Siding coverage chart & calculator
Put your wall area, profile, waste factor and carton coverage in: 1,500 sq ft in Double 4 vinyl is 198 panels in 9 cartons.
★ CONSTRUCTION · SIDING · COVERAGE CHART
On the defaults — a 1,500 sq ft wall in Double 4 vinyl at 10% waste, with 200 sq ft cartons (the common standard for horizontal vinyl — check your box label, since carton sizes vary) — the wall is 15.00 squares, needs 1,650.00 sq ft of siding with waste, which is 198 panels in 9 cartons. This is the SIDING coverage chart — squares, panels and cartons by siding profile — the paint-coverage-chart page is the PAINT version — gallons per room at a coverage rate per gallon — not panels per square; the lumber-board-feet-chart page is the LUMBER version — board feet per board by nominal size — not siding squares; and the drywall-calculator page is the DRYWALL version — sheets and price per room — not siding profiles and waste.
Put your wall area, profile, waste factor and carton coverage in: 1,500 sq ft in Double 4 vinyl is 198 panels in 9 cartons.
It means a 1,500 sq ft wall is 15 squares of siding, because one square is 100 sq ft. With 10% waste the order quantity is 1,650.00 sq ft, and at 8.33 sq ft per Double 4 panel that is exactly 198 panels — no rounding needed on the headline, because 1,650.00 divided by 8.33 is 198. At 200 sq ft a carton, 1,650.00 sq ft needs 9 cartons, since 8 cartons cover only 1,600 sq ft. The carton count is the figure to order; the panel count is the figure to check against the delivery note.
Measure net area, not gross wall area. The calculator expects the area after windows and doors are subtracted. On a wall with large openings, gross area can overstate the order by a whole carton or more — measure each wall, subtract each opening, then add the walls together.
Exposure is not panel width. A Double 4 panel is wider than its 8 in of exposure: the top of each panel hides under the panel above it. Coverage must use the exposed face only, which is why the table lists exposure separately from length — using the full panel width would under-order every time.
Check the carton label — published box sizes disagree wildly. The 200 sq ft default (2 squares) is the common packaging standard for standard horizontal vinyl, but it is not a universal fact: some suppliers pack 100 sq ft (1 square) a carton, and some specialty panels pack far less per box. That is why carton coverage is an input on this page, not a fixed figure. If your carton covers 100 sq ft, the same 1,650.00 sq ft needs 17 cartons, not 9 — read the label and type your own figure before ordering. Squares and the 10–15% waste allowance are the primary calculation; boxes are only a packaging conversion on top of them.
On the defaults: 1,500 sq ft wall, Double 4 vinyl, 10% waste, 200 sq ft cartons.
And the other way: the wall area that exactly fills 9 cartons at 10% waste is 1,636.36 sq ft, the largest whole waste percentage still fitting 9 cartons on 1,500 sq ft is 20%, and the wall area for exactly 200 Double 4 panels at 10% waste is 1,515.15 sq ft.
The vinyl rows below are computed from the profile exposures in the CertainTeed vinyl siding style list — Double 4, Double 4-1/2, Double 5, Triple 3 and Single 8 — at the industry-standard 12.5 ft vinyl panel length, so the figures are geometry, not a single supplier's carton claim. The fiber-cement rows reproduce the plank counts from the James Hardie HardiePlank lap siding coverage chart and estimating guide for 12 ft planks, which states that its counts do not include waste. Where the calculator's exact figure and a published chart count differ by one plank, the calculator rounds up: it is better to carry one spare plank than to run short mid-wall.

Sources, in our own words: the vinyl profile names and exposures follow the CertainTeed vinyl siding installation guide's style list, and the fiber-cement plank counts follow the James Hardie HardiePlank lap siding coverage chart and estimating guide for 12 ft planks (counts exclude waste). Always confirm the exact panel length and carton coverage on the product you buy, since both vary by supplier.
