Winter sock cost calculator
Packs, pairs per pack and price per pack — the pair count and total follow from them.

On the defaults — 4 packs, 3 pairs per pack, $12.00 a pack — winter socks cost $48.00 in all, $4.00 a pair. Change any figure and the pair count, total and per-pair price update at once, so a bigger drawer never catches the socks short.
Packs, pairs per pack and price per pack — the pair count and total follow from them.
It means four packs of socks, three pairs to a pack, give twelve pairs for forty-eight dollars — four dollars a pair, twelve dollars a pack, all in. The pack count sets the scale, the pairs per pack set how far each pack goes, and the pack price sets the total: buy packs of six instead of three and the same four packs give twenty-four pairs for the same forty-eight dollars, while packs of two give only eight pairs for the same money. The only judgement is the pairs per pack itself — read it off the pack label, since a pack that looks the same on the shelf can hold three pairs or six, and that difference alone doubles or halves the drawer.
| Output | Formula | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Total pairs | packs × pairs per pack | 12 pairs — 4 × 3. |
| Total cost | packs × price per pack | $48.00 — 4 × $12.00. |
| Cost per pair | total cost ÷ total pairs | $4.00 — $48.00 ÷ 12. |
| Cost per pack | price per pack | $12.00 — the price on the pack. |
First, check the pack count against the drawer actually being filled: 4 must be every pack, not just the ones for one person — a forgotten pack is a second trip to the shop. Second, check the pairs per pack against the label actually bought: 3 must be the pairs inside this pack, not the pairs inside a different brand — a pack of six changes the pair count by twelve. Third, check the price per pack against the shelf actually used: $12.00 must be the pack price, not a per-pair price — a per-pair price of $4.00 times four packs gives $16.00, a third of the true total.
4 packs, 3 pairs per pack, $12.00 a pack. Pairs: 4 × 3 = 12. Total: 4 × $12.00 = $48.00. Per pair: $48.00 ÷ 12 = $4.00. In practice that means twelve pairs in the drawer, forty-eight dollars spent, and no surprise when the cold week arrives.
At 6 packs of 3 pairs, the answer moves to 18 pairs for $72.00, still $4.00 a pair. At 2 pairs per pack, the same 4 packs give only 8 pairs for $48.00, which is $6.00 a pair. At $0.00 a pack, the pairs stay 12 and only the total drops to $0.00 — socks from the drawer cost nothing new, whatever the pack price says.
The arithmetic is exact for the inputs entered; the judgement is the pack count actually bought, the pairs actually inside each pack, and the pack price actually charged. Real shops vary with packs that mix sizes or colours, multipacks that discount the per-pair price, and prices that differ by thickness or fibre — so treat $48.00 as the planning figure for 4 packs of 3 pairs at $12.00 a pack, and keep a pack spare for the pair that vanishes in the wash. This is a planning estimate, not a quote from any shop.

Twelve pairs: 4 packs times 3 pairs per pack, for $48.00 at $12.00 a pack.
On the defaults here, $4.00 a pair: $48.00 divided by 12 pairs.
Then 4 packs give 24 pairs for the same $48.00, which is $2.00 a pair.
Then the drawer gets 18 pairs for $72.00, still $4.00 a pair.
Because socks already owned cost nothing new: the pairs stay 12, only the new spending drops to zero.
Yes — one spare pack across a household is cheap insurance against the pair that vanishes in the wash.
