How the comparison works
On the defaults — a $5,000.00 balance, a card at 24.99% APR and a personal loan at 11.00% APR for 36 months — the loan payment is $163.69 a month, the loan costs $892.84 in interest for a total of $5,892.84, while paying the same $163.69 a month against the card takes 50 months, costs $3,028.52 in interest for a total of $8,028.52 — so the loan route costs $2,135.68 less and finishes 14 months sooner: LOAN wins by $2,135.68.
Both routes pay the same fixed amount every month — $163.69 a month — so the comparison is total cost and months, not the payment. The card route does NOT use minimum payments: minimum payments stretch a $5,000 balance over a decade, and this page compares a disciplined fixed payment instead. The loan’s payment is fixed and the loan ends on schedule, while the card’s last payment is smaller because the balance clears mid-month.
The loan wins because its rate is lower: every dollar of the $163.69 payment that is not eaten by interest cuts the balance, and at 11.00% far less is eaten than at 24.99%. A loan may carry an origination fee (not modelled — a 5% fee would add $250 to the loan route at the $5,000 default), and the card’s rate can rise while the loan’s cannot — both would narrow the loan’s lead, but at these defaults neither closes a $2,135.68 gap.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: $5,000.00 balance, card 24.99% APR, loan 11.00% APR, 36 months.
Line 1 — the monthly rates. Monthly card rate = 24.99% ÷ 12 = 2.0825% a month; monthly loan rate = 11.00% ÷ 12 = 0.9167% a month. The card’s first month of interest is $5,000.00 × 0.020825 = $104.13 — the $163.69 payment covers it with $59.56 left over for the balance, so the card balance shrinks from month one.
Line 2 — the loan payment. P = 5000 × 0.0091667 × (1.0091667)^36 ÷ ((1.0091667)^36 − 1) = $163.69 a month, rounded to cents. Loan total = $163.69 × 36 = $5,892.84; loan interest = $5,892.84 − $5,000.00 = $892.84.
Line 3 — the card route, month by month. Pay the same $163.69 every month against the card at 2.0825% a month: each month’s interest is charged on the shrinking balance, the payment covers it, and the balance clears in 50 months. The last payment is only $7.71 — the remaining balance plus that month’s interest — because the balance clears mid-month. Card total = $8,028.52; card interest = $8,028.52 − $5,000.00 = $3,028.52.
Line 4 — the gap and the winner. Gap = $8,028.52 − $5,892.84 = $2,135.68 — LOAN wins by $2,135.68 and finishes 14 months sooner (50 months against the loan’s 36). The default result in full: Loan payment $163.69/mo, loan interest $892.84, loan total $5,892.84; card 50 months, interest $3,028.52, total $8,028.52 — LOAN wins by $2,135.68.
Line 5 — the rounding convention. Rounding convention: every gap on this page is the difference of the displayed totals: each side is rounded to cents first, then subtracted. On these defaults the unrounded gap and the displayed gap agree at $2,135.68, but on other inputs they can differ by a cent, and the page always shows the displayed figure.
Every branch, checked
Balance $10,000: Loan payment $327.39/mo, loan interest $1,786.04, loan total $11,786.04; card 50 months, interest $6,056.67, total $16,056.67 — LOAN wins by $4,270.63. Doubling the balance doubles the payment and nearly doubles the gap — the card route’s extra interest scales with the balance.
Card APR 18%: Loan payment $163.69/mo, loan interest $892.84, loan total $5,892.84; card 42 months, interest $1,737.78, total $6,737.78 — LOAN wins by $844.94. A cheaper card clears 8 months faster and the gap shrinks by $1,290.74 — but the loan still wins, because 18.00% is still well above 11.00%.
Loan rate 8%: Loan payment $156.68/mo, loan interest $640.48, loan total $5,640.48; card 53 months, interest $3,303.71, total $8,303.71 — LOAN wins by $2,663.23. A cheaper loan means a smaller payment, and a smaller payment means the card takes longer — 53 months — so the gap grows even as the loan gets cheaper.
