On the defaults — a $55.00 monthly plan plus a $30.00 monthly device payment over 12 months — your phone allowance totals $85.00 a month and $1,020.00 for the year. This is the PHONE version — a service plan plus a device instalment priced monthly — the parking-allowance-calculator page is the PARKING version — workdays priced daily plus a monthly fee; the laundry-allowance-calculator page is the LAUNDRY version — loads priced weekly plus monthly supplies; and the how-to-calculate-phone-allowance guide is the METHOD version — the same $55.00 plan plus $30.00 device worked step by step.
Put your monthly plan, device payment and months in: $55.00 plan plus $30.00 device total $85.00 a month, $1,020.00 over 12 months.
It means that keeping one phone line running costs $55.00 for the service plan plus $30.00 for the handset instalment, $85.00 in all, every month — and $1,020.00 over 12 months, split $660.00 plan and $360.00 device. The two lines are the whole story in miniature: the plan line is a recurring service charge that continues as long as the line is live, while the device line is a finite instalment that ends when the handset is paid off. The part people get wrong is adding the full handset price to a single month: a $720.00 phone paid over 24 months is $30.00 a month, not $720.00 in month one, and pricing it any other way wrecks the monthly figure. The other part people get wrong is forgetting the device line entirely once the handset feels free — while the instalment still runs, it is $30.00 a month of real cost, and an allowance that omits it understates the total by more than a third.
Is $55.00 really the plan, or the plan plus extras? Fifty-five dollars is the recurring service charge, and it is the figure the plan line turns on: the $75.00-plan branch totals $105.00 a month against the $85.00 headline, so a $20.00 plan difference is $20.00 a month and $240.00 over 12 months. If the bill bundles insurance, a tablet line, or a streaming perk, decide whether each belongs in a work phone allowance before typing it in — a personal add-on priced into a work allowance inflates every month it runs.
Is the device payment still running? Thirty dollars a month is the handset instalment, and it is the figure the device line turns on: the $0-device branch totals $55.00 a month against the $85.00 headline, so a paid-off handset is $30.00 a month cheaper than one still on instalments. If the handset is paid off mid-period, the honest figure is two stretches — months with the instalment and months without — not a single blended average that hides the change.
Does the month count match the contract? Twelve months is the period on the defaults, and it is the figure the yearly total turns on: the 24-month branch keeps $85.00 a month but doubles the total to $2,040.00, so a wrong month count leaves the monthly figure untouched while wrecking the total. If the allowance is claimed for a part-year, or the contract renews mid-year at a new plan price, split the period and price each stretch separately rather than stretching one monthly figure over months it never applied to.
On the defaults: $55.00 monthly plan, $30.00 monthly device payment, 12 months.
And the other way: the plan behind $85.00 a month is $55.00, the device payment behind $85.00 a month is $30.00, and the months behind $1,020.00 are 12. With a $0 device payment the model honestly shows $55.00 a month, because a paid-off handset leaves only the plan line — an edge that shows the device figure is entered independently of the plan.
The defaults are a $55.00 monthly plan, a $30.00 monthly device payment and 12 months, so the headline is one phone line for one year with a handset still on instalments. The model is an addition and a multiplication: the monthly figure is plan plus device, and the total is that monthly figure times the months. The plan and device reverses are checked at $5.00 either side, because $5.00 a month is $60.00 over 12 months; the months reverse is checked at 1 month either side, because 1 month at $85.00 is $85.00. The model does not include taxes and fees on the bill, insurance, accessories, a second line, or employer reimbursement caps — price those separately, and read the guide for the part-year method.

Figures are the model’s own arithmetic on the numbers you type, computed from unrounded values and displayed rounded HALF_UP to 2dp. The main limitation is the inputs, not the arithmetic: whether the plan figure is the service charge alone or a bundle, whether the device instalment is still running, and whether the month count matches the contract are all judgement calls, and this page prices the figures you enter without checking them. This page is a calculation tool, not payroll or tax advice.
Monthly plan $55.00 plus device payment $30.00 total $85.00 a month: $1,020.00 a year, $660.00 plan plus $360.00 device. Source: Bright Side Kit, https://brightoolbox.com/phone-allowance-calculator/, accessed 29 October 2026.
The recurring service charge for the line: calls, texts and data at the contracted rate. A handset instalment is not part of the plan — it has its own line — and one-off charges such as an activation fee belong in the month they are charged, not spread across the plan.
Enter $0.00 for the device payment and the total is the plan alone: $55.00 a month and $660.00 over 12 months on these defaults. A paid-off handset makes the device line $0.00 by definition, and that is the honest edge, not a missing input.
No: enter the monthly instalment, not the purchase price. A $720.00 handset over 24 months is $30.00 a month; entering $720.00 as a monthly device payment would overstate the monthly total by $690.00 and the yearly total by $8,280.00.
Because the monthly figure is plan plus device, independent of how many months you count, while the total is that monthly figure times the months. Doubling the months doubles the total and leaves the monthly figure exactly where it was.
Neither, in the tax sense: this page computes an allowance figure before any tax treatment, because whether an allowance is taxable depends on the jurisdiction, the employer policy and how the allowance is paid, not on the arithmetic. The guide carries the general tax note, and it is general information only, not tax advice.
A phone allowance is tied to a monthly service charge plus a device instalment, while a transit allowance is tied to a monthly pass plus per-trip fares. The two are priced the same way, a recurring line plus a usage or instalment line, but the second line is a handset payment for phones and trips for transit, which is why the two pages use different multipliers.
