Why Taipei's date flips against the United States
Taiwan runs on Taipei Time, UTC+8, on every day of the year: noon in Taipei is always 4:00 AM UTC the same day. The United States sits on the other side of the date line's arithmetic, so that same noon is 11:00 PM the previous evening in New York in January and 12:00 AM the same day in July — the one-hour summer shift comes entirely from the American side, because New York springs forward from UTC−5 to UTC−4 while Taipei stays at UTC+8. The same one-hour summer shift moves every other US zone relative to Taipei: Chicago goes from 10:00 PM to 11:00 PM the previous evening at Taipei noon, Denver from 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM, Los Angeles from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and Honolulu stays at 6:00 PM the previous evening in both seasons. Honolulu never moves either, staying at UTC−10, so the Taipei-to-Honolulu gap never changes. This converter reads every offset from the browser's own time-zone data for Asia/Taipei — never from hand-kept tables — so the winter and summer times are computed, not assumed.
The business-hours window, and the one-time rule
The practical consequence of the date flip is the working overlap: a 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM workday in Taipei runs from 8:00 PM the previous day to 5:00 AM Eastern in January, which means there is almost no shared office time at all — the usable window is a Taipei evening against a US morning, or a Taipei early morning against a US late afternoon the day before. Anyone scheduling across the two countries should name the date on both sides of the call, not just the time, because “tomorrow at 10 AM” means different calendar days in Taipei and New York for much of the year. The one-time rule is the reassuring part: the whole island shares it. Taipei in the north and Kaohsiung in the south show the same clock at every moment of the year, with no regional exceptions and no daylight saving anywhere in Taiwan, so one conversion covers the entire island.
Output · formula · meaning
| Output | Formula | What it means |
| UTC time | Taipei time − 8 hours | Noon Taipei = 4:00 AM UTC the same day, all year. |
| New York, January / July | UTC − 5 hours (EST) / − 4 hours (EDT) | 4:00 AM UTC = 11:00 PM EST (Jan 14), 12:00 AM EDT (Jul 15). |
| Chicago / Denver / Los Angeles | One / two / three hours behind New York | January: 10:00 PM CST, 9:00 PM MST, 8:00 PM PST, all Jan 14. |
| Honolulu | UTC − 10 hours (HST, no DST) | 4:00 AM UTC = 6:00 PM HST the previous day, in January and in July alike. |
| The date flip | Taipei ahead of the US by 12–13 hours | A Taipei morning is the previous US evening. |
| Business hours | 9:00 AM–6:00 PM Taipei | 8:00 PM–5:00 AM Eastern, previous day to same day (January). |
Who uses this
- The Taipei-based remote worker: books a noon Taipei stand-up and learns it is 11:00 PM the previous evening in New York, not the same day.
- The US manager with a Taipei team: stops scheduling “tomorrow morning” calls that land at midnight in Taipei, by checking both dates.
- The traveller flying to Taipei: converts a Taipei arrival time to the home city's clock before booking a connection.
- The family calling Taipei: checks that noon in Taipei is 6:00 PM the previous day in Honolulu in January, and plans around the evening hour.
Accuracy & limitations
Taiwan is on Asia/Taipei, UTC+8, and does not observe daylight saving, so this converter's Taipei side never changes with the seasons. US abbreviations and offsets come from the browser's time-zone database, which reflects current US daylight-saving rules; if the United States ever changes those rules, the converter follows the browser's update. The converter accepts real calendar dates only: February 30 and other impossible dates are rejected with an error, and times must be valid 24-hour times. It converts clock times only — it does not account for flight duration, layovers, or local holidays.
