Crushed stone — cubic yards, tons & bags

Stone is sold by the cubic yard, but you measure the job in feet and inches. This calculator turns your length, width, and depth into cubic feet, cubic yards, weight in pounds and tons, and 50-lb bags — for crushed stone, pea gravel, river rock, and limestone screenings.

The length of the area to cover, in feet. The default is 10 ft.

The width of the area to cover, in feet. The default is 12 ft.

How deep the stone layer is, in inches. The default is 4 in.

The stone you are buying: crushed stone is 100 lb per cubic foot, pea gravel 96, river rock 104, limestone screenings 110. The default is crushed stone.

How much crushed stone you need

Stone is sold by the cubic yard, but you measure the job in feet and inches, so the work is a unit conversion with one weight step at the end. The volume is the length times the width times the depth, with the depth turned from inches into feet first: 4 in is a third of a foot. A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so the cubic yards are the cubic feet divided by 27. The weight is the volume times the density of the stone you buy: crushed stone is 100 lb per cubic foot, pea gravel 96, river rock 104, and limestone screenings 110. A ton is 2,000 lb, so the tons are the pounds divided by 2,000. Bags are counted in 50-lb bags and always rounded up, because you cannot buy part of a bag and a short load is worse than a spare bag.

At the defaults — 10 ft long, 12 ft wide, 4 in deep, crushed stone — the volume is 40.00 cu ft, which is 1.48 cu yd, the weight is 4,000.00 lb, which is 2.00 tons, and the bags are 80 of 50 lb. The area is 120.00 sq ft.

The worked example, line by line

Setup: length 10 ft, width 12 ft, depth 4 in, crushed stone at 100 lb per cubic foot.

Line 1 — the depth in feet. 4 in ÷ 12 = 0.33 ft (a third of a foot).

Line 2 — the volume. 10 × 12 × 0.33 = 40.00 cu ft.

Line 3 — the cubic yards. 40.00 ÷ 27 = 1.48 cu yd. Stone is sold by the cubic yard, so order 1.5 or 2 cu yd rather than 1.48 — yards are sold in whole or half yards, and a short load costs more in a second delivery than a little extra stone.

Line 4 — the weight. 40.00 × 100 = 4,000.00 lb.

Line 5 — the tons. 4,000.00 ÷ 2,000 = 2.00 tons.

Line 6 — the bags. 4,000.00 ÷ 50 = 80 bags of 50 lb, exactly — no rounding needed here.

Reverse: 3 tons of crushed stone over a 10 × 12 ft area needs 6.00 in of depth (3 tons is 6,000 lb, which is 60 cu ft, over 120 sq ft). And 2 tons at 4 in deep covers 120.00 sq ft (2 tons is 4,000 lb, which is 40 cu ft, at a third of a foot deep).

Every branch, checked

20 × 15 ft, 6 in, crushed stone: the volume is 150.00 cu ft, which is 5.56 cu yd, the weight is 15,000.00 lb, which is 7.50 tons, and the bags are 300. Doubling the depth and widening the area nearly quadruples the stone: volume grows with all three dimensions at once.

Pea gravel: the same 10 × 12 ft at 4 in is still 40.00 cu ft and 1.48 cu yd — the volume does not depend on the stone — but the weight is 3,840.00 lb, which is 1.92 tons, and the bags are 77 (76.8 rounded up). Lighter stone, same hole.

River rock: the volume is still 40.00 cu ft and 1.48 cu yd, the weight is 4,160.00 lb, which is 2.08 tons, and the bags are 84 (83.2 rounded up). River rock is the heaviest of the common decorative stones here.

Limestone screenings: the volume is still 40.00 cu ft and 1.48 cu yd, the weight is 4,400.00 lb, which is 2.20 tons, and the bags are 88 exactly. Screenings pack the tightest, so they weigh the most per cubic foot.

8 × 8 ft, 2 in, crushed stone: the volume is 10.67 cu ft, which is 0.40 cu yd, the weight is 1,066.67 lb, which is 0.53 tons, and the bags are 22 (21.33 rounded up). A thin top-dressing layer still weighs over half a ton: stone is heavy even in small amounts.

30 × 20 ft, 6 in, crushed stone: the volume is 300.00 cu ft, which is 11.11 cu yd, the weight is 30,000.00 lb, which is 15.00 tons, and the bags are 600. At this size, order by the truckload, not by the bag: 600 bags is a pallet and a half of lifting.

Reverse — the other way round: 3 tons over 10 × 12 ft needs 6.00 in of depth, and 2 tons at 4 in deep covers 120.00 sq ft. One cubic yard of crushed stone is 2,700.00 lb, which is 1.35 tons; one cubic yard of pea gravel is 2,592.00 lb, which is 1.30 tons.

