How yoga and pilates costs compare
The yearly cost of a class habit is the price per class times the classes a week times the weeks a year. The monthly cost is the yearly cost divided by 12, and the classes a year are the classes a week times the weeks. The winner is the lower yearly cost, and the gap is the difference between the two yearly costs. The per-class gap is the pilates price minus the yoga price, and the price multiple is the pilates price divided by the yoga price. This compares the two on drop-in class cost only: it does not score which is better exercise, and it leaves out memberships, packages, and equipment.
At the defaults — yoga $22 a class, 3 classes a week, pilates $38 a class, 2 classes a week, 52 weeks — yoga costs $22 × 3 × 52 = $3,432.00 a year ($286.00 a month, 156 classes), and pilates costs $38 × 2 × 52 = $3,952.00 a year ($329.33 a month, 104 classes), so yoga wins by $520.00 a year ($43.33 a month). Per class, pilates is $16.00 more, which is 1.73× the yoga price.
| Case | Yoga /yr | Pilates /yr | Winner | Gap /yr |
|---|
| Default ($22 × 3/wk, $38 × 2/wk, 52 wks) | $3,432.00 | $3,952.00 | Yoga wins | $520.00 |
| Yoga 2 classes a week | $2,288.00 | $3,952.00 | Yoga wins | $1,664.00 |
| Yoga 4 classes a week | $4,576.00 | $3,952.00 | Pilates wins | $624.00 |
| Pilates 3 classes a week | $3,432.00 | $5,928.00 | Yoga wins | $2,496.00 |
| Pilates $30 a class | $3,432.00 | $3,120.00 | Pilates wins | $312.00 |

| Yoga $25 a class | $3,900.00 | $3,952.00 | Yoga wins | $52.00 |
| Pilates 1 class a week | $3,432.00 | $1,976.00 | Pilates wins | $1,456.00 |
The worked example, line by line
Setup: yoga $22 a class, 3 classes a week, pilates $38 a class, 2 classes a week, 52 weeks.
Line 1 — the yoga cost. $22 × 3 × 52 = $3,432.00 a year, which is $3,432.00 ÷ 12 = $286.00 a month, for 3 × 52 = 156 classes a year.
Line 2 — the pilates cost. $38 × 2 × 52 = $3,952.00 a year, which is $3,952.00 ÷ 12 = $329.33 a month, for 2 × 52 = 104 classes a year.
Line 3 — the gap. $3,952.00 − $3,432.00 = $520.00 a year, which is $43.33 a month, so yoga wins.
Line 4 — the per-class gap. $38.00 − $22.00 = $16.00 more per pilates class, and $38.00 ÷ $22.00 = 1.73× the yoga price.
Reverse: the break-even pilates price is $33.00 a class (exact); the break-even yoga price is $25.33 a class (exact 25.3333 — forward check: $25.33 × 3 × 52 = $3,951.48, which is $0.52 short of a tie); the break-even pilates frequency is 1.74 classes a week (exact 1.7368); the break-even yoga frequency is 3.45 classes a week (exact 3.4545); and there is no weeks break-even, because the gap scales with weeks — at 0 weeks both cost $0.
Every branch, checked
Yoga 2 classes a week: yoga costs $2,288.00 a year and pilates costs $3,952.00, so yoga wins by $1,664.00. Going once less a week saves $1,144.00 a year on yoga.
Yoga 4 classes a week: yoga costs $4,576.00 a year and pilates costs $3,952.00, so pilates wins by $624.00 — the winner FLIPS. The cheaper class is not the cheaper year once you go often enough.
Pilates 3 classes a week: pilates costs $5,928.00 a year and yoga costs $3,432.00, so yoga wins by $2,496.00. One more pilates class a week adds $1,976.00 a year.
Pilates $30 a class: pilates costs $3,120.00 a year and yoga costs $3,432.00, so pilates wins by $312.00 — the winner FLIPS. An $8 cheaper pilates class is enough to win the year.
