DIY vs Hire Wallpaper Removal: Which One Costs Less?

On the defaults — stripping wallpaper off 400 square feet, $1.50 of materials per square foot, $150 of supplies and 16 hours at $45 an hour, against a pro price of $5.50 per square foot — doing it yourself costs $1,470.00 against a $2,200.00 pro quote: DIY wins by $730.00. Put in your own square feet, materials, supplies, hours, hourly value and pro price, and the calculator works out the DIY cost, the pro cost, and who wins by how much. No wallpaper-REMOVAL comparison exists on the site — the painter, wallpaper-installation, floor-refinishing, drywall-installation and cabinet-refacing DIY-vs-hire pages price different jobs, and the wallpaper-roll-chart page is a chart for how many ROLLS to buy, not a cost comparison. This one prices stripping old wallpaper off a 400 square-foot area from scratch — steamer, supplies and your hours — against a pro price per square foot.

DIY vs hire wallpaper removal calculator

DIY cost = square feet × materials per square foot + supplies + hours × hourly value; pro cost = square feet × pro price per square foot. Stripping wallpaper means steaming, soaking and scraping old paper off the wall — the wall stays, only the surface comes off. A pro wallpaper removal is usually priced per square foot — and a typical room is 200–400 square feet of wall. A pro job usually runs $2–$7 per square foot depending on the number of layers, the adhesive and the condition of the walls, so a 400 sq ft room commonly lands between $800 and $2,800 for the work alone. Labour is often 60% or more of the pro price, which is why doing it yourself saves so much — but a pro crew strips a room in one day while a DIYer working evenings and weekends can take a full weekend plus drying and patching time, and a room full of steamer vapour means living around it. Common DIY materials: a steamer rental or a spray bottle with hot water and fabric softener, a wide scraper, a scoring tool, drop cloths, spackle and primer for the bare wall underneath. Old paper often hides a second layer underneath — a painted-over layer can double the hours, because every layer must come off before the wall can be primed. The risks of doing it yourself: gouged drywall, torn paper backing that stays glued on, adhesive residue that shows through new paint, mould behind the paper, and lead paint in homes built before 1978 — test first, never sand it dry. Stripping wallpaper is worth doing yourself when the paper is one strippable layer, the walls are sound drywall, and you have time. A pro is worth it when the paper is painted over, there are several layers, the walls are plaster, the ceilings are high, or the deadline is tight — most pro jobs carry a labour warranty the DIY route does not. If the DIY cost and the pro cost are equal, that is a dead heat, not a win either way; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.

Is DIY cheaper for wallpaper removal?

On the defaults — a 400 square-foot area, $1.50 of materials per square foot, $150 of supplies, 16 hours at $45 an hour, against a pro price of $5.50 per square foot — stripping the wallpaper yourself costs $1,470.00 against a $2,200.00 pro quote: DIY wins by $730.00. A 400 sq ft room is a middle-of-the-road job — big enough to matter, small enough to strip yourself. DIY is worth it when the paper is one strippable layer, the walls are sound drywall, and you have time; hire a pro when the paper is painted over, there are several layers, the walls are plaster, the ceilings are high, or the deadline is tight — most pro jobs carry a labour warranty the DIY route does not.

Three things about the model are worth stating plainly.

First, the DIY cost is 400 × $1.50 + $150 + 16 × $45 = $1,470.00. Second, the pro cost is 400 × $5.50 = $2,200.00. And third, DIY wins by $730.00; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.

The worked example, line by line

Setup: 400 square feet, $1.50 of materials per square foot, $150 of supplies, 16 hours at $45 an hour, pro price $5.50 per square foot.

Line 1 — the DIY cost. The DIY cost is 400 × $1.50 = $600.00 of materials, + $150.00 of supplies, + 16 × $45.00 = $720.00 of labour = $1,470.00.

Line 2 — the pro cost. The pro cost is 400 × $5.50 = $2,200.00.

Line 3 — who wins. $2,200.00 − $1,470.00 = $730.00, so DIY wins by $730.00.

Line 4 — the check. $600.00 + $150.00 + $720.00 = $1,470.00, the DIY cost; and $2,200.00 − $1,470.00 = $730.00, the DIY win.

Smallest hourly value where hiring WINS: At the displayed $91 the figures are DIY $2,206.00; pro $2,200.00 — Hiring wins by $6.00. At the displayed $91 the DIY cost is $2,206.00 against a $2,200.00 pro quote, so hiring wins by $6.00. At $90 the DIY cost is $2,190.00 and DIY wins by $10.00 — not a tie: $90.625 is not a whole-dollar hourly value — so $91 is the smallest hourly value where hiring wins.

At $85 the DIY cost is $2,110.00 and DIY wins by only $90.00 — under the $100 target — so $84 is the largest hourly value where DIY still wins by at least $100.

Smallest supplies where hiring WINS: At the displayed $881 the figures are DIY $2,201.00; pro $2,200.00 — Hiring wins by $1.00. At $880 the DIY cost is $2,200.00, exactly the pro cost — a dead heat, a TIE, not a hiring win — so $881 is the smallest supplies where hiring wins.

