What does a 36-inch standard door handle mean?
On the default — a handle center 36 inches above the floor — the centimetres are 91.44 cm and the type is a standard door handle. The handle height is the CENTER of the handle above the floor, and 36 inches is the classic handle height — the middle of the 34–38 in standard zone. The centimetres are the inches times 2.54: 36 × 2.54 = 91.44 cm. The bands are CLOSED at both ends: low 28–33 in, standard 34–38 in, high 39–44 in above the floor. Heights between the bands (33.01–33.99 in and 38.01–38.99 in) match NO standard type — the bands have gaps, they are not continuous — and heights of 45 in and above, and below 28 in, match NO standard type either.
Three things about the model are worth stating plainly.
First, the conversion is 36 × 2.54 = 91.44 cm. Second, the meaning is a handle center 36 inches above the floor — the middle of the usual 34–38 in range, comfortable for standing adults and reachable from a wheelchair. And third, the centimetre figure is displayed to two decimals, half-up, and a figure that displays as 89.99 cm can sit a hair below the line — 35.43 in gives 89.9922 cm, which displays as 89.99 cm — and one that displays as 100.00 cm can sit a hair below it — 39.37 in gives 99.9998 cm, which displays as 100.00 cm. The page prints the unrounded value so the rounding does not mislead you.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: handle center 36 inches above the floor.
Line 1 — the centimetres. 36 × 2.54 = 91.44 cm.
Line 2 — the type. 36 inches sits inside the 34–38 in standard band, so the type is a standard door handle.
Line 3 — the check. At 35.44 inches the centimetres are 90.02 cm; and at 35.43 inches they are 89.99 cm — below 90.00 cm.

The table runs from 30 to 41 inches in one-inch steps. Every height in the table sits inside one of the three bands: 30–33 in are low handles, 34–38 in are standard handles and 39–41 in are high handles. The bands are closed at both ends — 33 in is a low handle, 38 in is a standard handle and 44 in is a high handle. Heights between the bands (33.01–33.99 in and 38.01–38.99 in) match NO standard type, and heights of 45 in and above, and below 28 in, match NO standard type either.
30 in: 30 in = 76.20 cm; matches low door handle (1 type) — 30 inches is the bottom of the table, a low handle.
32 in: 32 in = 81.28 cm; matches low door handle (1 type) — 32 inches is a low handle, two inches above the bottom of the table.
34 in: 34 in = 86.36 cm; matches standard door handle (1 type) — 34 inches is the bottom of the standard band.
36 in: 36 in = 91.44 cm; matches standard door handle (1 type) — 36 inches is the classic handle height, the middle of the standard zone.
38 in: 38 in = 96.52 cm; matches standard door handle (1 type) — 38 inches is the top of the standard band.
40 in: 40 in = 101.60 cm; matches high door handle (1 type) — 40 inches is a high handle, one inch above the bottom of the high band.
Centimetre bars — 33 in, 36 in, 39 in: 33 in: 83.82 cm — low door handle; 36 in: 91.44 cm — standard door handle; 39 in: 99.06 cm — high door handle — one height from each band: the top of the low band, the middle of the standard band and the bottom of the high band.
The reverses, worked backwards
Smallest height for the cm figure to reach 90.00 cm: At the displayed 35.44 in the figures are 35.44 in = 90.02 cm (unrounded 90.0176 cm); matches standard door handle (1 type). At 35.43 in the figure is 89.99 cm (unrounded 89.9922 cm), below 90.00 cm — so 35.44 in is the smallest height that reaches 90.00 cm.
Largest height for the cm figure to STAY at or below 85.00 cm: At the displayed 33.46 in the figures are 33.46 in = 84.99 cm (unrounded 84.9884 cm); matches no standard type. At 33.47 in the figure is 85.01 cm (unrounded 85.0138 cm), above 85.00 cm — so 33.46 in is the largest height that stays at or below 85.00 cm.
Smallest height to match a standard door handle: At the displayed 34.00 in the figures are 34.00 in = 86.36 cm (unrounded 86.3600 cm); matches standard door handle (1 type). At 33.99 in the figure is 86.33 cm (unrounded 86.3346 cm) and it matches NO standard type at all — so 34.00 in is the smallest height that matches a standard door handle.
