Fraction to Percent Converter

Type any fraction and get the exact percent — 3/8 becomes 37.5%, 2/3 becomes 66.(6)% with the endlessly repeating digit in parentheses. No rounding surprises: the converter shows the true value first, then the rounded one.

Convert a fraction to a percent

On the default, 3/8: 37.5% exactly — it terminates. Try 2/3 and watch a repeater appear: 66.(6)%.

The top number. Whole numbers only — negatives allowed.

The bottom number. Whole numbers only — cannot be zero.

The method: divide, then move the point

A percent is just a fraction of 100, so converting is two moves: divide the top by the bottom, then multiply by 100 (which slides the decimal point two places right). 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375, and 0.375 × 100 = 37.5%. That is all a percent ever is — a fraction wearing a % sign.

Worked examples: 3/8 and 2/3

3/8: 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375 exactly — the division ends. Move the point two places: 37.5%, no rounding involved. 2/3: 2 ÷ 3 = 0.666… — the 6 never stops. Move the point: 66.(6)%, where the parentheses mean “the 6 repeats forever.” Rounded to two decimal places that is 66.67%, but 66.67% is a hair short of the true value — the parentheses show you the truth.

Terminating vs repeating: the 2s-and-5s rule

Whether a fraction terminates or repeats is decided by its denominator’s prime factors — after simplifying. If the only primes are 2s and 5s, it terminates: 8 = 2³ → 37.5%, 20 = 2²×5 → 5%. Any other prime factor means it repeats: 3 → 66.(6)%, 6 = 2×3 → 16.(6)%, 7 → 14.(285714)% with a six-digit cycle, 12 = 2²×3 → 8.(3)%. The converter runs real long division, so it never has to guess which kind you have.

Who uses this

  • Students: “express as a percent” homework, with the exact repeating form for showing your work.
  • Shoppers: translating 3/8 off, 2/3 off and other fractional discounts into real percents.
  • Cooks: baker’s percentages and recipe ratios, where every ingredient is a percent of the flour.
  • Analysts: turning survey fractions and ratios into presentation-ready percents.

Accuracy & limitations

Percents are computed by exact long division to 48 decimal digits with remainder tracking — a repeat is only reported when a remainder genuinely recurs, never by pattern-matching. The parenthesized form (66.(6)%) is the mathematician’s standard notation for a repetend. Rounded values use standard half-up rounding at two decimal places. Inputs must be whole numbers; a zero denominator is rejected.

Want the decimal instead of the percent? The fraction to decimal chart converts with the same repeating-digit notation. Going backward, the decimal to fraction converter turns 0.375 back into 3/8.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert a fraction to a percent?

Divide the top by the bottom, then multiply by 100. 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375, and 0.375 × 100 = 37.5%. The converter above does both steps and flags repeating decimals.

What is 3/8 as a percent?

37.5%. 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375 exactly — the division terminates — and moving the decimal point two places gives 37.5%.

What is 2/3 as a percent?

Exactly 66.(6)% — the 6 repeats forever. Rounded to two decimal places it is 66.67%, which is what most reports print, but the parenthesized form is the true value.

What does 66.(6)% mean?

The digit in parentheses repeats endlessly: 66.666…%. It is the standard mathematical notation for a repeating decimal — more honest than 66.67%, which is rounded and a touch short.

Why do some fractions repeat and others terminate?

It depends on the denominator’s prime factors. Only 2s and 5s → terminates (8 = 2³ → 37.5%). Any other prime → repeats (3 → 66.(6)%, 7 → 14.(285714)%). Simplify first, then check the factors.

What is 1/7 as a percent?

14.(285714)% — a six-digit repeating cycle, approximately 14.29% rounded. Sevenths are famous for this: every multiple of 1/7 cycles the same six digits.

How do I convert a percent back to a fraction?

Drop the % sign, write the number over 100, and simplify: 37.5% = 37.5/100 = 375/1000 = 3/8. The decimal to fraction converter does this instantly.

What is the difference between this and the fraction to decimal chart?

This converter goes straight to percent with repeating-digit notation and rounding. The fraction to decimal chart shows decimal forms plus a full reference table of every 32nd.
