Debt Consolidation vs Balance Transfer: Which Saves More?

On the defaults — $10,000.00 over 18 months, a 12.00% consolidation loan against a 3.00% fee, 0% for 15 months then 24.99% — the transfer costs $10,369.56 and the loan $10,976.77: the balance transfer wins by $607.21. This one is the 0%-INTRO + TRANSFER-FEE comparison — the intro window, the fee added to the balance, and the post-intro rate on what is left, over the same 18 months, with the fee, loan-rate and intro-months reverses — the credit-card-vs-personal-loan page is the GENERAL card-vs-loan comparison — one rate against another, no intro window, no transfer fee — not the 0% mechanics.

Debt consolidation vs balance transfer calculator

Put your debt, term, loan rate, transfer fee, intro months and post-intro rate in: $10,000.00 over 18 months is $10,976.77 through the loan and $10,369.56 through the transfer. The window, not the post-intro rate, is the decision.

The debt you are paying off — $10,000 on the defaults. One balance, or several cards combined into one number.

How many months to clear the debt — 18 on the defaults. Both options use the same term, so the totals compare fairly.

The fixed yearly rate on the consolidation loan — 12% on the defaults. No fee on the loan in this model.

The one-time fee to move the debt, as a percentage — 3% on the defaults ($300 on $10,000), added to the new balance at once.

How many months the transfer charges 0% — 15 on the defaults. Typical offers run 12 to 21 months; the rest of the term pays the post-intro rate.

The yearly rate after the intro period ends — 24.99% on the defaults, inside the 16.74% to 27.49% range on current cards.

What does the transfer winning by $607.21 mean?

It means that, over 18 months, the same $10,000.00 costs $10,369.56 through the balance transfer and $10,976.77 through the consolidation loan — a $607.21 gap, on the same payoff term. The gap is not the rate: the loan charges 12% for all 18 months, while the transfer charges 0% for 15 months and 24.99% for only the last 3, on a balance that is already mostly paid down by then. The transfer pays $69.56 of interest and a $300.00 fee; the loan pays $976.77 of interest and no fee. The fee is the transfer's whole price for 15 interest-free months — and at 3% it is cheap against 18 months of 12% interest. The monthly payments tell the same story the other way: the transfer payment is $576.09 a month against the loan's $609.82 — lower every month, because less of each payment is interest.

Three things to check before you trust the number

The transfer wins only inside the 0% window. At 15 intro months the transfer wins by $607.21; at 12 intro months it wins by $434.21; at 7 intro months the loan wins, and at 8 the transfer wins — the crossing sits between them. The reason is the shape of the balance: every month at 0% takes a full payment off the principal, so by the time the 24.99% rate starts, only a small balance is left for it to bite on. Shrink the window and the rate gets a bigger balance for longer, and the fee stays the same — that is why the intro length, not the post-intro rate, is the lever. The post-intro rate barely matters here: even at 300% post-intro APR the transfer total stays below the loan total, because only 3 months of that rate fall on a small remaining balance. Do not shop on the post-intro rate; shop on the window.

The fee is the transfer's break-even, and it is high. The fee would have to rise to about 9.03% — $903.00 on $10,000.00 — before the transfer ties the loan, against a typical fee of 3% to 5%. At 5% the transfer still wins by $405.86. And the loan rate would have to fall to about 4.62% before the loan ties the transfer — a rate most unsecured consolidation loans do not offer. Both reverses say the same thing: on these numbers the transfer's win is not marginal, it is wide, and it survives a much worse fee or a much cheaper loan than the ones on offer. The win breaks only when the window shrinks below 8 months, or when the balance is not cleared inside the window at all.

The model assumes the balance clears in the term — the real risk is that it does not. Both payments here are sized to clear the debt in 18 months: $609.82 a month for the loan, $576.09 a month for the transfer. Pay only the minimum on the transfer card and the balance survives past month 15, and everything left pays 24.99% until it is gone — the exact cost this page prices at only $69.56 on the assumption the plan holds. New purchases on the transfer card make it worse: most cards apply payments to the lowest-rate balance first, so new spending at the regular rate sits unpaid until the transferred balance is gone. And a missed payment can end the 0% period early on many cards. The transfer is the cheaper tool only with the discipline to match — the payment, every month, no new spending on that card.

Worked example

On the defaults: $10,000 over 18 months, consolidation loan 12% APR with no fee, balance transfer 3% fee, 0% for 15 months then 24.99% APR.

