Savings Rate Calculator: What Percent Do You Save?

On the defaults — a $6,000.00 after-tax income, $4,500.00 of monthly spending, and a 5% real return — the monthly savings are $1,500.00, the savings rate is 25.00%, the annual savings are $18,000.00, the financial-independence number is $1,350,000.00, and the years to financial independence are 31.94. Put in your income and spending, and the calculator works out your exact rate and your own years to financial independence — and works backwards when you have a target instead. The savings rate to retirement chart is a fixed chart of savings rates vs years; this page is an interactive calculator — it takes YOUR income and spending, gives your exact rate, and computes your own years to financial independence.

Savings rate calculator

Your savings rate is the share of after-tax income you keep — and it is the single number that decides how fast you reach financial independence. Put in your after-tax monthly income and your monthly spending, and the calculator works out the rate, the monthly and annual savings, the 25× independence number, and the years to reach it at a 5% real return — and works backwards when you have a target instead.

Your take-home pay each month, after tax — the starting point of the rate. The default is $6,000.

Everything you spend in a month — rent, food, bills, fun. The default is $4,500.

The yearly growth of your savings after inflation — 5% is the long-run real return used here. The default is 5%.

Income $6,000.00, spending $4,500.00, return 5.00%: savings $1,500.00, rate 25.00%, annual savings $18,000.00, annual spending $54,000.00, FI number $1,350,000.00, years 31.94Income $6,000.00, spending $4,500.00, return 5.00%: savings $1,500.00, rate 25.00%, annual savings $18,000.00, annual spending $54,000.00, FI number $1,350,000.00, years 31.94Income $6,000.00, spending $4,500.00, return 5.00%: savings $1,500.00, rate 25.00%, annual savings $18,000.00, annual spending $54,000.00, FI number $1,350,000.00, years 31.94. The savings rate is (after-tax income - monthly spending) / after-tax income x 100; the financial-independence number is 25 x annual spending, and the years to FI solve annual savings x ((1 + return)^years - 1) / return = FI number at a 5% real return with contributions at year-end. This is a rule-of-thumb projection — it holds spending and the return flat, ignores taxes, inflation, raises, and market swings, and the 25x target assumes a 4% withdrawal rate.

How the savings rate is worked out

On the defaults — a $6,000.00 after-tax income, $4,500.00 of monthly spending, and a 5% real return — the monthly savings are $1,500.00, the savings rate is 25.00%, the annual savings are $18,000.00, the financial-independence number is $1,350,000.00, and the years to financial independence are 31.94. The whole calculation is four moves: subtract spending from income for the monthly savings, divide by income for the rate, multiply by 12 and by 25 for the annual savings and the independence number, and solve the growth equation for the years.

Five things about the model are worth stating plainly. First, the monthly savings are income minus spending — $6,000.00 − $4,500.00 = $1,500.00. Second, the savings rate is the savings divided by income — $1,500.00 ÷ $6,000.00 = 25.00% — the share of after-tax income you keep. Third, the annual savings are the monthly savings times 12 — $1,500.00 × 12 = $18,000.00 — and the annual spending is $4,500.00 × 12 = $54,000.00. Fourth, the financial-independence number is 25 times annual spending — 25 × $54,000.00 = $1,350,000.00 — the 4% rule: a $1,350,000.00 portfolio supports a 4% yearly withdrawal of $54,000.00. And fifth, the years to FI solve $18,000.00 × ((1 + 5%)^n − 1) ÷ 5% = $1,350,000.00, which gives 31.94 years at a 5% real return with contributions at year-end. This is a rule-of-thumb projection — it holds spending and the return flat, ignores taxes, inflation, raises, and market swings, and the 25× target assumes a 4% withdrawal rate; all listed in Accuracy & limitations.

The worked example, line by line

Setup: $6,000.00 after-tax income, $4,500.00 monthly spending, 5% real return.

Line 1 — subtract spending from income. The monthly savings are $6,000.00 − $4,500.00 = $1,500.00.

Line 2 — divide by income. The savings rate is $1,500.00 ÷ $6,000.00 = 25.00%.

Line 3 — multiply by 12 and by 25. The annual savings are $1,500.00 × 12 = $18,000.00, the annual spending is $4,500.00 × 12 = $54,000.00, and the FI number is 25 × $54,000.00 = $1,350,000.00.

Line 4 — solve for the years. The years to FI are 31.94 at a 5% real return with contributions at year-end.

What the defaults assume

The defaults are a $6,000.00 after-tax income, $4,500.00 of monthly spending, and a 5% real return — savings $1,500.00, rate 25.00%, annual savings $18,000.00, FI number $1,350,000.00, years 31.94. With spending of $0, Income $6,000.00, spending $0.00, return 5.00%: savings $6,000.00, rate 100.00%, annual savings $72,000.00, annual spending $0.00, FI number $0.00, years 0.00 — nothing spent, everything saved, and the FI number is $0.00 because there is nothing to fund. With spending of $6,000.00, the same as income, Income $6,000.00, spending $6,000.00, return 5.00%: savings $0.00, rate 0.00%, annual savings $0.00, annual spending $72,000.00, FI number $1,800,000.00, years not on track — no savings to grow, so there is no years figure: not on track. With spending of $7,000.00, more than income, Income $6,000.00, spending $7,000.00, return 5.00%: savings -$1,000.00, rate -16.67%, annual savings -$12,000.00, annual spending $84,000.00, FI number $2,100,000.00, years not on track — a negative savings rate, also not on track. With an income of $0, Income $0.00, spending $4,500.00, return 5.00%: savings -$4,500.00, rate 0.00% (a rate needs income), annual savings -$54,000.00, annual spending $54,000.00, FI number $1,350,000.00, years not on track — the rate is shown as 0.00% because a rate needs income. With an income of $100,000.00, Income $100,000.00, spending $4,500.00, return 5.00%: savings $95,500.00, rate 95.50%, annual savings $1,146,000.00, annual spending $54,000.00, FI number $1,350,000.00, years 1.17 — a 95.50% rate reaches the same $1,350,000.00 number in 1.17 years. With a return of 0%, Income $6,000.00, spending $4,500.00, return 0.00%: savings $1,500.00, rate 25.00%, annual savings $18,000.00, annual spending $54,000.00, FI number $1,350,000.00, years 75.00 — no growth, so the years are simply the FI number divided by the annual savings.