Loan term 24 months: Loan payment $233.04/mo, loan interest $592.96, loan total $5,592.96; card 29 months, interest $1,694.58, total $6,694.58 — LOAN wins by $1,101.62. A shorter term means a bigger payment, and a bigger payment clears the card faster — 29 months — so the gap shrinks to $1,101.62.
Balance $2,000: Loan payment $65.48/mo, loan interest $357.28, loan total $2,357.28; card 50 months, interest $1,211.26, total $3,211.26 — LOAN wins by $853.98. A smaller balance still takes 50 months at the smaller payment — the months depend on the rates and the payment relative to the balance, not on the balance alone.
Card APR 29.99%: Loan payment $163.69/mo, loan interest $892.84, loan total $5,892.84; card 59 months, interest $4,558.27, total $9,558.27 — LOAN wins by $3,665.43. At nearly 30.00% the card takes almost five years and the gap balloons to $3,665.43 — the higher the card rate, the more the loan saves.
The reverses, worked backwards
Loan APR for a TIE: exact 24.99%; displayed 24.99% → loan payment $198.77/mo, loan interest $2,155.72, loan total $7,155.72; card 37 months, interest $2,155.86, total $7,155.86, gap $0.14. This tie is EXACT in the continuous model — the break-even loan APR equals the card APR (24.99%) — and the 14 cents is the cents-rounding of the monthly payment, not a real difference. At 24.98%: Loan payment $198.75/mo, loan interest $2,155.00, loan total $7,155.00; card 37 months, interest $2,156.22, total $7,156.22 — LOAN wins by $1.22. At 25.00%: Loan payment $198.80/mo, loan interest $2,156.80, loan total $7,156.80; card 36 months, interest $2,155.36, total $7,155.36 — CARD wins by $1.44. The star is a PERCENT. This tie is EXACT in the continuous model — the break-even card APR equals the loan APR (11.00%) — and the 15 cents is the cents-rounding of the monthly payment, not a real difference, the same rounding note as the loan-APR tie. At 10.99%: Loan payment $163.69/mo, loan interest $892.84, loan total $5,892.84; card 36 months, interest $891.99, total $5,891.99 — CARD wins by $0.85. Monthly payment to pay the card off in exactly 36 months: exact $198.7726; displayed $198.77 → 37 months. At $198.77: Monthly payment $198.77 clears the card in 37 months — card interest $2,155.86, total $7,155.86. One cent short of the exact payment leaves a few dollars for month 37. At $198.78: Monthly payment $198.78 clears the card in 36 months — card interest $2,155.69, total $7,155.69. The reverse is exact, not a step — the cent is the discrimination, not the value. The star is DOLLARS/MONTH. This reverse is CONTINUOUS.

This reverse is CONTINUOUS.
What the defaults assume
Both routes pay the same fixed amount every month — $163.69 a month — the comparison is total cost and months, not the payment. The card route does NOT use minimum payments (minimum payments stretch a $5,000 balance over a decade — this page compares a disciplined fixed payment). The loan’s payment is fixed and the loan ends on schedule, while the card’s last payment is smaller because the balance clears mid-month. A loan may carry an origination fee (not modelled — a 5% fee would add $250 to the loan route at the $5,000 default). The card’s rate can rise, the loan’s cannot. With a 0.00% card APR (Loan payment $163.69/mo, loan interest $892.84, loan total $5,892.84; card 31 months, interest $0.00, total $5,000.00 — CARD wins by $892.84) the card clears in 31 months — faster than the loan term, because the fixed payment exceeds the balance divided by 36 — and the card wins, a model-level outcome, not an error. With a $0.00 balance (Loan payment $0.00/mo, loan interest $0.00, loan total $0.00; card 0 months, interest $0.00, total $0.00 — TIE) there is no debt and nothing to compare — a TIE, and a model-level outcome, not an error. With a $500.00 balance (Loan payment $16.37/mo, loan interest $89.32, loan total $589.32; card 50 months, interest $302.82, total $802.82 — LOAN wins by $213.50) the loan still wins by $213.50. With a 0.00% loan APR (Loan payment $138.89/mo, loan interest $0.04, loan total $5,000.04; card 68 months, interest $4,333.66, total $9,333.66 — LOAN wins by $4,333.62) the interest is $0.04, not $0.00 — the cents-rounded payment overshoots by 4 cents over 36 months. With a 12-month loan term (Loan payment $441.91/mo, loan interest $302.92, loan total $5,302.92; card 14 months, interest $761.11, total $5,761.11 — LOAN wins by $458.19) the bigger payment clears the card in 14 months. A card APR where the fixed payment no longer covers monthly interest would need a card APR near 99% at the defaults, outside the input range — it cannot occur here, so no “never pays off” state is shown. Rounding convention: every gap on this page is the difference of the displayed totals: each side is rounded to cents first, then subtracted.

