Centimetres to inches, and back
The conversion is one division: one inch is exactly 2.54 centimetres, fixed by international agreement in 1959, so centimetres divided by 2.54 give inches and inches multiplied by 2.54 give centimetres. A metre is 100 cm, and 100 divided by 2.54 is 39.37 inches — a little over three feet. To get feet and inches, divide the inches by 12 for whole feet and keep the rest: 39.37 inches is 3 feet (36 inches) with 3.37 inches left over, so 100 cm is 3 ft 3.37 in. The same chain gives the foot itself: 30.48 cm divided by 2.54 is exactly 12 inches, which is 1 ft 0 in. Going the other way, 10 inches times 2.54 is exactly 25.40 cm, and 5 cm divided by 2.54 is 1.97 inches.
Worked example: 100 cm and 170 cm
Take 100 cm. Divide by 2.54: 100 ÷ 2.54 = 39.3701 inches, shown as 39.37. Split into feet: 39.3701 ÷ 12 = 3 whole feet, and 39.3701 − 36 = 3.3701 inches left over, shown as 3.37 — so 100 cm is 3 ft 3.37 in. Now take 170 cm, a common adult height. Divide by 2.54: 170 ÷ 2.54 = 66.9291 inches, shown as 66.93. Split into feet: 66.9291 ÷ 12 = 5 whole feet, and 66.9291 − 60 = 6.9291 inches left over, shown as 6.93 — so 170 cm is 5 ft 6.93 in. Every result on this page follows from the same division — there is no rounding in the conversion itself, only in how many decimals the display shows.
Rounding convention, stated plainly: the conversion is exact — centimetres divided by 2.54 is exact, and inches times 2.54 is exact. The display rounds inches and centimetres to two decimals (100 cm is 39.3701 inches, shown as 39.37), so a result such as 1.97 inches for 5 cm is a display rounding of the exact 1.9685, not a different answer. The feet-and-inches remainder is rounded the same way, and when the remainder rounds to 12.00 inches it carries into the next foot.

- The student: converts a 170 cm height to 5 ft 6.93 in for a form that asks for feet and inches.
- The DIYer: turns a 30.48 cm measurement into exactly 1 foot when cutting material to imperial plans.
- The traveller: converts 10 inches of luggage depth to 25.40 cm to check an airline's metric size limit.
Accuracy & limitations
This conversion is exact by definition: one inch is exactly 2.54 centimetres, fixed by international agreement, so there is no measurement error to account for. The only judgement call is display rounding: inches and centimetres are shown to two decimals, so 5 cm shows as 1.97 inches rather than the exact 1.9685. Very large inputs — thousands of centimetres — still convert exactly, but the breakdown is in feet and inches, not yards or miles, so divide the inches by 36 yourself for yards. Negative lengths are not accepted: a length cannot be less than zero, so the converter shows an error instead of a negative result.
