Birch Mulch Chart: 1100 Sq Ft at 2 Inches, Order 8 Yards

On the defaults — 1100 square feet at a 2-inch depth with 10% waste — birch mulch needs 1210.00 square feet of coverage, which is 7.47 cubic yards exact, so order 8 cubic yards. This is reference table #482 — the birch version of the mulch chart, with a calculator on top and a 16-row lookup table below, following the stone-mulch-chart page, the wood-chip-mulch-chart page, the bamboo-mulch-chart page, and the cocoa-mulch-chart page.

Put your birch mulch area, depth and waste in: 1100 sq ft at 2-inch depth with 10% waste needs 1210.00 sq ft — 7.47 cubic yards exact, order 8.

How big the area to mulch with birch mulch is in square feet — 1100 on the defaults. Measure the beds and borders you will actually cover, not the whole garden: lawn and bare soil need no birch mulch.

How deep the birch mulch layer is in inches — 2 on the defaults. Birch mulch is a pale, decorative mulch laid at a shallow depth for beds, where light chips brighten shade, suppress weeds, and break down slowly.

Extra allowance for settling, spreading loss and uneven ground, in percent — 10 on the defaults. Birch chips settle moderately, so 10% is a comfortable allowance; use more on open or sloped ground.

Birch mulch (1100 sq ft, 2 inches, 10% waste)7.47 cubic yards exact — order 8 cubic yards.1100 sq ft × 1.10 = 1210.00 sq ft needed; 1210.00 × 2 ÷ 324 = 7.47 cubic yards exact — order 8 cubic yards. One cubic yard covers 324 square feet at 1 inch of depth, so depth divides that coverage: 162.0 square feet per yard at 2 inches.

What does 7.47 cubic yards of birch mulch mean?

It means 1210.00 square feet of ground — the 1100 square feet you measured plus 10% waste — covered 2 inches deep in birch mulch. One cubic yard covers 324 square feet at 1 inch, so at 2 inches each yard covers 162.0 square feet, and 1210.00 divided by 162.0 is 7.47 yards. You cannot order 0.47 of a yard from a bulk supplier in practice, so the order rounds up to 8: the extra 0.53 of a yard is topping-up, not waste, because chips settle into the gaps between pieces as they bed in.

Three things to check before you trust the number

First, measure only the beds the birch will actually cover: paths, lawn and bare soil inside your measurement inflate the order by their full area times depth. Second, pick the depth for birch, not for bark: pale birch chips are decorative and light, so 2 inches brightens a bed without burying it, and copying a deep bark depth overstates the order. Third, keep the waste allowance honest on slopes and open ground: birch chips are light, wind moves them before they bed in, and a flat-ground 10% can run short on an exposed bank.

Worked example

Area 1100 square feet, depth 2 inches, waste 10%. Needed area: 1100 × 1.10 = 1210.00 square feet. Exact yards: 1210.00 × 2 ÷ 324 = 7.47 cubic yards. Order: 8 cubic yards. At 3 inches instead, the same area needs 11.20 yards exact — order 12 — because one more inch across 1210.00 square feet is 1210.00 ÷ 324 = 3.73 extra yards. Depth is the lever that moves this chart fastest.

Birch mulch lookup table

Every row below is the same formula at 10% waste: needed area is area × 1.10, exact cubic yards are needed area × depth ÷ 324, and the order is the exact figure rounded up. Rows vary in both area and depth, so a shallow small bed and a deep large one can both be read off directly. Find your row, or use the calculator above for any size the table does not list.

Every branch, checked

At 0% waste, 1100 square feet at 2 inches needs 6.79 yards exact — order 7. At 3 inches with 10% waste, the same area needs 11.20 yards exact — order 12. At 1300 square feet with 2 inches and 10% waste, the order is 8.83 yards exact — order 9. At 900 square feet with 2 inches and 10% waste, the order is 6.11 yards exact — order 7. Each branch changes exactly one input, so the difference from 7.47 isolates that input.

The reverses, worked backwards

The area behind 7.47 yards is 1100 square feet: at 1000 square feet the figures are 6.79 yards exact — order 7, and at 1200 square feet they are 8.15 yards exact — order 9. The depth behind 7.47 yards is 2 inches: at 1 inch the figures are 3.73 yards exact — order 4, and at 3 inches they are 11.20 yards exact — order 12. The waste behind 7.47 yards is 10%: at 5% the figures are 7.13 yards exact — order 8, and at 15% they are 7.81 yards exact — order 8 — waste moves the exact figure here, changing the order at neither neighbor.

What the defaults assume

The defaults assume a flat 1100 square feet, a uniform 2-inch layer, and a 10% waste allowance. Real beds are not uniform: edges thin out, the ground underneath undulates, and chips poured thick in the middle and thin at the edges average out only roughly. Zero square feet is the honest edge: 0.00 yards exact, order 0. Negative area, zero depth and negative waste are rejected — none of them describes a bed you can mulch. Re-measure after the first barrow loads if the pile looks wrong: catching a measurement error early beats ordering a second delivery.

Who uses this

A home gardener mulching beds with birch for the first time: the table gives the order without doing the 324 division by hand. A landscaper quoting a birch job: the calculator prices the job from the measured beds, and the waste line is the visible allowance the client can see. A nursery manager topping up display beds: pale birch brightens shaded displays, so the order is a presentation decision as much as a covering one. A community garden coordinator splitting a bulk delivery: the table lets each plot read its share off the same chart.

Accuracy & limitations

The arithmetic is exact for the inputs entered; the judgement is in the inputs. An area that includes paths, a depth guessed instead of measured, or a waste allowance copied from a different mulch will each move the answer by exactly the amount of the error. The model does not include compaction after heavy rain, wind loss on exposed ground, or the volume already on the bed from a previous mulch layer — measure the new layer only, and re-check the depth with a ruler in several spots after spreading. This page is a calculation tool, not landscaping advice.

Frequently asked questions

Why divide by 324?

Because one cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, and one inch of depth over one square foot is 1/12 of a cubic foot — so a yard covers 27 × 12 = 324 square feet at 1 inch deep. At 2 inches, divide 324 by 2: each yard covers 162.0 square feet.

Why order 8 yards when the exact figure is 7.47?

Bulk mulch is ordered in whole yards, and rounding down would leave part of the bed uncovered. The extra 0.53 of a yard beds into the gaps between chips and tops up thin spots, so the round-up is useful material, not over-ordering.

Is 10% waste right for birch mulch?

It is a comfortable default: birch chips settle moderately but are light enough to shift before they bed in. Use more on slopes, open ground, or beds with many edges, and less on flat, sheltered beds you can spread carefully.

Should I measure the whole garden or just the beds?

Just the beds the birch will cover. Lawn, paths and bare soil need no mulch, and every square foot wrongly included adds depth ÷ 324 yards to the order — at 2 inches, about 0.006 yards per square foot, which adds up across a garden.

How is birch mulch different from bark mulch for ordering?

The formula is identical; only the depth choice and the look differ. Pale birch chips brighten shade and read as decoration, so a shallow 2-inch birch layer does work a deeper bark layer would do — do not copy a bark depth without thinking about what the birch layer actually needs to do.

What if my bed is an irregular shape?

Split it into rectangles and triangles, measure each, and add the areas. A rough single measurement of an irregular bed is the commonest cause of a short order — two careful rectangles beat one guessed outline.
