The standard tent sizes
Tent sizes are rated by how many people fit, snug. The table below lists the standard sizes: floor area, dimensions, peak height, and packed weight, with what each size is best for. Dimensions are typical sizes and vary by brand and model, and floor area is length times width. A bigger tent is not just longer: it is wider, taller, and heavier, and the weight is split between the people who carry it.
| Size | Floor area | Dimensions | Peak height | Packed weight | Best for |
|---|
| 1-person | 18 sq ft | 7 × 2.5 ft | 36 in | 3 lb | solo backpacking |
| 2-person | 30 sq ft | 7.5 × 4 ft | 42 in | 5 lb | two backpackers, one camper with gear |
| 3-person | 42 sq ft | 8 × 5.25 ft | 46 in | 7 lb | two campers plus gear, three snug |
| 4-person | 56 sq ft | 8 × 7 ft | 60 in | 9 lb | family of four, two with room to sit up |
| 6-person | 84 sq ft | 10 × 8.5 ft | 72 in | 14 lb | family of six, four with standing room |
| 8-person | 112 sq ft | 12 × 9.5 ft | 78 in | 19 lb | large family or group, base camp |
How the picks work
The snug pick is the smallest standard size whose rated capacity is at least the number of campers. The comfort pick is one size larger: the standard advice is to size up for gear and elbow room, because rated capacity is a snug fit. When there are 7 or 8 campers the comfort pick is above the chart, because the 8-person tent is the biggest standard size — take two tents or a 10-person tent. The floor area per person is the tent floor area divided by the number of campers, and the packed weight per person is the tent weight divided by the number of campers.
At the default — 4 campers — the snug pick is a 4-person tent with 56 sq ft, which is 14.00 sq ft per person, and 9 lb packed, which is 2.25 lb per person. The comfort pick is a 6-person tent with 84 sq ft, which is 21.00 sq ft per person, and 14 lb packed, which is 3.50 lb per person.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: 4 campers.
Line 1 — the snug pick. The smallest size rated for at least 4 campers is the 4-person tent: 56 sq ft, 8 × 7 ft, peak height 60 in, packed weight 9 lb.
Line 2 — the snug pick per person. 56 ÷ 4 = 14.00 sq ft per person, and 9 ÷ 4 = 2.25 lb per person.
Line 3 — the comfort pick. One size up is the 6-person tent: 84 sq ft, 10 × 8.5 ft, peak height 72 in, packed weight 14 lb.
Line 4 — the comfort pick per person. 84 ÷ 4 = 21.00 sq ft per person, and 14 ÷ 4 = 3.50 lb per person.
Reverse: a 56 sq ft tent fits 4.00 campers at 14 sq ft per person; 6 campers need 84.00 sq ft at 14 sq ft per person, which is a 6-person tent; the packed weight per person is 2.33 lb in a 6-person tent and 2.50 lb in a 2-person tent; and one camper in a 2-person tent gets 30.00 sq ft to themself.
Every group size, checked
1 camper: the snug pick is a 1-person tent with 18 sq ft, which is 18.00 sq ft per person, and 3 lb packed, which is 3.00 lb per person. The comfort pick is a 2-person tent with 30.00 sq ft per person and 5.00 lb per person. A solo backpacker carries the lightest tent and gets the most room per pound.
2 campers: the snug pick is a 2-person tent with 30 sq ft, which is 15.00 sq ft per person, and 5 lb packed, which is 2.50 lb per person. The comfort pick is a 3-person tent with 21.00 sq ft per person and 3.50 lb per person.
3 campers: the snug pick is a 3-person tent with 42 sq ft, which is 14.00 sq ft per person, and 7 lb packed, which is 2.33 lb per person. The comfort pick is a 4-person tent with 18.67 sq ft per person and 3.00 lb per person.
5 campers: the snug pick is a 6-person tent with 84 sq ft, which is 16.80 sq ft per person, and 14 lb packed, which is 2.80 lb per person. The comfort pick is an 8-person tent with 22.40 sq ft per person and 3.80 lb per person. Five campers skip the 4-person tent: it only sleeps four.
6 campers: the snug pick is a 6-person tent with 84 sq ft, which is 14.00 sq ft per person, and 14 lb packed, which is 2.33 lb per person. The comfort pick is an 8-person tent with 18.67 sq ft per person and 3.17 lb per person.
7 campers: the snug pick is an 8-person tent with 112 sq ft, which is 16.00 sq ft per person, and 19 lb packed, which is 2.71 lb per person. The comfort pick is ABOVE CHART: there is no bigger standard size, so take two tents for comfort.
8 campers: the snug pick is an 8-person tent with 112 sq ft, which is 14.00 sq ft per person, and 19 lb packed, which is 2.38 lb per person. The comfort pick is ABOVE CHART: eight people in one tent is the limit of the standard chart.
Reverse — the other way round: a 56 sq ft tent fits 4.00 campers at 14 sq ft per person; 6 campers need 84.00 sq ft at 14 sq ft per person; the packed weight per person is 2.33 lb in a 6-person tent and 2.50 lb in a 2-person tent; and one camper in a 2-person tent gets 30.00 sq ft to themself.
What the chart assumes
The chart assumes the standard rated sizes above, with rated capacity a snug fit: two people in a 2-person tent sleep shoulder to shoulder, with no room for gear. It assumes the floor area is the rated floor area and the packed weight is the tent, poles, and rainfly together. It does not score vestibule space, door count, or how the tent handles wind and rain, and it does not know how much gear you bring: backpacking gear packs small, car-camping gear does not. With 0 campers the calculator asks for at least 1 camper, and with 9 campers the snug pick does not exist — the chart tops out at 8. A note on the numbers: the listed dimensions multiply to 17.5, 30, 42, 56, 85 and 114 sq ft, while the table keeps the standard rated floor areas of 18, 30, 42, 56, 84 and 112 sq ft, and every per-person figure on this page is computed from those rated areas. Rounding convention: all figures are computed from unrounded values and rounded only for display — floor area per person to two decimals, so a figure worked out from the rounded numbers can differ by a few hundredths from the figure shown.

Who uses this
- The family of four planning a car-camping trip: they learn the snug pick is a 4-person tent at 14.00 sq ft each — so they know the 9 lb tent splits to 2.25 lb a person, and they check the 6-person comfort pick at 21.00 sq ft each before squeezing four sleeping bags into 56 sq ft.
- The solo backpacker counting grams: they learn a 1-person tent weighs 3 lb — so they know a 2-person tent costs 2 lb more for 12 sq ft of extra room, and they check the 30.00 sq ft per person before carrying the bigger tent alone.
- The group of seven booking one site: they learn the snug pick is an 8-person tent at 16.00 sq ft each — so they know there is no comfort pick above it, and they check the two-tent option before seven people share 112 sq ft.
- The couple who camp with a dog and two packs: they learn a 2-person tent gives 15.00 sq ft each — so they know the gear will not fit inside, and they check the 3-person comfort pick at 21.00 sq ft each before buying the smaller tent.
Accuracy & limitations
The picks are exact for the numbers you enter: the snug pick is the smallest standard size rated for at least your campers, the comfort pick is one size up, the floor area per person is the rated floor area divided by the campers, and the packed weight per person is the packed weight divided by the campers. What the chart cannot do is know your real tent: check the rated capacity, because brands measure floor area differently and a tent rated for four may be narrower than the 8 × 7 ft shown here. It assumes the standard sizes above; a tent with a big vestibule or a second room sleeps the same number with more usable space. It leaves out vestibules, doors, peak height for sitting up, and weather performance. For other standard sizes in the home, see blanket size chart and bed sheet size chart.
