How driveway cost is worked out
A driveway has three costs, not one: the structure, the base prep and the sealing. The area is the length times the width. The structure cost is the area times the price per square foot. The total adds the structure, the base prep and the sealing together, and the all-in cost per square foot is the total divided by the area.
At the defaults — 24 by 12 ft, $8.00/sq ft, base prep $400.00, sealing $150.00 — the area is 24 × 12 = 288.00 sq ft, the structure is 288 × $8.00 = $2,304.00, and the total is $2,304.00 + $400.00 + $150.00 = $2,854.00 — which is $2,854.00 ÷ 288 = $9.91/sq ft all-in.
| Job | Area | Structure | Total | Per sq ft |
| 24 x 12 ft, $8 (default) | 288.00 sq ft | $2,304.00 | $2,854.00 | $9.91 |
| 20 x 10 ft, $8 | 200.00 sq ft | $1,600.00 | $2,150.00 | $10.75 |
| 24 x 12 ft, $12 | 288.00 sq ft | $3,456.00 | $4,006.00 | $13.91 |
| 24 x 12 ft, $6 | 288.00 sq ft | $1,728.00 | $2,278.00 | $7.91 |
| 24 x 12 ft, $8, $0 base prep | 288.00 sq ft | $2,304.00 | $2,454.00 | $8.52 |
| 24 x 12 ft, $8, $0 sealing | 288.00 sq ft | $2,304.00 | $2,704.00 | $9.39 |
| 30 x 12 ft, $8 | 360.00 sq ft | $2,880.00 | $3,430.00 | $9.53 |
The worked example, line by line
Setup: 24 by 12 ft, $8.00/sq ft, base prep $400.00, sealing $150.00, budget $5,000.
Line 1 — the area. 24 × 12 = 288.00 sq ft.
Line 2 — the structure cost. 288.00 × $8.00 = $2,304.00.
Line 3 — the total. $2,304.00 + $400.00 + $150.00 = $2,854.00.
Line 4 — the cost per square foot. $2,854.00 ÷ 288 = $9.91/sq ft all-in.
Line 5 — the budget. A $5,000 budget minus the $400 base prep and the $150 sealing leaves $4,450, and $4,450 ÷ $8.00 = 556.25 sq ft of driveway, which is about 46 by 12 ft. A $3,000 budget buys 306.25 sq ft, which is about 25 by 12 ft.
Every branch, checked
20 by 10 ft: the area is 20 × 10 = 200.00 sq ft, the structure is 200 × $8.00 = $1,600.00 and the total is $2,150.00, or $10.75/sq ft all-in. A smaller driveway costs less in total, but a little more per foot, because the $550 base prep and sealing are spread over fewer feet.
$12.00/sq ft: the structure rises to 288 × $12.00 = $3,456.00, so the total is $4,006.00, or $13.91/sq ft all-in. A pricier surface is stamped concrete, pavers, or a driveway with a decorative border, and the base prep and sealing are still $550.00.
$6.00/sq ft: the structure falls to 288 × $6.00 = $1,728.00, so the total is $2,278.00, or $7.91/sq ft all-in. A cheaper surface is plain gravel or basic asphalt, and the base prep and sealing are still $550.00.
$0 base prep: with no base prep, the total is $2,304.00 + $150.00 = $2,454.00, or $8.52/sq ft all-in. A driveway on ground that is already level and firm saves $400.00, but only if the ground is strong enough to carry cars without the base.
$0 sealing: with no sealing, the total is $2,304.00 + $400.00 = $2,704.00, or $9.39/sq ft all-in. Skipping the seal saves $150.00 now, but the surface wears faster and costs more to fix later.
30 by 12 ft: the area is 30 × 12 = 360.00 sq ft, the structure is 360 × $8.00 = $2,880.00 and the total is $3,430.00, or $9.53/sq ft all-in. A longer driveway costs less per foot than a short one, because the base prep and sealing are spread over more feet.
Reverse — the $5,000 budget: the base prep and sealing take $550 of the budget, leaving $4,450, and $4,450 ÷ $8.00 = 556.25 sq ft of driveway, which is about 46 by 12 ft. A $3,000 budget buys 306.25 sq ft, which is about 25 by 12 ft.
What the defaults assume
The model assumes a flat driveway on level ground: a driveway on a slope, a driveway with a curve, or a driveway that needs drainage changes the structure, because the surface is cut to fit. It assumes the rate per square foot includes the material and the labour, which is right for a contractor quote but not for materials bought alone. It assumes the base prep is one flat fee: a driveway that needs deep excavation will cost more than $400.00. It leaves out the permit, the curb cut, the drainage, and tax — ask the contractor whether the quote includes those. Rounding convention: money is rounded to cents, areas to 2 decimals, and all figures are computed from unrounded values, rounded only for display.

Who uses this
- The homeowner replacing a cracked driveway: they learn a 24 by 12 ft driveway costs $2,854.00 — $2,304.00 of structure and $550.00 of base prep and sealing — so they know the exact number before they call the contractor, and they know it is $9.91 a square foot, not a guess.
- The couple choosing between concrete and asphalt: a concrete driveway costs $2,854.00 for this yard at $8.00 a square foot, and asphalt at $6.00 a square foot costs $2,278.00 — so they check the two surfaces against each other before they decide, because concrete lasts longer and asphalt costs less.
- The landlord paving a rental: they learn a 20 by 10 ft driveway costs $2,150.00 — and they learn the base prep and sealing are $550 of $2,150, so paving the driveway in one go is cheaper than patching it year after year.
- The renovator on a $5,000 budget: they learn $5,000 covers 556.25 sq ft — so they know the 46 by 12 ft driveway fits with room to spare, and the 30 by 12 ft driveway leaves money for the sealing too.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is exact for the numbers you enter: the area is the length times the width, the structure is the area times the rate, and the total adds the base prep and the sealing. What the model cannot do is measure your driveway for you: measure the run you drive, and for a driveway that curves or follows a slope, measure the driveway, not the straight-line distance. It leaves out the permit, the curb cut, the drainage, and tax — ask the contractor whether the quote includes those. It assumes the rate per square foot includes the material and the labour, and that the base prep is one flat fee. For the concrete for the same driveway, see concrete driveway calculator; for concrete against asphalt, see concrete vs asphalt driveway.