Yoga $15 a class: yoga costs $2,340.00 a year and pilates costs $3,952.00, so yoga wins by $1,612.00. A cheap community yoga class beats pilates by a long way.
Pilates $45 a class: pilates costs $4,680.00 a year and yoga costs $3,432.00, so yoga wins by $1,248.00. A dear pilates class is the dearest year on this page.
26 weeks: yoga costs $1,716.00 and pilates costs $1,976.00, so yoga wins by $260.00 — exactly half the 52-week gap, because the gap scales with weeks.
12 weeks: yoga costs $792.00 and pilates costs $912.00, so yoga wins by $120.00. A 12-week course is the cheapest way to try either one.
Yoga $25 a class: yoga costs $3,900.00 a year and pilates costs $3,952.00, so yoga wins by $52.00 — still yoga, but only just; the flip comes at $25.33 a class.
Pilates 1 class a week: pilates costs $1,976.00 a year and yoga costs $3,432.00, so pilates wins by $1,456.00. Going once a week makes pilates the cheaper year, even at $38 a class.
Reverse — the other way round: the break-even pilates price is $33.00 a class; the break-even yoga price is $25.33 a class; the break-even pilates frequency is 1.74 classes a week; the break-even yoga frequency is 3.45 classes a week; and there is no weeks break-even.
What the defaults assume
The model assumes the prices are drop-in class prices, the same price every week, and the same number of classes every week for the weeks you enter. It assumes no memberships, no class packages, and no equipment: a monthly membership or a 10-class pack can make the dearer class cheaper than the drop-in price shown here, so check the studio’s actual prices. It assumes class prices vary by studio and city — $22 and $38 are typical drop-in prices, not quotes. It assumes the weeks are attended weeks, not calendar weeks, so a holiday break is weeks you do not count. With 0 weeks both cost $0.00 and it is a tie. With equal prices and equal frequencies both cost $3,432.00 and it is a tie. With a yoga price of $0 yoga costs $0.00 and wins by $3,952.00. With pilates at 0 classes a week pilates costs $0.00 and wins by $3,432.00. Rounding convention: all figures are computed from unrounded values and rounded only for display — money to cents, prices to two decimals, frequencies to two decimals with the exact value to four.

Who uses this
- The studio-goer choosing between yoga 3 times a week and pilates twice a week: they learn yoga costs $3,432.00 a year and pilates costs $3,952.00 — so they know yoga wins by $520.00 a year, and they check the $286.00 a month of yoga before joining.
- The pilates fan going 3 times a week: they learn pilates costs $5,928.00 a year against yoga’s $3,432.00 — so they know the gap is $2,496.00 a year, and they check the $33.00 break-even pilates price before booking the third class.
- The budget watcher offered pilates at $30 a class: they learn pilates costs $3,120.00 a year and wins by $312.00 — so they know the cheaper pilates class flips the year, and they check the $25.33 break-even yoga price before paying $22 a class.
- The yoga devotee going 4 times a week: they learn yoga costs $4,576.00 a year and pilates wins by $624.00 — so they know going often enough flips the winner, and they check the 3.45 break-even yoga frequency before adding the fourth class.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is exact for the numbers you enter: the yearly cost is the price per class times the classes a week times the weeks, the monthly cost is the yearly cost divided by 12, and the winner is the lower yearly cost. What the model cannot do is know your real prices: check the studio, because class prices vary by studio and city, and the price you see today is not the price you will pay in 6 months. It assumes drop-in class prices and the same number of classes every week: a monthly membership or a 10-class pack can make the dearer class cheaper than the drop-in price shown here. It leaves out equipment — a yoga mat is cheap and a reformer class needs the studio’s machine — and it leaves out travel time and parking. It compares cost only, not which is better exercise: yoga and pilates work different muscles, and the right one is the one you keep going to. For the cost of getting to the studio, see gym membership vs home gym; for how many calories a class burns, see calories burned walking.