Smallest whole-cent materials where hiring WINS: At the displayed $3.33 the figures are DIY $2,202.00; pro $2,200.00 — Hiring wins by $2.00. At the displayed $3.33 the DIY cost is $2,202.00 against a $2,200.00 pro quote, so hiring wins by $2.00. At $3.32 the DIY cost is $2,198.00 and DIY wins by $2.00 — not a tie: $3.325 is not a whole-cent materials price — so $3.33 is the smallest whole-cent materials where hiring wins.

At the displayed 33 hours the DIY cost is $2,235.00 against a $2,200.00 pro quote, so hiring wins by $35.00. At 32 hours the DIY cost is $2,190.00 and DIY wins by $10.00 — so 33 is the smallest hours where hiring wins.

Smallest pro price per square foot where DIY wins at all: At the displayed $4 the figures are DIY $1,470.00; pro $1,600.00 — DIY wins by $130.00. At the displayed $4 per square foot the pro cost is $1,600.00 against a $1,470.00 DIY cost, so DIY wins by $130.00. At $3 per square foot the pro cost is $1,200.00 and the pro wins by $270.00 — not a tie: $3.675 is not a whole-dollar pro price — so $4 is the smallest pro price where DIY wins at all.

A warning about the neighbours: every neighbour above sits one step from the star — $1 of supplies, one cent of materials, one hour, one dollar of hourly value, one dollar of pro price. A pro quote that moves by a dollar changes the answer. The page prints the neighbour values in full so the rounding does not mislead you: at $90 the DIY cost is $2,190.00 and DIY wins by $10.00; at $85 DIY wins by only $90.00; at $880 the DIY cost is $2,200.00, a dead heat; at $3.32 the DIY cost is $2,198.00 and DIY wins by $2.00; at 32 hours the DIY cost is $2,190.00 and DIY wins by $10.00; at $3 per square foot the pro cost is $1,200.00 and the pro wins by $270.00.

Accuracy & limitations

The math is first-principles: the DIY cost is square feet × materials per square foot + supplies + hours × hourly value; the pro cost is square feet × pro price per square foot; the winner is the lower cost, and equal costs are a dead heat — all rounded to two decimals half-up. What the model cannot do is price your walls: pro prices vary by region and by the number of layers, the adhesive and the condition of the walls — a pro job usually runs $2–$7 per square foot; materials vary by grade; old paper often hides a second layer underneath — a painted-over layer can double the hours, because every layer must come off before the wall can be primed; the hourly value is your own time, so price it honestly — an hour of your weekend is worth more than an hour you would spend idle. The model also cannot see the walls: gouged drywall, torn paper backing that stays glued on, adhesive residue that shows through new paint, mould behind the paper, and lead paint in homes built before 1978 are all risks the calculator cannot price — test first, never sand it dry; and it does not include permits, inspections, or a pro’s labour warranty. Use it to see the money — then walk the walls and check the layers before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to strip wallpaper yourself?

$1,470.00 for a 400 square-foot area. 400 × $1.50 of materials is $600.00, plus $150 of supplies, plus 16 hours at $45 an hour is $720.00 — $1,470.00 in all.

How much does a pro charge to strip wallpaper?

$2,200.00 for a 400 square-foot area. A pro wallpaper removal usually runs $2–$7 per square foot; at $5.50 per square foot a 400 sq ft room is $2,200.00. A 400 sq ft pro job commonly lands between $800 and $2,800.

Is it cheaper to strip wallpaper yourself?

Yes, on the defaults — by $730.00. DIY costs $1,470.00 against a $2,200.00 pro quote. But the answer flips if your time is expensive: at an hourly value of $91, hiring wins by $6.00.

When should I hire a pro instead?

When the paper is painted over, there are several layers, the walls are plaster, the ceilings are high, or the deadline is tight. A pro crew strips a room in one day; a DIYer takes a full weekend plus drying and patching time — and most pro jobs carry a labour warranty the DIY route does not.

What materials does a DIY wallpaper removal need?

A steamer rental or a spray bottle with hot water and fabric softener, a wide scraper, a scoring tool, drop cloths, spackle and primer for the bare wall underneath. On the defaults the materials cost $600.00 for a 400 square-foot area.

How long does a DIY wallpaper removal take?

A full weekend plus drying and patching time, working evenings and weekends. A pro crew strips a room in one day — the DIY route trades money for time, and a room full of steamer vapour means living around it.

What if the DIY cost and the pro cost are equal?

That is a dead heat, a TIE. At supplies of $880 the DIY cost is $2,200.00 — exactly the pro cost — so neither side wins.

Why does the calculator show $1,149.88 for the edge case?

Because the unrounded DIY cost is 1149.875. With 350 square feet, materials $1.625, supplies $137.50, 10.5 hours at $42.25 an hour and a pro price of $5.25 per square foot, the unrounded DIY cost is 1149.875 — which rounds half-up to $1,149.88 — and the unrounded win is 687.625 — which rounds half-up to $687.63. The page prints the unrounded values so the rounding does not mislead you.
