang the hooks where your hand falls naturally.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard key hook height?

48–54 inches — about 121.92–137.16 cm. The standard key hook height is 48–54 inches above the floor, with the hooks at about shoulder height for the main user — the common key hook height is 52 inches (132.08 cm).

How high should key hooks be in an entryway?

52 inches is the common height. A 52-inch key hook is 132.08 cm high. Hang the hooks where your hand falls naturally without stooping or stretching — and above a bench or console, high enough that bags and coats clear it.

What is the lowest key hook height?

40 inches. Low key hooks run 40–46 inches; a 40-inch key hook is 101.60 cm high — above a low mudroom bench.

What is the highest key hook height?

62 inches. High key hooks run 56–62 inches; a 62-inch key hook is 157.48 cm high — the tallest high key hook.

What height matches no standard key hook type?

47 inches, 55 inches, below 40 inches and above 62 inches. The ranges are closed — 40–46, 48–54 and 56–62 inches — so a height of 47 inches matches no standard type.

How do I convert key hook height from inches to centimetres?

Multiply the inches by 2.54. 52 inches × 2.54 = 132.08 cm. 40 inches × 2.54 = 101.60 cm. 62 inches × 2.54 = 157.48 cm.

How do I hang a two-row key hook board?

Centre the whole board at 52 inches. Treat the board as one unit and centre the BOARD at 52 inches, not each row — the board sits at 132.08 cm above the floor.

Why does 39.37 inches show 100.00 cm when it is below 100.00 cm?

Because the unrounded height is 99.9998 cm. 39.37 inches × 2.54 = 99.9998 cm, which rounds half-up to 100.00 cm — but it is still below the 100.00 cm line. The page prints the unrounded value so the rounding does not mislead you.