Who uses this
- The cardholder with a $5,000.00 balance at 24.99% APR: they learn a personal loan at 11.00% saves them $2,135.68 on the same $163.69 a month — and they check the 18.00% card branch, where the loan still wins by $844.94.
- The borrower offered a loan at 8.00%: they learn the cheaper loan costs only $640.48 in interest — and they check the 24-month term branch, where a bigger payment clears the card in 29 months.
- The borrower with a $2,000.00 balance: they learn the loan still wins by $853.98 even on a small balance — and they check the $500.00 edge, where the loan wins by $213.50.
- The borrower weighing a loan fee: they learn a 5% origination fee would add $250 to the loan route — and they check the tie reverses, where the loan APR would have to reach 24.99% before the card catches up.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is first-principles: the loan payment is the amortization formula P = B × r × (1+r)^n ÷ ((1+r)^n − 1) with r = loan APR ÷ 12, rounded to cents, and the card route is a month-by-month simulation at the card’s monthly rate with the same fixed payment, the last payment smaller than the rest. Every figure is rounded to cents half-up, and every gap is the difference of the displayed totals — each side rounded to cents first, then subtracted. What the model cannot do is predict YOUR rates: the card’s rate can rise after you take the loan decision, the loan’s rate is the one you are offered today, and neither side includes fees — a loan origination fee (a 5% fee adds $250 at the $5,000 default) and any card annual fee are both outside the model. No minimum payments are modelled on the card route — real minimum payments would stretch the card route far past 50 months and widen the loan’s lead. Your credit score, income, and the lender’s terms decide the loan APR you actually get — use this page to compare the two routes on the same numbers, then check the real loan offer, including its fee, before you choose.

Frequently asked questions
What do the defaults give?
LOAN wins by $2,135.68. On a $5,000.00 balance at 24.99% card APR and a personal loan at 11.00% APR for 36 months, the loan payment is $163.69 a month, the loan interest is $892.84 and the loan total is $5,892.84; paying the same $163.69 a month against the card takes 50 months, costs $3,028.52 in interest and totals $8,028.52 — so the loan costs $2,135.68 less and finishes 14 months sooner.
Why does the loan win if both routes pay the same $163.69 a month?
Because the rates are different. Both routes pay $163.69 a month, so the comparison is total cost and months, not the payment. At 24.99% the card eats $104.13 of the first payment in interest, leaving only $59.56 for the balance; at 11.00% the loan’s interest is far smaller, so more of each payment cuts the balance — and the card needs 50 months against the loan’s 36.
What loan APR would make it a tie?
24.99%. At a 24.99% loan APR the gap is $0.14 — the tie is exact in the continuous model, because the break-even loan APR equals the card APR, and the 14 cents is the cents-rounding of the monthly payment, not a real difference. At 24.98% the loan wins by $1.22; at 25.00% the card wins by $1.44.
What card APR would make it a tie?
11.00%. At an 11.00% card APR the gap is $0.15 — the tie is exact in the continuous model, because the break-even card APR equals the loan APR, and the 15 cents is the cents-rounding of the monthly payment. At 10.99% the card wins by $0.85; at 11.01% the loan wins by $1.17.
