What does a 2-inch standard screw mean?
On the default — a screw 2 inches long — the centimetres are 5.08 cm and the type is a standard screw. The screw length is the length of the screw itself, and 2 inches is the classic general-purpose screw length — the middle of the 1.25–3 in standard zone. The centimetres are the inches times 2.54: 2 × 2.54 = 5.08 cm. The bands are CLOSED at both ends: short 0.5–1 in, standard 1.25–3 in, long 3.5–4 in (screw LENGTH). Lengths between the bands (1.01–1.24 in and 3.01–3.49 in) match NO standard type — the bands have gaps, they are not continuous — and lengths of 4.01 in and above, and below 0.5 in, match NO standard type either.
Three things about the model are worth stating plainly.
First, the conversion is 2 × 2.54 = 5.08 cm. Second, the meaning is a screw 2 inches long — the general-purpose screw for joining two boards, long enough to bite through one board into the next without poking through. And third, the centimetre figure is displayed to two decimals, half-up, and a figure that displays as 1.91 cm can sit a hair below the line — 0.75 in gives 1.9050 cm, which displays as 1.91 cm — and one that displays as 3.18 cm can sit a hair below it — 1.25 in gives 3.1750 cm, which displays as 3.18 cm. The page prints the unrounded value so the rounding does not mislead you.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: screw 2 inches long.
Line 1 — the centimetres. 2 × 2.54 = 5.08 cm.
Line 2 — the type. 2 inches sits in the middle of the 1.25–3 in standard band, so the type is a standard screw.
Line 3 — the check. At 1.19 inches the centimetres are 3.02 cm; and at 1.18 inches they are 3.00 cm — below 3.00 cm.

The table runs from 1/2 to 4 inches. Every length in the table sits inside one of the three bands: 1/2–1 in are short screws, 1-1/4–3 in are standard screws and 3-1/2–4 in are long screws. The bands are closed at both ends — 1 in is a short screw, 3 in is a standard screw and 4 in is a long screw. Lengths between the bands (1.01–1.24 in and 3.01–3.49 in) match NO standard type, and lengths of 4.01 in and above, and below 0.5 in, match NO standard type either.
0.5 in: 0.50 in = 1.27 cm; matches short screw (1 type) — 0.5 inches is the bottom of the table, a short screw.
0.75 in: 0.75 in = 1.91 cm; matches short screw (1 type) — 0.75 inches is a short screw, a quarter inch above the bottom of the table.
1.25 in: 1.25 in = 3.18 cm; matches standard screw (1 type) — 1.25 inches is a standard screw, the bottom of the standard zone.
1.5 in: 1.50 in = 3.81 cm; matches standard screw (1 type) — 1.5 inches is a standard screw, a quarter inch above the bottom of the standard zone.
2 in: 2 in = 5.08 cm; matches standard screw (1 type) — 2 inches is the classic general-purpose screw length, the middle of the standard zone.
3 in: 3 in = 7.62 cm; matches standard screw (1 type) — 3 inches is a standard screw, the top of the standard zone.
Length bars — 0.5 in, 2 in, 4 in: 0.50 in: 1.27 cm — short screw; 2 in: 5.08 cm — standard screw; 4 in: 10.16 cm — long screw — one length from each band: the bottom of the table, the classic standard length and the top of the table.
The reverses, worked backwards
Smallest length for the cm figure to reach 3.00 cm: At the displayed 1.19 in the figures are 1.19 in = 3.02 cm (unrounded 3.0226 cm); matches no standard type. At 1.18 in the figure is 3.00 cm (unrounded 2.9972 cm), below 3.00 cm — so 1.19 in is the smallest length that reaches 3.00 cm.
Largest length for the cm figure to STAY at or below 5.00 cm: At the displayed 1.96 in the figures are 1.96 in = 4.98 cm (unrounded 4.9784 cm); matches standard screw (1 type). At 1.97 in the figure is 5.00 cm (unrounded 5.0038 cm), above 5.00 cm — so 1.96 in is the largest length that stays at or below 5.00 cm.
Smallest length that matches a standard screw: At the displayed 1.25 in the figures are 1.25 in = 3.18 cm (unrounded 3.1750 cm); matches standard screw (1 type). At 1.24 in the figure is 3.15 cm (unrounded 3.1496 cm) and it matches NO standard type at all — so 1.25 in is the smallest length that matches a standard screw.