Smallest height for the cm figure to reach 100.00 cm: At the displayed 39.38 in the figures are 39.38 in = 100.03 cm (unrounded 100.0252 cm); matches high door handle (1 type). At 39.37 in the figure is 100.00 cm (unrounded 99.9998 cm), below 100.00 cm though it displays as the target — so 39.38 in is the smallest height that reaches 100.00 cm.
Largest height for the cm figure to STAY at or below 95.00 cm: At the displayed 37.40 in the figures are 37.40 in = 95.00 cm (unrounded 94.9960 cm); matches standard door handle (1 type). At 37.41 in the figure is 95.02 cm (unrounded 95.0214 cm), above 95.00 cm — so 37.40 in is the largest height that stays at or below 95.00 cm.
Smallest height to match a high door handle: At the displayed 39.00 in the figures are 39.00 in = 99.06 cm (unrounded 99.0600 cm); matches high door handle (1 type). At 38.99 in the figure is 99.03 cm (unrounded 99.0346 cm) and it matches NO standard type at all — so 39.00 in is the smallest height that matches a high door handle.
A warning about the neighbours: every neighbour above sits one hundredth of an inch from the star, and every neighbour centimetre figure is a hair below or above the target even though it displays as the target — a 0.01 in move changes the centimetres by less than 0.005, so the displayed two-decimal figure cannot tell the star from its neighbour. The page prints the unrounded four-decimal value in full so the rounding does not mislead you: 90.0176, 89.9922, 84.9884, 85.0138, 86.3346, 100.0252, 99.9998, 94.9960, 95.0214, 99.0346.
What the defaults assume
The defaults are a handle center 36 inches above the floor — 36 in = 91.44 cm; matches standard door handle (1 type). With 30 in, 30 in = 76.20 cm; matches low door handle (1 type). With 32 in, 32 in = 81.28 cm; matches low door handle (1 type). With 34 in, 34 in = 86.36 cm; matches standard door handle (1 type). With 36 in, 36 in = 91.44 cm; matches standard door handle (1 type). With 38 in, 38 in = 96.52 cm; matches standard door handle (1 type). With 40 in, 40 in = 101.60 cm; matches high door handle (1 type). With Centimetre bars — 33 in, 36 in, 39 in, 33 in: 83.82 cm — low door handle; 36 in: 91.44 cm — standard door handle; 39 in: 99.06 cm — high door handle. With Height 0, 0 in = 0.00 cm; matches no standard type — no height at all, and no matching type. With Height -5, 0 in = 0.00 cm; matches no standard type — a negative height is floored to 0.00 cm, never a negative number. With Height 35.43, 35.43 in = 89.99 cm (unrounded 89.9922 cm); matches standard door handle (1 type) — the centimetre figure displays as 89.99 cm. With Height 33.5, 33.50 in = 85.09 cm; matches no standard type — in the gap between the low and standard bands, so no standard type. With Height 38.5, 38.50 in = 97.79 cm; matches no standard type — in the gap between the standard and high bands, so no standard type. With Heights 28, 36 and 48, 28 in = 71.12 cm — low door handle; 36 in = 91.44 cm — standard door handle; 48 in = 121.92 cm — matches no standard type — the bottom of the low band, the classic standard height, and past the high band. With Height 27.5, 27.50 in = 69.85 cm; matches no standard type — below the 28-in low band, so no standard type. With Height 34.5, 34.50 in = 87.63 cm; matches standard door handle (1 type) — inside the standard band.
A note on the rounding: the centimetre figure is displayed to two decimals, half-up. With height 35.43 in the unrounded figure is 89.9922 cm — it displays as 89.99 cm. The page prints the unrounded value so the rounding does not mislead you.

Who uses this
- The homeowner hanging a new door: they learn a handle center 36 inches above the floor is 91.44 cm and a standard door handle — and they check the 35.44 in reverse to see the smallest height that reaches 90.00 cm.
- The builder fitting handles through a house: they learn the standard zone is 34–38 in and the bands are closed at both ends — and they check the 39.00 in reverse to see the smallest height that matches a high door handle.