Squares and waste are the primary calculation; boxes are only a packaging conversion under the stated default of 200 sq ft (2 squares) a carton, the common standard for standard horizontal vinyl. Published carton sizes disagree — some cartons hold 100 sq ft, some far less — so if your carton holds a different amount, divide the waste-adjusted area by your carton size and round up instead of using this table's carton column. The squares and waste-adjusted areas below do not depend on carton size at all.
| Wall area | Squares | With 10% waste | Cartons at 10% waste | With 15% waste | Cartons at 15% waste |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 500 sq ft | 5.00 squares | 550.00 sq ft | 3 cartons | 575.00 sq ft | 3 cartons |
| 1,000 sq ft | 10.00 squares | 1,100.00 sq ft | 6 cartons | 1,150.00 sq ft | 6 cartons |
| 1,500 sq ft | 15.00 squares | 1,650.00 sq ft | 9 cartons | 1,725.00 sq ft | 9 cartons |
| 2,000 sq ft | 20.00 squares | 2,200.00 sq ft | 11 cartons | 2,300.00 sq ft | 12 cartons |
| 3,000 sq ft | 30.00 squares | 3,300.00 sq ft | 17 cartons | 3,450.00 sq ft | 18 cartons |
Worked row: a 2,000 sq ft wall is 20.00 squares; with 10% waste it is 2,200.00 sq ft, which needs 11 cartons at 200 sq ft a carton (10 cartons cover only 2,000 sq ft), and with 15% waste it is 2,300.00 sq ft, which needs 12 cartons. At 100 sq ft a carton instead, the same 2,200.00 sq ft would need 22 cartons — the carton column doubles, while the squares and waste-adjusted area stay exactly the same.
The defaults are a 1,500 sq ft net wall area, Double 4 vinyl at 8 in exposure and 12.5 ft length, 10% waste and 200 sq ft cartons. The model is one division for squares, one multiplication for the waste-adjusted area, and two round-ups: panels and cartons are always rounded up, because part of a panel or carton cannot be bought. The area reverse is checked at 10 sq ft either side, because 10 sq ft moves the panel count by about two panels and flips the carton count at the 9-carton boundary; the waste reverse is checked at 1 percentage point either side, because 1 point on 1,500 sq ft is 15 sq ft. The model does not count starter strips, J-channels, corner posts, soffit or fascia, and it does not deduct for gable triangles unless you measure them into the net area — those are separate line items on a real order.
| Output | Formula | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Squares | wall area ÷ 100 | 15.00 — 1,500 ÷ 100. |
| Area with waste | wall area × (1 + waste ÷ 100) | 1,650.00 sq ft — 1,500 × 1.10. |
| Coverage per panel | exposure ÷ 12 × length | 8.33 sq ft — 8 ÷ 12 × 12.5. |
| Panels to order | CEILING(area with waste ÷ coverage per panel) | 198 panels — 1,650.00 ÷ 8.33, rounded up. |
| Cartons to order | CEILING(area with waste ÷ carton coverage) | 9 cartons — 1,650.00 ÷ 200, rounded up. |

Figures are the model's own arithmetic on the numbers you type, computed from unrounded values and displayed rounded HALF_UP to 2dp, except panel and carton counts, which are whole numbers rounded up. The main limitation is the input, not the arithmetic: the wall area must be net of openings, the exposure must be the exposed face (not the full panel width), and the carton coverage must match the carton you actually buy. The model does not count trim, accessories or starter courses, and it does not adjust for gable shapes unless you measure them into the area. This page is a calculation tool, not a contractor's estimate or a manufacturer's specification — confirm panel length and carton coverage on the product label.
A 1,500 sq ft wall in Double 4 vinyl needs 15.00 squares, 198 panels and 9 cartons at 10% waste with 200 sq ft cartons. Source: Bright Side Kit, brightoolbox.com.
198 panels at 10% waste. The wall is 15.00 squares; with waste it is 1,650.00 sq ft, and at 8.33 sq ft a panel that is 198 panels in 9 cartons at 200 sq ft a carton.
100 sq ft. A square is the industry unit for siding and roofing: a 1,500 sq ft wall is 15.00 squares.
12 panels, exactly. Each 12.5 ft panel at 8 in exposure covers 8.33 sq ft, and 100 divided by 8.33 is 12. Double 5 needs 10 panels a square; fiber-cement 8-1/4 in plank needs 15 by the calculator's round-up.
10% for a straightforward wall, 15% for walls with many windows, gables or short runs. On 1,500 sq ft, 20% is the largest whole waste percentage that still fits 9 cartons at 200 sq ft a carton.
9 cartons at 200 sq ft a carton and 10% waste. If your carton covers 100 sq ft instead, the same order needs 17 cartons — check the label.
Because part of a panel cannot be bought. An order of 158.4 panels must be 159 panels; rounding down would leave the wall short. The same rule applies to cartons.
No. Starter strips, J-channels, corner posts, soffit and fascia are separate line items. This page counts siding panels and cartons only.