Who uses this

  • The saver on $6,000.00 a month: they learn the rate is 25.00% and the years are 31.94 — and they check the $7,500.00 reverse to see the income for a 40.00% rate.
  • The saver who cut spending to $3,000.00: they learn the rate is 50.00% and the years are 16.62 — and they check the $7,903 reverse to see the income that gets under 20 years.
  • The saver earning $10,000.00: they learn the rate is 55.00% and the years are 14.44 — and they check the 8.17% reverse to see the return that gives 25.00 years.
  • The saver spending $5,500.00: they learn the rate is 8.33% and the years are 55.16 — and they check the $3,000.00 reverse to see the spending for a 50.00% rate.

Accuracy & limitations

The math is first-principles: the savings rate is (income − spending) ÷ income × 100; the annual savings are the monthly savings × 12; the FI number is 25 × annual spending; the years solve annual savings × ((1 + r)^n − 1) ÷ r = FI number. Every figure is rounded to cents half-up, and intermediate money values are rounded to cents before the next step. What the model cannot do is tell you when YOU will reach financial independence: it is a rule-of-thumb projection only — it does NOT model taxes, inflation, raises, or market swings; it does NOT model spending that changes over time; it does NOT model the return varying year to year; and it assumes a 4% withdrawal rate, while safe withdrawal rates are debated and depend on how long the money must last. A negative savings rate means spending more than income — the model says “not on track” rather than printing a years figure. Use it to see the levers — spending first, then income, then the return — then check a full plan before you act on it.

Cite this calculatorBright Side Kit. “Savings Rate Calculator: What Percent Do You Save?” brightoolbox.com, 2026. Method: savings rate = (after-tax income − monthly spending) ÷ after-tax income × 100; monthly savings = income − spending; annual savings = monthly savings × 12; annual spending = monthly spending × 12; FI number = 25 × annual spending; years to FI solve annual savings × ((1 + r)^n − 1) ÷ r = FI number at a 5% real return with contributions at year-end. This is a rule-of-thumb projection, not financial advice. Reverses: the income for a 40.00% savings rate is $7,500.00 (exact 7500.0000; at $7,500.00 the rate is 40.00%); the spending for $2,000.00 of monthly savings is $4,000.00 (exact 4000.0000; at $4,000.00 the savings are $2,000.00); the income for years-to-FI of 20.00 or less is $7,903 (at $7,903 the years are 19.9973); the spending for a 50.00% savings rate is $3,000.00 (exact 3000.0000; at $3,000.00 the rate is 50.00%); the return for years-to-FI of 25.00 is 8.17% (exact 8.1749%; at 8.17% the years are 25.01); the income for $3,000.00 of monthly savings is $7,500.00 (exact 7500.0000; at $7,500.00 the savings are $3,000.00). Defaults: Income $6,000.00, spending $4,500.00, return 5.00%: savings $1,500.00, rate 25.00%, annual savings $18,000.00, annual spending $54,000.00, FI number $1,350,000.00, years 31.94. Frequently asked questions

What is a good savings rate?

25.00% on the defaults — $1,500.00 saved from $6,000.00 of income. The classic FIRE benchmarks are 25% as a solid start, 50% as aggressive, and 70%+ as extreme. At 50.00% the years to FI are 16.62; at 25.00% they are 31.94.

How do I calculate my savings rate?

Subtract spending from after-tax income, then divide by income. On the defaults: ($6,000.00 − $4,500.00) ÷ $6,000.00 = 25.00%. Use take-home pay, not gross pay — the rate is about what you keep after tax.

What income do I need for a 40% savings rate?

$7,500.00 at $4,500.00 of spending. At $7,500.00 the savings are $3,000.00 and the rate is 40.00% exactly. At $7,499.00 the rate is 39.99%.

How long until I can retire at a 25% savings rate?

31.94 years on the defaults. A $6,000.00 income and $4,500.00 of spending gives $18,000.00 of annual savings against a $1,350,000.00 independence number at a 5% real return.

What income gets me to financial independence in under 20 years?

$7,903 at $4,500.00 of spending. At $7,903 the years are 19.9973; at $7,902 they are 20.0011 — $7,903 is the smallest whole-dollar income that gets under 20 years.

What if I spend more than I earn?

The rate goes negative and there is no years figure. Spending $7,000.00 on a $6,000.00 income gives savings of −$1,000.00, a rate of −16.67%, and the page says “not on track” — there are no savings to grow.

What does the 25x number mean?

25 times your annual spending is the portfolio that funds a 4% yearly withdrawal. On the defaults, 25 × $54,000.00 = $1,350,000.00, and 4% of $1,350,000.00 is $54,000.00 a year.

What return do I need to reach FI in 25 years?

8.17% on the defaults. The exact return is 8.1749%; at the displayed 8.17% the years are 25.01, and at 8.16% they are 25.02.
