The 60-second rule
Every conversion is one multiplication. The factor is hours-per-unit: minutes ÷ 60, days × 24, weeks × 168, average months × 730.5, 365-day years × 8,760. Default check: 1 day × 24 = 24 hours. The payroll case that built this page: 465 minutes ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours, and 15 minutes = 0.25 hours exactly.

| 1 unit of | = hours | Why this number |
| 1 second | 0.0002778 | 1 ÷ 3,600 — an hour holds 3,600 seconds |
| 1 minute | 0.0166667 | 1 ÷ 60 — the payroll decimal for one minute |
| 1 hour | 1 | The identity — useful as a sanity check |
| 1 day | 24 | Exact by definition of the hour |
| 1 week | 168 | 7 × 24 — exact |
| 1 month | 730.5 | Average month: 365.25 ÷ 12 = 30.4375 days × 24 |
| 1 year | 8,760 | Common year: 365 × 24 (a leap year is 8,784) |
The worked example, line by line
Setup: amount 1, unit days.
Line 1 — the factor. 1 day = 24 hours by definition. Multiplication: 1 × 24 = 24 hours.
Line 2 — the reverse equivalents. 24 hours = 24 ÷ 24 = 1 day, 24 ÷ 168 = 0.1429 weeks, 24 × 60 = 1,440 minutes, 24 ÷ 8,760 = 0.0027 years.
Branch — the 40-hour workweek: 40 hours → 40 hours (identity) = 1.6667 days = 2,400 minutes. The US full-time standard, one multiplication away from everything.
Branch — the 2,080-hour work year: 2,080 hours = 40 × 52 → 86.6667 days = 12.381 weeks = 0.2374 years = 124,800 minutes. Hourly rate × 2,080 is the standard salary conversion.
Branch — the 15-minute payroll increment: 15 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.25 hours. The quarter-hour rounding that most payroll systems use — exact, not approximate.
Branch — the 465-minute flight: 465 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours. Airlines quote minutes; your body feels hours — this is the translation.
Output · formula · meaning
| Output | Formula | What it means |
| Hours | amount × hours-per-unit | 24 hours at the defaults — the amount expressed in the universal unit of billed time. |
| Days equivalent | hours ÷ 24 | 1 day at the defaults — useful for leave balances and PTO math. |
| Weeks equivalent | hours ÷ 168 | 0.1429 weeks at the defaults — project planning thinks in weeks, not minutes. |
| Minutes equivalent | hours × 60 | 1,440 minutes at the defaults — the raw count behind every timestamp. |
Who uses this
- The payroll clerk or small-business owner: converts a 7h 45m shift (465 min) into 7.75 decimal hours — the format every payroll system multiplies by the hourly rate.
- The freelancer billing by the hour: turns 2,080 annual hours into context for a rate quote — a $50/h rate is $104,000 a year, and this page shows where that 2,080 comes from.
- The traveler staring at a 465-minute flight: gets 7.75 hours — 7 hours and 45 minutes of actual seat time, not an abstract number.
- The student or developer normalizing durations: converts weeks, months, years into one unit — hours — so durations from different sources can be added and compared.
Accuracy & limitations
Seconds, minutes, hours, days, and weeks are exact conversions (1 day = 24 h exactly, 1 week = 168 h exactly). Months and years are conventions, not exactness: the month uses the average 30.4375-day month (365.25 ÷ 12), the year uses the common 365-day year. Those two conventions don’t perfectly reconcile — 12 average months = 8,766 h vs the year’s 8,760 h, a 6-hour gap from mixing the 365-day convention with the 365.25-day average. It’s negligible for payroll and planning; don’t use it for orbital mechanics. Results round to 4 decimal places. This page converts durations, not clock times — for hh:mm ↔ decimal time, use the decimal time converter.

- Conventional factors — average month = 365.25/12 = 30.4375 days = 730.5 h; common year = 365 × 24 = 8,760 h; leap year = 366 × 24 = 8,784 h.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours for payroll?
Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.25 hours; 30 minutes = 0.50; 45 minutes = 0.75. So a 7-hour-45-minute shift is 465 minutes ÷ 60 = 7.75 decimal hours — exactly the format payroll software multiplies by your hourly rate. This calculator does it instantly above.
How many hours are in a month?
730.5, on average. The average month is 365.25 ÷ 12 = 30.4375 days, times 24 hours = 730.5 hours. A specific month varies — February is 672 hours (28 × 24), a 31-day month is 744 — but 730.5 is the number for averages, billing rates, and conversions.
How many hours are in a year?
8,760 in a common year. 365 × 24 = 8,760 hours; a leap year has 366 × 24 = 8,784 hours. People sometimes expect 8,766 (365.25 × 24) — that’s the Julian average year, which is what the month factor here is built on, while the year row uses the familiar 365-day convention.
Why don’t 12 average months equal exactly 1 year here?
Two different conventions meet on this page. The month row uses the 365.25-day average (30.4375 days × 24 = 730.5 h), so 12 of them total 8,766 hours; the year row uses the common 365-day year = 8,760 hours. The 6-hour gap is the leap-day average leaking in. For payroll, billing, and planning it doesn’t matter; for astronomy, it does.
How many hours are in a full-time work year?
2,080. 40 hours/week × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours — the US full-time convention behind every hourly-to-salary conversion ($50/h × 2,080 = $104,000/year). It’s 86.6667 days or 12.381 weeks of pure work, holidays and PTO not subtracted.
How is this different from the decimal time converter?
This page converts time units; the decimal time converter converts clock readings. Here you turn 465 minutes into 7.75 hours (a duration). The decimal time converter turns a clock reading like 7:45 into 7.75 — and back. Use this page for durations in any unit, that page for timesheets that read like clocks.
Can I convert hours back into days, weeks, or minutes?
Yes — every result shows the reverse equivalents. Convert 90 hours and you’ll see 3.75 days, 0.5357 weeks, and 5,400 minutes alongside. The tile row always displays hours, days, weeks, and minutes for whatever you entered.