- The parent lowering a handle for children: they learn mounting lower (28–33 in) suits children and shorter users but is a stoop for most adults — and they check the 33.46 in reverse to see the largest height that stays at or below 85.00 cm.
- The student learning the ADA rules: they learn the ADA requires door-hardware operable parts 34–48 in above the floor — and they check the 37.40 in reverse to see the largest height that stays at or below 95.00 cm.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is first-principles: the centimetres are the height in inches times 2.54, and the type comes from the closed bands — low 28–33 in, standard 34–38 in, high 39–44 in above the floor (handle CENTER height above the floor) — all in inches and centimetres, the centimetre figure displayed to two decimals half-up. There is no division in this calculator — nothing is ever undefined. A negative height is floored to 0.00 cm, never a negative number. With height 35.43 in the unrounded figure is 89.9922 cm — it displays as 89.99 cm. The ADA requires door-hardware operable parts 34–48 in above the floor; the standard residential handle center is 36 in (the middle of the usual 34–38 in range — comfortable for standing adults and reachable from a wheelchair); mounting lower (28–33 in) suits children and shorter users but is a stoop for most adults; mounting higher (39–44 in) is out of comfortable reach for children and wheelchair users, though reachable standing; above 44 in is beyond any normal handle height (that is cabinet/doorbell height). This is why the door-handle standard zone ends at 38 in, while the light-switch standard runs to 48 in — a handle must be gripped and turned, a switch only pressed. What the model cannot do is set the height for you: it says nothing about the door, the lock or the person using it — a handle that suits a tall adult can be a stretch for a child. Use it to check the height before you drill — then check the light-switch, bathroom-shelf, towel-bar, door-size and upper-cabinet charts before you set the rest of the room.
No door-handle page of any kind exists on the site — this is the first. The closest pages are the light-switch height chart (a SWITCH — standard 48 in, bands 44–48 in — not a handle), the bathroom-shelf height chart (a SHELF above a vanity — bands 40–47/48–60/61–68 in — not a handle), the towel-bar height chart (a towel bar — not a handle), the door-size chart (the DOOR slab size — not the handle height) and the upper-cabinet height chart (enclosed CABINETS — bands 48–53/54–66/67–72 — not a handle). This one is the DOOR HANDLE mounting-height reference: the handle CENTER above the floor, anchored to the 36-in standard (standard zone 34–38 in).

Frequently asked questions
What height should a door handle be?
36 inches above the floor. A standard door handle mounts 36 inches above the floor — 91.44 cm from floor to handle center. The standard zone is 34–38 in.
How do I convert door handle height from inches to centimetres?
Multiply the inches by 2.54. 36 × 2.54 = 91.44 cm. A 30-inch handle is 76.20 cm and a 41-inch handle is 104.14 cm.
What are the door handle height bands?
Low 28–33 in, standard 34–38 in, high 39–44 in. The bands are closed at both ends and have gaps: 33.01–33.99 in and 38.01–38.99 in match no standard type.
What is the smallest height that reaches 90.00 cm?
35.44 inches. The smallest height for the centimetre figure to reach 90.00 cm is 35.44 in, which is 90.02 cm (unrounded 90.0176 cm). At 35.43 in the figure is 89.99 cm (unrounded 89.9922 cm), below 90.00 cm.
What is the smallest height that matches a standard door handle?
34.00 inches. The smallest height that matches a standard door handle is 34.00 in, which is 86.36 cm. At 33.99 in the figure is 86.33 cm (unrounded 86.3346 cm) and it matches no standard type.
Can a door handle be too high?
Yes — above 44 inches. Heights of 45 in and above match no standard type — that is cabinet and doorbell height, beyond any normal handle height. Mounting higher (39–44 in) is out of comfortable reach for children and wheelchair users.
What is the difference between door handle height and light switch height?
One is gripped and turned, the other only pressed. A door handle mounts 36 inches above the floor with a standard zone of 34–38 in; a light switch mounts 48 inches above the floor with a standard zone of 44–48 in. Work it out in the light switch height chart.
