Dusting time calculator
Put your rooms and minutes a room in: 5 rooms at 15 minutes a room take 75 minutes — 1.25 hours of dusting.
★ EVERYDAY · CLEANING · TIME
On the defaults — 5 rooms at 15 minutes a room — dusting time is 75 minutes, or 1.25 hours. This is the dusting time tool: multiply the rooms by the minutes a room for the minutes, divide by 60 for the hours — a house guessed from the room count alone tells you nothing until the pace behind it is known.
Put your rooms and minutes a room in: 5 rooms at 15 minutes a room take 75 minutes — 1.25 hours of dusting.
It means five rooms, each dusted for fifteen minutes, take seventy-five minutes in total, which is one point two five hours of dusting. The rooms set the count, the pace sets the time of every room, and the hour is a fixed sixty minutes: a sixth room adds a full fifteen minutes without quickening any room, and a slower pace adds time to every room without adding a single extra room. The only judgement is the pace — 15 minutes must be the pace actually dusted, not the quick pass hoped for, and the pace that settles the cleaning day is the one the house actually takes, shelves cleared and surfaces wiped included, not the open floor alone.
| Output | Formula | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Total minutes | rooms × minutes a room | 75 minutes — 5 × 15. |
| Total hours | minutes ÷ 60 | 1.25 hours — 75 ÷ 60. |
First, check the rooms honestly: 5 rooms must be rooms actually dusted, not rooms counted twice because they were entered halfway — a room counted that never got dusted adds fifteen phantom minutes to the day. Second, check the pace against the house, not the hope: 15 minutes must be the pace actually dusted, including clearing shelves and wiping surfaces, because a room full of ornaments takes longer than a bare room, and a pace borrowed from the quickest room misstates the total by the whole difference on every room. Third, check the hours against the day: 1.25 hours of dusting is real work, not machine time — the figure to plan around is when the last room finishes, including breaks for shaking out cloths and moving items back into place.
5 rooms, 15 minutes a room. Minutes: 5 × 15 = 75 minutes. Hours: 75 ÷ 60 = 1.25 hours. In practice that means starting by mid-morning if the dusting must be done before guests arrive — the number to set against the day plan, and the 75-minute figure to use when a sixth room is weighed against a faster pace.
At 7 rooms instead of 5, the time rises to 105 minutes — 1.75 hours. At 10 minutes a room instead of 15, the time falls to 50 minutes — 0.83 hours. At 3 rooms instead of 5, the time falls to 45 minutes — 0.75 hours. At 20 minutes a room instead of 15, the time rises to 100 minutes — 1.67 hours.
The rooms behind 75 minutes are 5: at 3 rooms the time is 45 minutes; at 7 rooms it is 105 minutes. The pace behind 75 minutes is 15 minutes: at 10 minutes a room the time is 50 minutes; at 20 minutes a room it is 100 minutes — the pace never touches the room count, only the time each room takes.
The defaults assume 5 rooms dusted back to back at 15 minutes a room, with no gap for shaking out cloths, clearing shelves, or moving items back between rooms. They do not assume a half room, a room skipped because it was recently dusted, or a deep clean behind heavy furniture — a household that clears every shelf needs longer than 1.25 hours from first room to last, so treat 75 as the dusting time, not the whole cleaning day.
The arithmetic is exact for the inputs entered; the judgement is the room count and the true pace. Real dusting varies with ornaments, shelves, surfaces, and clutter — so treat 75 as the planning time for five rooms at a true 15-minute pace, and check it against one timed room before quoting it to anyone else.
Bright Side Kit, “Dusting Time Calculator: 5 Rooms Take 75 Minutes Total”, https://brightoolbox.com/dusting-time-calculator/, accessed 3 November 2026. Students and researchers: cite the calculator name, the page URL and the date you used it, and quote the defaults (5 rooms, 15 minutes a room) so the result can be checked.
75 minutes on the defaults: 5 rooms × 15 minutes = 75 minutes, or 1.25 hours of dusting.
It should: enter the full time a room actually takes, clearing and wiping included. A 10-minute wipe with 5 minutes of clearing and replacing is a 15-minute room, and entering only the wipe understates every room.
Because every ornament must be lifted, wiped under, and set back: rooms full of shelves and ornaments often take longer than bare rooms. Enter the pace the rooms actually take, not the fastest room in the house.
Divide the hour by the pace: 1 hour fits 4 rooms at 15 minutes, and a 10-minute pace fits 6 rooms in an hour — the pace decides the count, not the house.
No: dusting is one chore among several. The 75 minutes is dusting only, and mopping, vacuuming, and bathrooms add their own time on top of it.
That page times mopping across rooms; this page times dusting across rooms. Use that page for the mop, this page for the duster.
