Inches to Centimetres Converter: Exact 2.54 Factor

10 inches is exactly 25.4 centimetres — the inch is defined as 2.54 cm, so this conversion is exact, not approximate. Convert either way — inches to centimetres or centimetres to inches — and the converter shows the converted value, the feet-and-inches breakdown and the metres-and-centimetres breakdown. This one is the INCHES-TO-CM tool — inches and centimetres, both directions — the cm-to-inches page is the CM-TO-INCHES tool — centimetres to inches and feet — not the two-way converter; the inches-to-fraction page is the FRACTION CHART — decimal inches to 16ths, 32nds and 64ths — not a centimetre conversion; and the decimal-to-fraction-converter page is the DECIMAL-TO-FRACTION tool — decimals to fractions — not a length conversion. No inches-to-cm converter exists on this site — this one is the first.

Inches to cm converter

The inch is defined as 2.54 cm, exactly, by international agreement since 1959 — so converting inches to centimetres is a multiplication by 2.54 that never rounds, and converting back is a division by 2.54 that usually does. On the defaults it is exact: 10 inches is 25.4 cm. The converter shows the converted value to six places, the feet-and-inches breakdown, and the metres-and-centimetres breakdown.

The length to convert — 10 on the defaults; 0 or more.

What does 25.4 mean?

It means 10 inches is exactly 25.4 centimetres — not approximately 25.4, but exactly 25.4, because the inch is defined as 2.54 cm. The definition has been international since 1959: an inch is 25.4 millimetres, no more and no less. So converting inches to centimetres is a multiplication by 2.54, and converting back is a division by 2.54, and the only place rounding can creep in is the display: 100 cm is 39.370079 inches to six places, because 100 ÷ 2.54 does not terminate. The factor itself never wobbles.

Three things to check before you trust the number

Inches to centimetres is always exact; centimetres to inches usually is not. Multiplying by 2.54 always terminates — 10 × 2.54 is 25.4, 67 × 2.54 is 170.18 — because 2.54 has two decimal places. Dividing by 2.54 usually does not terminate: 1 cm is 0.393701 inches to six places, and the true value continues. If you convert back from the displayed inches, you get 1.000001 cm at six places, not exactly 1 — one unit in the last place, from the rounding, not from the factor.

Feet and inches are the same length, regrouped. 12 inches is 1 foot, so 36 inches is 3 feet and 67 inches is 5 ft 7 in — the breakdown divides the inches by 12 and keeps the remainder. The remainder is the part that gets rounded to six places: 100 cm is 3 ft 3.370079 in, because 100 cm is 39.370079 inches and 39.370079 minus 36 is 3.370079. If the remainder looks wrong, divide the total inches by 12 yourself.

Do not mix the two directions. Multiplying by 2.54 converts inches to centimetres; dividing by 2.54 converts centimetres to inches. Mixing them up gives an answer off by a factor of about 6.45 — 10 inches is 25.4 cm, not 3.94 cm, and 10 cm is 3.937 inches, not 25.4 cm. The direction switch on the calculator exists so you never have to remember which way the factor goes.

Worked example

On the defaults: 10 inches to centimetres.

  1. Take the factor: 1 inch is 2.54 cm, exactly, by definition.
  2. Multiply: 10 × 2.54 is 25.4 cm.
  3. Check the feet-and-inches breakdown: 10 inches is under a foot, so the breakdown is just 10 in.
  4. Check the metres breakdown: 25.4 cm is under a metre, so it stays 25.4 cm.
  5. Check it backwards: 25.4 ÷ 2.54 is 10 — the round trip is exact.

And the other way: 100 cm ÷ 2.54 is 39.370079 inches, which is 3 ft 3.370079 in — the centimetres-to-inches direction, where the six-place display does the rounding.

What the defaults assume

The defaults are 10 inches, chosen because 10 × 2.54 is 25.4 — a round number that shows the factor is exact. They are a starting point, not a lesson: your length may be anything 0 or more, in either direction, and the calculator shows the converted value, the feet-and-inches breakdown, the metres-and-centimetres breakdown, and the verdict. Negative lengths are refused — a length cannot be less than nothing — and 0 converts to 0. Put your number in, pick the direction, and check the working before you use it.

These notes repeat in every explainer section because this page is built to be read start to finish: inches to centimetres is always exact; feet and inches are the same length, regrouped; and the two directions must not be mixed up.

Who uses this

Accuracy & limitations

The factor is exact by definition; only the displayed decimals are rounded (6 places); the ft/in breakdown rounds the leftover inches to 6dp. Inches to centimetres is always exact — 10 × 2.54 is 25.4, with no rounding anywhere. Centimetres to inches is exact as a fraction and rounded to 6 places in the display: 1 cm is 0.393701 inches to six places, and converting back from the displayed value gives 1.000001 cm at six places — one unit in the last place, from the display rounding, not from the factor. The calculator refuses negative lengths and non-numeric input, and 0 converts to 0. Treat the six-place display as the working form and the exact factor as the truth.

Frequently asked questions

How many cm is 10 inches?

10 inches is exactly 25.4 centimetres. The inch is defined as 2.54 cm, so 10 × 2.54 is 25.4 — exact, not approximate.

What is the exact conversion factor from inches to cm?

1 inch = 2.54 cm, exactly, by international definition since 1959. Multiply inches by 2.54 to get centimetres; divide centimetres by 2.54 to get inches.

How many inches is 100 cm?

100 cm is 39.370079 inches — 3 ft 3.370079 in. The value is rounded to six places because 100 ÷ 2.54 does not terminate; converting back from the displayed inches gives 100.000001 cm at six places.

How do you convert 5 ft 7 in to cm?

5 ft 7 in is 67 inches, and 67 × 2.54 is 170.18 cm. Multiply the total inches by 2.54 — the feet-and-inches breakdown does the regrouping first, so you never have to.

Is 12 inches exactly 30.48 cm?

Yes — exactly. 12 × 2.54 is 30.48, and 12 inches is exactly 1 foot, so the breakdown is 1 ft 0 in.

Why is 1 cm 0.393701 inches and not exact?

Because 1 ÷ 2.54 does not terminate — the decimal goes on forever. The exact value is the fraction 50/127 inches; 0.393701 is the value stopped at six places. Inches to centimetres never has this problem, because multiplying by 2.54 always terminates.

How many cm is 1 inch?

1 inch is exactly 2.54 cm. That is the definition itself: an inch is 25.4 millimetres, and 2.54 cm is the same length in centimetres.

What is 36 inches in cm and feet?

36 inches is 91.44 cm — exactly 3 feet. 36 × 2.54 is 91.44, and 36 ÷ 12 is 3, so the breakdown is 3 ft 0 in.
