On the defaults — a $65.00 monthly base allowance plus 2 sailing trips a month at $45.00 each — your sailing allowance totals $155.00 a month and $1,860.00 for the year. The base covers the recurring sailing extras; the trips line prices the paid days on the water. Change any figure below and the month and year totals update at once. See also the cycling-allowance-calculator for the cycling version of the same base-plus-trips shape, and the how-to-calculate-sailing-allowance guide for the method worked step by step.
Put your monthly base allowance, sailing trips per month and cost per sailing trip in: $65.00 base plus 2 sailing trips at $45.00 total $155.00 a month, $1,860.00 over 12 months.
It means $65.00 of recurring base allowance plus $90.00 of paid sailing trips: 2 trips at $45.00 each. The base is the larger share here at 41.94% of the monthly total, and the trips are the rest. Over 12 months that is $780.00 of base plus $1,080.00 of sailing trips, $1,860.00 in all. Raise the base by $10.00 and the month rises by exactly $10.00; add one sailing trip at $45.00 and the month rises by $45.00.
| Output | Formula | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Sailing trips total per month | sailing trips × cost per sailing trip | $90.00 — 2 × $45.00. |
| Total per month | monthly base allowance + sailing trips × cost per sailing trip | $155.00 — $65.00 + $90.00. |
| Total sailing allowance | (monthly base allowance + sailing trips × cost per sailing trip) × 12 | $1,860.00 — $155.00 × 12. |
| Base total | monthly base allowance × 12 | $780.00 — $65.00 × 12. |
| Sailing trips total | sailing trips × cost per sailing trip × 12 | $1,080.00 — 2 × $45.00 × 12. |
| Base behind a target monthly total | target monthly total − sailing trips × cost per sailing trip | $65.00 — $155.00 − $90.00. |
| Per-trip amount behind a target monthly total | (target monthly total − monthly base allowance) ÷ sailing trips | $45.00 — ($155.00 − $65.00) ÷ 2. |
| Sailing trips behind a target monthly total | (target monthly total − monthly base allowance) ÷ cost per sailing trip | 2 — ($155.00 − $65.00) ÷ $45.00. |
First, keep the base recurring: sail care, line replacement and small extras that genuinely repeat each month. A one-off sail purchase is not base, and spreading it across the base inflates every month. Second, count only paid sailing trips: days covered by a club membership or by the base itself cost $0.00 extra and must not be entered, or the total counts them twice. Third, make the per-trip price the full price you actually pay for a day on the water — charter share plus any trip-only gear hire — not the launch fee alone.
Base $65.00, 2 sailing trips, $45.00 per sailing trip. Sailing trips total: 2 × $45.00 = $90.00. Monthly total: $65.00 + $90.00 = $155.00. Yearly total: $155.00 × 12 = $1,860.00, split as $780.00 base and $1,080.00 trips. Add a third trip and the month becomes $200.00; drop to one trip and it becomes $110.00. Because the base is fixed, the trips line carries all of the seasonal swing.
An $85.00 base with the same sailing trips and per-trip amount gives $175.00 a month and $2,100.00 a year. A $40.00 per-trip amount with the same base and sailing trips gives $145.00 a month and $1,740.00 a year. One sailing trip with the same base and per-trip amount gives $110.00 a month and $1,320.00 a year. Four sailing trips with the same base and per-trip amount give $245.00 a month and $2,940.00 a year. Each branch changes exactly one input, so the difference from $155.00 isolates that input.
The base behind $155.00 a month is $65.00: at $55.00 the figures are $145.00 a month and $1,740.00 a year, and at $75.00 they are $165.00 a month and $1,980.00 a year — a $10.00 step moves the month by $10.00. The per-trip amount behind $155.00 a month is $45.00: at $40.00 the figures are $145.00 a month and $1,740.00 a year, and at $50.00 they are $165.00 a month and $1,980.00 a year — a $5.00 step moves the month by $10.00, because it applies to both trips. The sailing trips behind $155.00 a month are 2: at 1 trip the figures are $110.00 a month and $1,320.00 a year, and at 4 trips they are $245.00 a month and $2,940.00 a year — the step from 2 to 4 is two trips, so the month moves by $90.00.
The defaults assume a flat $65.00 base every month of the year, 2 paid sailing trips every month, and a constant $45.00 per sailing trip. Real sailing is seasonal: a summer month may hold 5 trips and a winter month none, so the honest use is to enter the average month, or to run the calculator once per season and add the seasons. Zero sailing trips is the honest edge: $65.00 a month and $780.00 a year, the base alone. Negative inputs are rejected — a base, a trip count, or a per-trip price below zero has no meaning here.
A weekend sailor setting an annual sailing budget: the base covers recurring kit care, the trips line prices the paid days out, and the year total is the budget to plan around. A sailing-club treasurer fixing a member allowance: the base is the shared kit allowance and the per-trip price is the group charter rate. A parent pricing a child's sailing program: the base is the monthly club fee and the sailing trips are the paid days on the water. A benefits manager comparing sport allowances: the same base-plus-trips shape prices sailing next to cycling, swimming, rowing and climbing on equal terms.
The arithmetic is exact for the inputs entered; the judgement is in the inputs. A base that bundles one-off purchases, a trip count that mixes covered and paid trips, or a per-trip price that omits gear hire will each move the answer by exactly the amount of the error, every month. The model does not include travel, lodging, lessons, foul-weather gear, or employer reimbursement caps — price those separately, and re-check the allowance when the base or the per-trip price changes. The recurring amount for sail care, line replacement and small sailing extras: the figure set each month. Paid sailing trips are not part of the base — they have their own line — and one-off charges such as a new sail belong in the month they are charged, not spread across the base.
Enter 0 sailing trips, or a $0.00 cost per sailing trip, and the total is the base alone: $65.00 a month and $780.00 over 12 months on these defaults. A covered sailing trip makes its trips line $0.00 by definition, and that is the honest edge, not a missing input.
The average month, if you want the year total to be right: 2 trips a month here means 24 trips a year. Enter the busiest month only when you are pricing that month itself, and say so, or the year total will overstate the season.
No. A membership paid yearly is a lump sum, not a monthly base. Either leave it out and price paid trips only, or spread it yourself across the months it covers and add it to the base — but never do both, or the membership is counted twice.
Because the per-trip price applies once per trip: one more trip adds exactly one per-trip charge. The base does not change when trips change, which is why the trips line, not the base, carries the seasonal swing.
Yes, as a pricing check: enter the employer's base and per-trip rate and compare the year total with the employer's cap. The calculator prices whatever figures you enter; it does not check any employer's rules.