What the defaults assume

The model assumes the area is a plain rectangle, the depth is the same everywhere, and the densities are the standard ones: crushed stone 100 lb per cubic foot, pea gravel 96, river rock 104, limestone screenings 110. It assumes the stone is dry and loose; wet stone weighs more, and compacted stone takes up less volume for the same weight, so a compacted base needs more stone than the loose volume suggests. It does not allow for waste, spillage, or uneven ground: most yards suggest adding 5–10% on top. With any dimension at zero or below, the calculator asks for a positive number instead of showing a result. Rounding convention: cubic feet, cubic yards, pounds, and tons are shown to two decimals, and bags are always whole numbers rounded up — so a figure worked out from the rounded numbers can differ by a few hundredths from the figure shown, and the bag count is always the ceiling, never the nearest whole number.

Who uses this

  • The homeowner topping up a 10 × 12 ft patio base: they learn 4 in of crushed stone is 40.00 cu ft, or 1.48 cu yd — so they know to order 2 cu yd rather than 1.48, and they check the 3-ton depth reverse (6.00 in) before deciding whether the truckload they already have is enough.
  • The landscaper pricing a 20 × 15 ft driveway at 6 in: they learn it takes 150.00 cu ft, or 5.56 cu yd, at 15,000.00 lb — so they know it is a 7.50-ton delivery, and they check the 30 × 20 ft branch (11.11 cu yd, 15.00 tons) before quoting the bigger job by the bag.
  • The gardener choosing between pea gravel and river rock: they learn the same hole takes 3,840.00 lb of pea gravel but 4,160.00 lb of river rock — so they know the volume is the same and only the weight changes, and they check the bag counts (77 vs 84) before loading the car.
  • The DIYer doing a thin 2 in top-dressing on an 8 × 8 ft patch: they learn it still weighs 1,066.67 lb — so they know it is 22 bags, not a handful, and they check the 50-lb bag count before trying to carry it all in one trip.

Accuracy & limitations

The math is exact for the numbers you enter: the volume is the length times the width times the depth in feet, the cubic yards are the cubic feet divided by 27, the weight is the volume times the density, the tons are the pounds divided by 2,000, and the bags are the pounds divided by 50 and rounded up. What the model cannot do is know your real stone: check the density, because suppliers vary — crushed stone is usually 100 lb per cubic foot, but a wet or dusty load weighs more — and check the depth, because a base that gets compacted settles thinner than the loose depth you measured. It assumes a plain rectangle with even depth and dry, loose stone, and it leaves out waste, spillage, and uneven ground: add 5–10% on top for a real job. For a concrete pour the same shape, see concrete calculator; for the cost of the stone, see gravel cost calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How much crushed stone do I need for a 10 by 12 foot area?

40.00 cu ft at 4 in deep — 1.48 cu yd, 4,000.00 lb, 2.00 tons, 80 bags of 50 lb. Order 2 cu yd rather than 1.48: yards are sold in whole or half yards, and a short load costs more in a second delivery than a little extra stone.

How many tons is a cubic yard of crushed stone?

1.35 tons. One cubic yard of crushed stone is 2,700.00 lb, and a ton is 2,000 lb. One cubic yard of pea gravel is lighter: 2,592.00 lb, or 1.30 tons.

How do I calculate crushed stone for a driveway?

Length times width times depth, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. A 20 × 15 ft driveway at 6 in deep is 150.00 cu ft, or 5.56 cu yd, at 15,000.00 lb (7.50 tons). A 30 × 20 ft driveway at 6 in is 300.00 cu ft, or 11.11 cu yd, at 30,000.00 lb (15.00 tons).

How many 50-lb bags of crushed stone do I need?

Divide the pounds by 50 and round up. A 10 × 12 ft area at 4 in deep is 4,000.00 lb, so 80 bags exactly. Pea gravel for the same area is 3,840.00 lb, so 77 bags (76.8 rounded up); river rock is 4,160.00 lb, so 84 bags.

How deep should crushed stone be?

4 in is the usual base for a patio or path; 6 in for a driveway. A 10 × 12 ft area at 6 in deep takes 60 cu ft, or 2.22 cu yd — and 3 tons of crushed stone over that area gives exactly 6.00 in of depth.

Does the stone type change how much I need?

It changes the weight, not the volume. The same 10 × 12 ft hole at 4 in is always 40.00 cu ft and 1.48 cu yd, but it weighs 3,840.00 lb of pea gravel, 4,000.00 lb of crushed stone, 4,160.00 lb of river rock, or 4,400.00 lb of limestone screenings.