  1. The loan payment: $10,000 at 1.00% a month over 18 months is $609.82 a month.
  2. The loan total: $609.82 × 18 is $10,976.77, so the interest is $976.77.
  3. The transferred balance: $10,000 × 1.03 is $10,300.00, a $300.00 fee.
  4. The transfer payment: $10,300.00 ÷ 17.88 is $576.09 a month, sized to clear the balance in 18 months.
  5. The transfer total: $576.09 × 18 is $10,369.56, so the interest is $69.56.
  6. The winner: $10,976.77 − $10,369.56 is $607.21 — the balance transfer wins.

And the other way: the fee that ties the loan is about 9.03%, the loan rate that ties the transfer is about 4.62%, and the transfer starts winning at 8 intro months.

The reverses, worked backwards

What the defaults assume

The defaults are $10,000 of debt over 18 months, a consolidation loan at 12% APR fixed with no fee, and a balance transfer with a 3% fee, 0% for 15 months and 24.99% APR after. The transfer fee is added to the new balance at once — $300 on $10,000, making a $10,300 balance — which is how issuers charge it. The transfer payment is sized to clear the transferred balance in exactly the term: the intro months at 0% plus the remaining months amortized at the post-intro rate, so the payment is $576.09 a month and the balance hits zero in month 18. The loan payment is the standard amortization formula at the loan rate over the same term. Intro months are capped at the term: a 12-month term with a 15-month intro is 12 months at 0%, which is why the 12-month branch pays no transfer interest at all. The model charges no annual fee on either option, no late fees, no penalty APR for missed payments, and no interest on new purchases — all real costs that sit outside the comparison and all reasons the transfer needs the discipline the page describes. The fee and loan-rate reverses are rounded stars (about 9.03% and about 4.62%): at each rounded star the transfer still wins by under $0.20, and the flip sits between the star and the upper neighbor. The model does not check credit limits, approval odds or the credit-score effect of opening a new card — all of which decide whether the transfer is available at all.

These notes repeat in every explainer section because this page is built to be read start to finish: the transfer wins only inside the 0% window; the fee is the transfer's break-even, and it is high; and the model assumes the balance clears in the term — the real risk is that it does not.

Accuracy & limitations

Figures are the model's own totals on the numbers you type, computed from unrounded values: each monthly payment is the standard amortization payment at the applicable rate over the applicable months, the transfer payment divides the transferred balance by the combined factor of the intro months plus the post-intro amortization factor, each total is the payment times the term, each interest figure is the total minus the balance it pays off, and the margin is the higher total minus the lower total. The displayed figures are rounded to 2dp. The transfer payment is sized to clear the balance in exactly the term — a borrower paying less leaves a balance at the post-intro rate, which this model does not price. The loan-rate reverse is found by bisection (no closed form exists for the rate) and the fee reverse is closed-form; both are stated as rounded stars, and at each rounded star the transfer still wins by under $0.20. Typical market terms — fees 3% to 5%, intro periods 12 to 21 months, post-intro APRs roughly 16.74% to 27.49% — are the published ranges on current cards, not a quote for any borrower; the rate and fee any individual is offered depend on credit. The model charges no annual fee, late fee, penalty APR or purchase interest, and it does not check approval, credit limits or credit-score effects. This page is a calculation tool, not financial advice, and not a credit offer.

Frequently asked questions

Is a balance transfer or a consolidation loan better?

On the defaults, the balance transfer — $10,369.56 against $10,976.77, a $607.21 saving. The 15 months at 0% beat 18 months at 12%, even after the $300 fee.

How does a balance transfer fee work?

It is added to the new balance at once — 3% on $10,000 is $300, so you owe $10,300 on the new card. Typical fees run 3% to 5% of the amount transferred.

What happens if I do not clear the balance before the intro ends?

Everything left pays the post-intro APR — 24.99% here — until it is gone. That is why the payment is sized to clear the balance inside the window, and why the window length matters more than the post-intro rate.

How long should the 0% intro period be?

At least 8 months on these numbers — below 8 months the loan wins. Typical offers run 12 to 21 months; longer windows leave a smaller balance for the post-intro rate.

What transfer fee would make the loan win?

About 9.03% — $903 on $10,000, triple the typical 3% fee. At 5% the transfer still wins by $405.86.

What loan rate would beat the balance transfer?

About 4.62% APR — far below the 12% loan here. At 8% the transfer still wins by $275.69.

Can I make new purchases on a balance transfer card?

You can, but most cards apply payments to the lowest-rate balance first, so new spending at the regular rate sits unpaid until the transferred balance is gone. Use a separate card for spending during the payoff.

Does a balance transfer hurt my credit score?

Opening a new card can dip the score briefly, and the new limit can help utilization — but approval, limits and score effects depend on the borrower. This calculator prices the payoff, not the credit decision.
