Public vs Private College: 4-Year Cost Compared (2026)

On the defaults — public tuition $11,950 a year with $5,000 of grants, private tuition $45,000 a year with $20,000 of grants, four years, 6.39% — public costs $27,800 over four years and private costs $100,000, so public wins by $72,200. Put in the tuition and grants for the colleges you are comparing and the calculator works out the four-year total for each, the gap, and what the loan costs month by month. This one compares the four-year cost of public and private college in one place: the college-savings-calculator page is the SAVINGS — how much to save each month for college — not the cost of the college itself; the student-loan-calculator page is the LOAN — one loan, one payment — not two colleges side by side; the 529-plan-calculator page is the PLAN — what a 529 plan grows to — not the tuition it has to pay; and the college-vs-trade-school page is the PATH — college against trade school — not public against private. No public-vs-private college calculator exists on this site — this one is the first.

Public vs private college calculator

The four-year total is the net cost a year — tuition minus grants and scholarships, never below zero — times the years, and the loan is the full net total repaid over ten years at the rate you enter. On the defaults — public $11,950 a year with $5,000 of grants, private $45,000 a year with $20,000 of grants, four years, 6.39%; public nets $6,950 a year and $27,800 over four years, private nets $25,000 a year and $100,000 over four years, so public wins by $72,200. The four-year totals and the loan payments are two different answers, never the same number — the totals are the sticker price after grants, and the loan is what the totals cost when you borrow them in full. A grant bigger than the tuition makes the net cost zero, never negative, so the calculator says so plainly, and a zero loan rate means no interest at all. The calculator shows all of it with notes, never hides it.

Public in-state tuition and fees for one year — the default is $11,950, the 2025-26 College Board figure.

Private nonprofit tuition and fees for one year — the default is $45,000, the 2025-26 College Board figure.

Grants and scholarships for the public college, per year — the default is $5,000. Grants cut the net cost, never below zero.

Grants and scholarships for the private college, per year — the default is $20,000. Private colleges often grant more, because their sticker price is higher.

The annual loan interest rate — the default is 6.39%, the 2025-26 federal undergraduate Direct Loan rate.

How many years the degree takes — the default is 4. A five-year degree costs a fifth year of net tuition.

What does public wins by $72,200 mean?

It means that, on the defaults, a four-year degree costs $27,800 at a public college and $100,000 at a private one — the same degree, the same four years, $72,200 apart. The public net is $6,950 a year after $5,000 of grants, and the private net is $25,000 a year after $20,000 of grants: the private college grants four times as much, but its sticker price is nearly four times higher, so the grant does not close the gap. Borrowed in full over ten years at 6.39%, the public degree costs $314.11 a month and the private degree $1,129.89 a month — $9,893.16 of interest against $35,586.91. The four-year totals and the loan payments are two different answers, never the same number: the totals are the sticker price after grants, and the loan is what the totals cost when you borrow them in full.

Three things to check before you trust the number

Compare net price, not sticker price. A private college at $45,000 a year with $20,000 of grants costs $25,000 a year — more than a public college at $11,950 with $5,000 of grants, which costs $6,950 a year. The grant matters, but the net price is the number you actually pay.

The loan costs more than the degree. Borrowing the full public total of $27,800 costs $37,693.16 over ten years — $9,893.16 of interest — and borrowing the full private total of $100,000 costs $135,586.91 — $35,586.91 of interest. The gap grows from $72,200 to $97,893.75 once interest is counted.

Grants are not guaranteed forever. The calculator takes the grants you enter every year, for every year of the degree. If a grant is only for the first year, or needs a GPA to keep, enter the average across all four years instead of the first year alone.

Worked example

On the defaults: public tuition $11,950 a year, $5,000 of grants; private tuition $45,000 a year, $20,000 of grants; four years; 6.39%.

