Simple Interest + Principal Calculator: Total & Schedule

On the defaults — $10,000.00 at 5% for 3 years — the interest is $1,500.00 and the total amount is $11,500.00, with $500.00 of interest in each of the three years. Put in the principal, the annual rate, and the time, and the calculator works out the interest, the total amount, and the year-by-year schedule. The simple interest calculator computes the interest alone; this page computes the total amount — principal plus interest — with the schedule.

Simple interest + principal calculator

Simple interest is the interest on a sum of money, worked out once on the principal and paid the same every year — it never compounds. What most people actually want to know is the total amount: the principal plus the interest, year by year. Put in the principal, the annual rate, and the time, and the calculator works out the interest, the total, and the schedule — and works backwards when you have a target instead.

The amount the interest is worked out on — the starting sum. The default is $10,000.

The annual simple interest rate as a percent — 5% a year on the defaults. The default is 5%.

The time the money is held, in years — fractions of a year count, so 0.5 is six months. The default is 3.

Principal $10,000.00, rate 5.00%, 3 years: interest $1,500.00, total $11,500.00Principal $10,000.00, rate 5.00%, 3 years: interest $1,500.00, total $11,500.00Principal $10,000.00, rate 5.00%, 3 years: interest $1,500.00, total $11,500.00. Simple interest is the principal times the annual rate times the time in years, and the total amount is the principal plus the interest. The schedule shows each year separately: the interest is the same every year, because this is simple interest — it never compounds. A final partial year earns interest only for its fraction of the year. Most real loans compound or amortize, and this calculator does not model that. Rounding convention: totals are computed from unrounded values, so rounded parts may differ by a cent from their rounded sum.

How simple interest plus principal is worked out

On the defaults — $10,000.00 at 5% a year for 3 years — the interest is $1,500.00 and the total amount is $11,500.00. The whole calculation is two moves: multiply the principal by the rate and the time for the interest, and add the interest to the principal for the total. The schedule shows each year separately: year interest = principal × rate × the fraction of that year, and the running balance after each year.

Five things about the model are worth stating plainly. First, the interest is the principal times the annual rate times the time in years — $10,000.00 × 5% × 3 = $1,500.00. Second, the total amount is the principal plus the interest — $10,000.00 + $1,500.00 = $11,500.00. Third, this is simple interest only — it never compounds, so the interest is the same every year: $500.00 in year 1, $500.00 in year 2, and $500.00 in year 3. Fourth, a final partial year earns interest only for its fraction of the year — six months is 0.5 of a year, so $250.00, not $500.00. And fifth, most real loans compound or amortize, and this calculator does not model that — it is the plain, one-rate, no-compounding case.

Year-by-year schedule

On the defaults the schedule is three identical years of $500.00 — simple interest never compounds, so the interest is the same every year.

YearFraction of yearInterestRunning balance
Year 11$500.00$10,500.00
Year 21$500.00$11,000.00
Year 31$500.00$11,500.00

The worked example, line by line

Setup: $10,000.00 at 5% a year for 3 years.

Line 1 — multiply the principal by the rate and the time. The interest is $10,000.00 × 5% × 3 = $1,500.00.

Line 2 — add the interest to the principal. The total amount is $10,000.00 + $1,500.00 = $11,500.00.

Line 3 — lay out the schedule. Year 1 interest is $500.00 and the balance is $10,500.00; year 2 interest is $500.00 and the balance is $11,000.00; year 3 interest is $500.00 and the balance is $11,500.00. The interest is the same every year, because simple interest never compounds. Rounding convention: totals are computed from unrounded values, so rounded parts may differ by a cent from their rounded sum.

Every branch, checked

Principal $25,000: Principal $25,000.00, rate 5.00%, 3 years: interest $3,750.00, total $28,750.00 — two and a half times the principal, two and a half times the interest: $3,750.00.

Rate 8%: Principal $10,000.00, rate 8.00%, 3 years: interest $2,400.00, total $12,400.00 — three points more on the rate lifts the interest from $1,500.00 to $2,400.00.

Time 10 years: Principal $10,000.00, rate 5.00%, 10 years: interest $5,000.00, total $15,000.00 — ten years at 5% earns half the principal again: $5,000.00 of interest on $10,000.00.

Principal $5,000, rate 3%, time 5 years: Principal $5,000.00, rate 3.00%, 5 years: interest $750.00, total $5,750.00 — a smaller principal at a lower rate still earns $750.00 over five years.

