On the defaults — a $75.00 monthly transit pass plus 10 extra rides a month at $2.50 each — your commuting allowance totals $100.00 a month and $1,200.00 for the year. This is the COMMUTING version — a transit pass plus paid extra rides priced monthly — the wellness-allowance-calculator page is the WELLNESS version — a wellness app plus paid sessions priced monthly; the phone-allowance-calculator page is the PHONE version — a service plan plus a device instalment priced monthly; the internet-allowance-calculator page is the INTERNET version — a service plan plus a router rental priced monthly; and the how-to-calculate-commuting-allowance guide is the METHOD version — the same $75.00 pass plus 10 rides at $2.50 worked step by step.
Put your monthly transit pass, extra rides per month and price per extra ride in: $75.00 pass plus 10 rides at $2.50 total $100.00 a month, $1,200.00 over 12 months.
It means that getting to work costs $75.00 for the pass plus $25.00 for extra rides — 10 rides at $2.50 each — $100.00 in all, every month, and $1,200.00 over 12 months, split $900.00 pass and $300.00 rides. The two lines are the whole story in miniature: the pass line is a flat fare that continues whether you take extra rides or not, while the rides line scales with how often you actually travel beyond the pass. The part people get wrong is pricing commuting as the pass alone: a $75.00 pass with 10 extra rides is $100.00 a month, not $75.00, and an allowance built on the pass alone understates the total by $300.00 over a year. The other part people get wrong is the reverse — counting rides that are already covered by the pass as paid rides, which overstates the total by $2.50 for every covered ride counted.
Is $75.00 really the pass, or the pass plus rides? Seventy-five dollars is the recurring base fare, and it is the figure the pass line turns on: the $100.00-pass branch totals $125.00 a month against the $100.00 headline, so a $25.00 pass difference is $25.00 a month and $300.00 over 12 months. If the pass bundles airport trips, express surcharges, or a partner-city add-on, decide whether each belongs in the allowance before typing it in — a personal add-on priced into a work allowance inflates every month it runs.
Do your extra rides really cost $2.50 each? Two dollars fifty is the per-ride fare, and it is the figure the rides line turns on: the $3.50-per-ride branch totals $110.00 a month against the $100.00 headline, so a $1.00 fare difference is $10.00 a month over 10 rides. If some of your rides are covered by the pass, they belong at $0.00, not $2.50 — count only the rides you actually pay for individually, and check the count against trips taken rather than trips planned.
Are 10 extra rides a month your real habit? Ten rides is the monthly count, and it is the figure the rides total turns on: the 15-ride branch totals $112.50 a month against the $100.00 headline, so five extra rides are $12.50 a month and $150.00 over a year. Commuting varies by month, so average three honest months rather than taking your busiest month — a conference month priced as a year-round habit overstates the allowance by exactly the conference trips.
On the defaults: $75.00 monthly transit pass, 10 extra rides a month, $2.50 per extra ride.
And the other way: the pass behind $100.00 a month is $75.00, the ride price behind $100.00 a month is $2.50, and the rides behind $1,200.00 a year are 10. With 0 extra rides the model honestly shows $75.00 a month, because a pass-only habit leaves only the pass line — an edge that shows the ride count is entered independently of the pass.
The defaults are a $75.00 monthly transit pass, 10 extra rides a month at $2.50 each, so the headline is one commuter for one year with a mid-priced pass and a steady extra-ride habit. The model is a multiplication and two additions: the rides line is extra rides times the price per extra ride, the monthly figure is pass plus that rides line, and the total is the monthly figure times 12. The pass reverse is checked at $5.00 either side, because $5.00 a month is $60.00 over 12 months; the price reverse is checked at $0.50 either side, because $0.50 over 10 rides is $5.00 a month; the rides reverse is checked at 1 ride either side, because 1 ride at $2.50 is $2.50 a month. The model does not include parking, tolls, or employer reimbursement caps — price those separately, and read the guide for the averaging method.
| Output | Formula | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Extra rides total per month | extra rides × price per extra ride | $25.00 — 10 × $2.50. |
| Total per month | monthly transit pass + extra rides × price per extra ride | $100.00 — $75.00 + $25.00. |
| Total commuting allowance | (monthly transit pass + extra rides × price per extra ride) × 12 | $1,200.00 — $100.00 × 12. |
| Pass total | monthly transit pass × 12 | $900.00 — $75.00 × 12. |
| Extra rides total | extra rides × price per extra ride × 12 | $300.00 — 10 × $2.50 × 12. |
| Pass behind a target monthly total | target monthly total − extra rides × price per extra ride | $75.00 — $100.00 − $25.00. |
| Ride price behind a target monthly total | (target monthly total − monthly transit pass) ÷ extra rides | $2.50 — ($100.00 − $75.00) ÷ 10. |
| Rides behind a target yearly total | (target yearly total ÷ 12 − monthly transit pass) ÷ price per extra ride | 10 rides — ($1,200.00 ÷ 12 − $75.00) ÷ $2.50. |
| Pass as a share of the monthly total | monthly transit pass ÷ total per month | 75.00% — $75.00 ÷ $100.00, the pass is three quarters of the total. |

Figures are the model’s own arithmetic on the numbers you type, computed from unrounded values and displayed rounded HALF_UP to 2dp. The main limitation is the inputs, not the arithmetic: whether the pass figure is the base fare alone or a bundle, whether every counted ride really carries a charge, and whether the ride count is an honest average are all judgement calls, and this page prices the figures you enter without checking them. This page is a calculation tool, not payroll or tax advice.
Monthly transit pass $75.00 plus 10 extra rides at $2.50 total $100.00 a month: $1,200.00 a year, $900.00 pass plus $300.00 rides. Source: Bright Side Kit, https://brightoolbox.com/commuting-allowance-calculator/, accessed 29 October 2026.
The recurring base fare for the pass: the plan rate as billed each month. Extra rides are not part of the pass — they have their own line — and one-off charges such as a card fee belong in the month they are charged, not spread across the pass.
Enter 0 extra rides, or a $0.00 price per extra ride, and the total is the pass alone: $75.00 a month and $900.00 over 12 months on these defaults. A covered ride makes its rides line $0.00 by definition, and that is the honest edge, not a missing input.
Only if they are charged monthly like a pass and belong in the allowance being claimed: price them as a separate line if they need to be shown apart. Parking paid per day or tolls paid per trip are usage costs, not monthly pass charges, and belong in the month they were paid.
Because the pass and the ride count are both monthly figures: $100.00 a month times 12 months is $1,200.00. A weekly ride count would need converting to a monthly count first — roughly 4.33 weeks a month — and mixing weekly and monthly figures in one multiplication is the fastest way to misstate the year.
Neither, in the tax sense: this page computes an allowance figure before any tax treatment, because whether an allowance is taxable depends on the jurisdiction, the employer policy and how the allowance is paid, not on the arithmetic. The guide carries the general tax note, and it is general information only, not tax advice.
A commuting allowance is tied to a monthly transit pass plus paid extra rides, while a wellness allowance is tied to a monthly app plus paid sessions. The two are priced the same way, a recurring line plus a usage line, but the usage line is rides taken for one and sessions booked for the other, which is why the two pages treat the second line with different examples.