  1. Public net a year: $11,950 − $5,000 = $6,950.
  2. Private net a year: $45,000 − $20,000 = $25,000.
  3. Public total: $6,950 × 4 = $27,800 (unrounded 27800.000000).
  4. Private total: $25,000 × 4 = $100,000.
  5. Gap: $100,000 − $27,800 = $72,200.
  6. Public monthly payment: $27,800 over 10 years at 6.39% is $314.11 a month (unrounded 314.109673), $37,693.16 repaid, $9,893.16 of interest.
  7. Private monthly payment: $100,000 over 10 years at 6.39% is $1,129.89 a month (unrounded 1129.890909), $135,586.91 repaid, $35,586.91 of interest.
  8. Smallest private grants for the private total to be no more than the public total: $38,500 — at $38,500 the private total is $26,000 and private wins by $1,800, and at $38,000 it is $28,000 and public wins by $200.
  9. Largest public tuition for the public total to be no more than the private total: $30,000 — at $30,000 both totals are $100,000, a Tie, and at $30,100 the public total is $100,400.

Every branch, checked

The reverses, worked backwards

What the defaults assume

The defaults are the College Board’s 2025-26 published tuition and fees — public four-year in-state $11,950 a year, private nonprofit four-year $45,000 a year — from Trends in College Pricing 2025, Table CP-1, with $5,000 of public grants and $20,000 of private grants a year, four years, and the 2025-26 federal undergraduate Direct Loan rate of 6.39%. They are a starting point, not a benchmark: your colleges may cost more or less, your grants may be larger, and your degree may take five years. Change the six numbers to your own and the calculator recomputes instantly. Compare net price, not sticker price — and remember that the loan costs more than the degree.

These notes repeat in every explainer section because this page is built to be read start to finish: the defaults are national averages, not your colleges; compare net price, not sticker price; the loan costs more than the degree; and grants are not guaranteed forever.

Who uses this

Accuracy & limitations

The calculator does the arithmetic exactly — the net cost a year is tuition minus grants, never below zero, the four-year total is the net cost times the years, and the loan is the standard ten-year amortisation at the rate you enter — and every figure on this page is checked against an independent model. What it cannot do is know your colleges: the defaults are national averages from the College Board, and your public college may charge out-of-state tuition, your private college may grant more, and room, board and books are not counted here at all. It also takes one loan at one rate — a mix of federal and private loans needs the student-loan-calculator page for each loan, and saving in advance needs the college-savings-calculator page. And the public monthly payment is $314.11, unrounded 314.109673 — the page prints the unrounded figure so the rounding does not mislead you.

The four-year total is the net cost a year — tuition minus grants, never below zero — times the years. On the defaults — public $11,950 a year with $5,000 of grants, private $45,000 a year with $20,000 of grants, four years, 6.39% — public costs $27,800 and private costs $100,000, so public wins by $72,200. Smallest private grants for the private total to be no more than the public total: $38,500. Largest public tuition for the public total to be no more than the private total: $30,000. Smallest years for the gap to reach at least $50,000: 3. Smallest public grants for the public total to be no more than $25,000: $5,700. Largest loan rate for the public monthly payment to stay at or below $350: 8.75%. Largest years for the gap to stay at or below $100,000: 5. Frequently asked questions

How much does public college cost vs private college?

On the 2025-26 College Board figures, public four-year in-state tuition and fees are $11,950 a year and private nonprofit are $45,000 a year. After typical grants — $5,000 public, $20,000 private — the four-year totals are $27,800 and $100,000, so public wins by $72,200.

What is net price?

Net price is tuition minus grants and scholarships — the number you actually pay. A private college at $45,000 a year with $20,000 of grants costs $25,000 a year, and a public college at $11,950 with $5,000 of grants costs $6,950 a year.

How much grant money makes private college as cheap as public?

On the defaults, $38,500 a year of private grants — at $38,500 the private total is $26,000 and private wins by $1,800, and at $38,000 it is $28,000 and public still wins by $200.

What is the federal student loan interest rate for 2025-26?

6.39% fixed for undergraduate Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans, for loans first disbursed on or after July 1, 2025 and before July 1, 2026. The calculator uses it as the default rate.

How much is the monthly payment on a $27,800 student loan?

At 6.39% over ten years it is $314.11 a month, $37,693.16 repaid in total and $9,893.16 of interest. The student-loan-calculator page works it out for any loan.

Does this include room and board?

No — it compares tuition and fees after grants only. Room, board and books are roughly the same at most colleges, so they rarely change which side wins; add them to both sides if you want the full cost of attendance.

How do I save for college in advance?

The college-savings-calculator page works out how much to save each month, and the 529-plan-calculator page shows what a 529 plan grows to.

Is college or trade school cheaper?

Trade school is usually far cheaper and shorter — the college-vs-trade-school page compares the two paths side by side.