What the defaults assume

The defaults are a $10,000.00 principal at 5% a year for 3 years — interest $1,500.00, total $11,500.00. With a $0 principal, Principal $0.00, rate 5.00%, 3 years: interest $0.00, total $0.00 — there is nothing to earn interest on. With a 0% rate, Principal $10,000.00, rate 0.00%, 3 years: interest $0.00, total $10,000.00 — the total is the principal alone. With a time of 0 years, Principal $10,000.00, rate 5.00%, 0 years: interest $0.00, total $10,000.00 — no interest accrues. With a time of 30 years, Principal $10,000.00, rate 5.00%, 30 years: interest $15,000.00, total $25,000.00 — thirty years at 5% earns one and a half times the principal. With a $1,000,000 principal, Principal $1,000,000.00, rate 5.00%, 3 years: interest $150,000.00, total $1,150,000.00. With a time of 0.25 years (3 months), Principal $10,000.00, rate 5.00%, 0.25 years: interest $125.00, total $10,125.00 — a single quarter-year row. Rounding convention: totals are computed from unrounded values, so rounded parts may differ by a cent from their rounded sum.

Who uses this

  • The saver with $10,000 at 5% for 3 years: they learn the interest is $1,500.00 and the total is $11,500.00, with $500.00 in each year — and they check the 6.67% reverse to see the rate it takes to earn $2,000 of interest.
  • The borrower comparing $25,000 with $10,000: they learn $25,000.00 at 5% for 3 years costs $3,750.00 of interest — and they check the $13,043.48 reverse to see the principal behind a $15,000 total.
  • The short-term lender, six months: they learn half a year earns $250.00 on $10,000.00 at 5% — and they check the 2.50-year reverse to see the time it takes to earn $1,250.
  • The long-horizon saver: they learn ten years at 5% earns $5,000.00 and $100,000.00 at 6% earns $6,000.00 in a year — and they check the 4-year step to see when the interest first reaches $2,000.

Accuracy & limitations

The math is first-principles: the interest is the principal times the annual rate times the time in years; the total amount is the principal plus the interest; the schedule shows each year separately, with a final partial year earning interest only for its fraction of the year. Every figure is rounded to cents half-up, and the totals are computed from unrounded values, so rounded parts may differ by a cent from their rounded sum. What the model cannot do is tell you what YOUR loan or deposit will cost or earn: it is simple interest only — it never compounds, so the interest is the same every year, while most real loans compound or amortize and the interest changes over the term; it does NOT model fees, late charges, or taxes on the interest; it does NOT model a rate that changes part-way through; and it does NOT model monthly or daily compounding, which most savings accounts use. Use it for the plain case — a fixed rate, a fixed term, no compounding — then check the real terms before you sign or deposit.

Method: simple interest I = principal × annual rate × time in years; total amount A = principal + interest. The schedule shows each year separately: year interest = principal × rate × the fraction of that year (a full year is 1.0; a final partial year is the remaining fraction), and the running balance after each year. This is simple interest only — it never compounds. Reverses: the rate for $2,000 interest is 6.67% (exact 6.6667%; at 6.67% the interest is $2,001.00); the principal for a $15,000 total is $13,043.48 (exact 13043.4783; at $13,043.48 the total is $15,000.00); the time for the interest to reach $2,000 is 4 years (at 4 years the interest is $2,000.00; 3 years gives $1,500.00); the time for $1,250 interest is 2.50 years (exact 2.5000; at 2.50 the interest is $1,250.00); the rate for a $20,000 total is 33.33% (exact 33.3333%; at 33.33% the total is $19,999.00); the principal for $3,000 interest is $20,000.00 (exact 20000.0000; at $20,000.00 the interest is $3,000.00). Defaults: Principal $10,000.00, rate 5.00%, 3 years: interest $1,500.00, total $11,500.00. Bright Side Kit. Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate simple interest?

Multiply the principal by the annual rate and the time in years. On the defaults — $10,000.00 at 5% for 3 years — that is $10,000.00 × 5% × 3 = $1,500.00 of interest.

What is the total amount with simple interest?

Add the interest to the principal. On the defaults the interest is $1,500.00, so the total amount is $10,000.00 + $1,500.00 = $11,500.00.

What rate gives $2,000 of interest on $10,000 over 3 years?

6.67%. The exact rate is 6.6667%: at 6.67% the interest is $2,001.00, $1 over the $2,000 target, because the rate is rounded. At 6.66% the interest is $1,998.00.

How long until the interest reaches $2,000?

4 years. At 4 years the interest is $2,000.00; at 3 years it is $1,500.00. Time comes in whole years here, so there is no exact in-between.

How much interest does $25,000 earn at 5% for 3 years?

$3,750.00. The total amount is $28,750.00. Two and a half times the principal, two and a half times the interest.

Does simple interest compound?

No — the interest is the same every year. On the defaults it is $500.00 in year 1, $500.00 in year 2, and $500.00 in year 3. Most real loans compound or amortize, so the interest changes over the term — this calculator does not model that.

What principal gives a $15,000 total at 5% for 3 years?

$13,043.48. The exact principal is 13043.4783: at $13,043.48 the total is $15,000.00 exactly.

How much interest do I earn in 6 months?

$250.00 on $10,000.00 at 5%. Six months is 0.5 of a year, so the interest is $10,000.00 × 5% × 0.5 = $250.00, and the total is $10,250.00.