Smallest length for the cm figure to reach 8.00 cm: At the displayed 3.15 in the figures are 3.15 in = 8.00 cm (unrounded 8.0010 cm); matches no standard type. At 3.14 in the figure is 7.98 cm (unrounded 7.9756 cm), below 8.00 cm — so 3.15 in is the smallest length that reaches 8.00 cm.
Largest length for the cm figure to STAY at or below 9.00 cm: At the displayed 3.54 in the figures are 3.54 in = 8.99 cm (unrounded 8.9916 cm); matches long screw (1 type). At 3.55 in the figure is 9.02 cm (unrounded 9.0170 cm), above 9.00 cm — so 3.54 in is the largest length that stays at or below 9.00 cm.
Smallest length that matches a long screw: At the displayed 3.50 in the figures are 3.50 in = 8.89 cm (unrounded 8.8900 cm); matches long screw (1 type). At 3.49 in the figure is 8.86 cm (unrounded 8.8646 cm) and it matches NO standard type at all — so 3.50 in is the smallest length that matches a long screw.
A warning about the neighbours: every neighbour above sits one hundredth of an inch from the star, and every neighbour centimetre figure is a hair below or above the target even though it displays as the target — a 0.01 in move changes the centimetres by less than 0.005, so the displayed two-decimal figure cannot tell the star from its neighbour. The page prints the unrounded four-decimal value in full so the rounding does not mislead you: 3.0226, 2.9972, 4.9784, 5.0038, 3.1750, 3.1496, 8.0010, 7.9756, 8.9916, 9.0170, 8.8900, 8.8646.
What the defaults assume
The defaults are a screw 2 inches long — 2 in = 5.08 cm; matches standard screw (1 type). With 0.5 in, 0.50 in = 1.27 cm; matches short screw (1 type). With 0.75 in, 0.75 in = 1.91 cm; matches short screw (1 type). With 1.25 in, 1.25 in = 3.18 cm; matches standard screw (1 type). With 1.5 in, 1.50 in = 3.81 cm; matches standard screw (1 type). With 2 in, 2 in = 5.08 cm; matches standard screw (1 type). With 3 in, 3 in = 7.62 cm; matches standard screw (1 type). With Length bars — 0.5 in, 2 in, 4 in, 0.50 in: 1.27 cm — short screw; 2 in: 5.08 cm — standard screw; 4 in: 10.16 cm — long screw. With Length 0, 0 in = 0.00 cm; matches no standard type — no length at all, and no matching type. With Length -5, 0 in = 0.00 cm; matches no standard type — a negative length is floored to 0.00 cm, never a negative number. With Length 0.75, 0.75 in = 1.91 cm (unrounded 1.9050 cm); matches short screw (1 type) — the centimetre figure displays as 1.91 cm. With Length 1.25, 1.25 in = 3.18 cm (unrounded 3.1750 cm); matches standard screw (1 type) — the centimetre figure displays as 3.18 cm. With Length 4, 4 in = 10.16 cm; matches long screw (1 type) — the top of the table. With Length 1.1, 1.10 in = 2.79 cm; matches no standard type — in the gap between the short and standard bands, so no standard type. With Length 3.25, 3.25 in = 8.26 cm; matches no standard type — in the gap between the standard and long bands, so no standard type. With Lengths 0.5, 1, 1.25, 3, 3.5, 4 and 5, 0.50 in = 1.27 cm — short screw; 1 in = 2.54 cm — short screw; 1.25 in = 3.18 cm — standard screw; 3 in = 7.62 cm — standard screw; 3.50 in = 8.89 cm — long screw; 4 in = 10.16 cm — long screw; 5 in = 12.70 cm — matches no standard type — the bottom of the short band, the top of the short band, the bottom of the standard band, the top of the standard band, the bottom of the long band, the top of the long band, and past the long band. With Length 1.75, 1.75 in = 4.45 cm (unrounded 4.4450 cm); matches standard screw (1 type) — the centimetre figure displays as 4.45 cm. With Length 2.5, 2.50 in = 6.35 cm; matches standard screw (1 type) — inside the standard band. With Length 0.25, 0.25 in = 0.64 cm; matches no standard type — below the 0.5-in short band, so no standard type.
A note on the rounding: the centimetre figure is displayed to two decimals, half-up. With length 0.75 in the unrounded figure is 1.9050 cm — it displays as 1.91 cm. With length 1.25 in the unrounded figure is 3.1750 cm — it displays as 3.18 cm. With length 1.75 in the unrounded figure is 4.4450 cm — it displays as 4.45 cm. The page prints the unrounded value so the rounding does not mislead you.

Who uses this
- The woodworker joining two boards: they learn a screw 2 inches long is 5.08 cm and a standard screw — and they check the 1.25 in reverse to see the smallest length that matches a standard screw.
- The DIYer hanging trim: they learn the short zone is 0.5–1 in and below 1.25 in the screw is too short to hold two boards together — and they check the 3.50 in reverse to see the smallest length that matches a long screw.
- The framer driving long screws: they learn above 3 in the screw is a framing screw that needs a pilot hole in hardwood — and they check the 3.54 in reverse to see the largest length that stays at or below 9.00 cm.
- The student converting inches to centimetres: they learn the centimetres are the inches times 2.54 — and they check the 1.19 in reverse to see the smallest length that reaches 3.00 cm.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is first-principles: the centimetres are the length in inches times 2.54, and the type comes from the closed bands — short 0.5–1 in, standard 1.25–3 in, long 3.5–4 in (screw LENGTH) — all in inches and centimetres, the centimetre figure displayed to two decimals half-up. There is no division in this calculator — nothing is ever undefined. A negative length is floored to 0.00 cm, never a negative number. 2 in is the standard screw length — the general-purpose screw for joining two boards, long enough to bite through one board into the next without poking through; below 1.25 in the screw is too short to hold two boards together and is only for trim and thin stock; above 3 in the screw is a framing screw that needs a pilot hole in hardwood and risks splitting thin stock. 0.5 in is the short floor — below it the screw barely bites; 4 in is the practical ceiling — above it the screw is a lag bolt's job, not a wood screw's. This is why the standard zone runs 1.25–3 in while the short zone stops at 1 in — the standard screw is the two-board joint, and 2 in is its middle. What the model cannot do is pick the screw for you: it says nothing about the wood, the load or the screw's gauge — a 2-inch screw that suits softwood can split hardwood without a pilot hole. Use it to check the length before you buy — then check the screw-size, bolt-size, nail-size and drill-bit charts before you set the rest of the job.
No screw-length page of any kind exists on the site — this is the first. The closest pages are the screw-size chart (screw GAUGE and DIAMETER — the thickness, not the length), the bolt-size chart (BOLTS — not screws), the nail-size chart (NAILS — not screws) and the drill-bit-size chart (DRILL BITS — the hole, not the screw). This one is the SCREW's own 12-row inch-to-centimetre reference (1/2–4 in) with its three length bands (short 0.5–1, standard 1.25–3, long 3.5–4 in) and band/gap logic.

Frequently asked questions
What length screw should I use?
2 inches for most joints. A standard screw is 2 inches long — 5.08 cm. The standard zone is 1.25–3 in.
How do I convert screw length from inches to centimetres?
Multiply the inches by 2.54. 2 × 2.54 = 5.08 cm. A 1/2-inch screw is 1.27 cm and a 4-inch screw is 10.16 cm.
What are the screw length bands?
Short 0.5–1 in, standard 1.25–3 in, long 3.5–4 in. The bands are closed at both ends and have gaps: 1.01–1.24 in and 3.01–3.49 in match no standard type.
What is the smallest length that reaches 3.00 cm?
1.19 inches. The smallest length for the centimetre figure to reach 3.00 cm is 1.19 in, which is 3.02 cm (unrounded 3.0226 cm). At 1.18 in the figure is 3.00 cm (unrounded 2.9972 cm), below 3.00 cm.
What is the smallest length that matches a standard screw?
1.25 inches. The smallest length that matches a standard screw is 1.25 in, which is 3.18 cm. At 1.24 in the figure is 3.15 cm (unrounded 3.1496 cm) and it matches no standard type.
Can a screw be too long?
Yes — above 4 inches. Lengths of 4.01 in and above match no standard type — above 4 in the screw is a lag bolt's job, not a wood screw's. A 5-inch screw is 12.70 cm and matches no standard type.
What is the difference between screw length and screw size?
One is how long, the other how thick. Screw length is the screw's length in inches — this chart. Screw size is the screw's gauge and diameter — the thickness. Work it out in the screw size chart.
