Playhouse calculator
Put your playhouse length, width, wall height and waste in: an 8 ft by 6 ft playhouse with 5 ft walls is 140 sq ft of wall — 4.38 sheets exact, 5 sheets with 10% waste.

On the defaults — an 8 ft by 6 ft playhouse, 5 ft walls, 10% waste — you need 5 sheets of siding. This is the playhouse tool: measure the walls once, allow for the door and window cuts, and buy the sheets once — a half-sided playhouse waits for no second delivery.
Put your playhouse length, width, wall height and waste in: an 8 ft by 6 ft playhouse with 5 ft walls is 140 sq ft of wall — 4.38 sheets exact, 5 sheets with 10% waste.
It means five sheets side an 8 ft by 6 ft playhouse with 5 ft walls, with room for cuts. The walls themselves are 140 square feet, since twice the sum of the sides, 28 ft of perimeter, times 5 ft of height is 140; one 4 ft by 8 ft sheet covers 32 square feet, so the exact need is 4.38 sheets, and with 10% waste for the door and window cuts that becomes 4.82, rounded up to 5 whole sheets because sheets are sold by the sheet, not by the fraction. The spare sheet is not spare stock exactly — it is the sheet the door opening and the window consume in cutting, so a playhouse sided to the exact sheet runs short before the last wall.
| Output | Formula | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Wall area | 2 × (length + width) × height | 140 sq ft — 2 × 14 × 5. |
| Sheet area | 4 ft × 8 ft | 32 sq ft — one sheet. |
| Sheets | wall area ÷ sheet area, plus waste, rounded up | 5 sheets — 4.38 × 1.10, rounded up. |
First, check the sheet size you are actually buying: 4 ft by 8 ft is the common siding sheet, but a smaller sheet covers less wall each and raises this playhouse past 5 sheets, while the wall area never changes. Second, remember the count follows the walls, not the floor: an 8 ft by 6 ft playhouse is 48 sq ft of floor but 140 sq ft of wall, and a playhouse measured by its floor under-orders badly. Third, judge the waste honestly: a plain playhouse fits 10%, but a playhouse with a door and a window can want 15%, since every opening takes a cut. Trim, roofing and the floor are bought separately — see the shed calculator for the same maths on a bigger building.
8 ft long, 6 ft wide, 5 ft walls, 10% waste. Perimeter: 2 × (8 + 6) = 28 ft. Wall area: 28 × 5 = 140 sq ft. Sheet area: 4 × 8 = 32 sq ft. Sheets exact: 140 ÷ 32 = 4.38. With waste: 4.38 × 1.10 = 4.82, rounded up to 5 sheets. In practice that means buying 5 sheets, and expecting the last one to go on door and window cuts. If the same playhouse had 6 ft walls instead, the need would rise to 6 sheets, but the playhouse sided would be identical in footprint.
With a 10 ft long playhouse instead of 8 ft, the wall area rises to 160 sq ft and the need to 6 sheets. With an 8 ft wide playhouse, the wall area rises to 160 sq ft and the need to 6 sheets, since the perimeter is the same either way. With 6 ft walls, the wall area rises to 168 sq ft and the need to 6 sheets. With 5% waste, the exact need stays 4.38 sheets and the buy stays 5 sheets, since 4.38 × 1.05 is 4.59 and still rounds up to 5. Playhouse size, wall height and waste each move the order on their own, so a wrong height figure is as costly as a wrong measurement.
The length behind 5 sheets is 8 ft: at 6 ft the need is 5 sheets (6 ft × 6 ft playhouse, 5 ft walls, 120 sq ft, 3.75 sheets exact, 10% waste); at 10 ft it is 6 sheets (10 ft × 6 ft playhouse, 5 ft walls, 160 sq ft, 5 sheets exact, 10% waste). The height behind 5 sheets is 5 ft: at 4 ft the need is 4 sheets (8 ft × 6 ft playhouse, 4 ft walls, 112 sq ft, 3.5 sheets exact, 10% waste); at 6 ft it is 6 sheets (8 ft × 6 ft playhouse, 6 ft walls, 168 sq ft, 5.25 sheets exact, 10% waste). The waste behind 5 sheets is 10%: at 5% the need is 5 sheets (8 ft × 6 ft playhouse, 5 ft walls, 140 sq ft, 4.38 sheets exact, 5% waste); at 15% it is 6 sheets (8 ft × 6 ft playhouse, 5 ft walls, 140 sq ft, 4.38 sheets exact, 15% waste). Each reverse moves one input and holds the rest, so the step is exactly one dimension, height or waste change.
The defaults assume an 8 ft by 6 ft rectangular playhouse, 5 ft walls, 4 ft by 8 ft sheets, and 10% waste for cuts and openings. They do not assume trim, roofing, a door or a floor — a playhouse with a wide door counts its door trim separately, and the roof is bought by the roof, not by the sheet.
The arithmetic is exact for the inputs entered; the judgement is the wall height and the waste. Real playhouses have doors, windows and corner boards, and the sheet on the pallet overrides any planning figure; a playhouse measured gross over-orders, and a waste figure read off a plain playhouse under-orders one with a door and a window. Treat 5 sheets as the planning order for an 8 ft by 6 ft playhouse at 5 ft walls and 10% waste, and allow 15% for a playhouse cut with a door and a window.

5 sheets at 5 ft walls and 10% waste. The wall area is 140 sq ft; at 32 sq ft per sheet that is 4.38 sheets exact, and 4.38 × 1.10 = 4.82, rounded up to 5.
Double the sum of the sides for the perimeter, multiply by the wall height for the wall area, divide by the sheet area, add the waste and round up. An 8 ft by 6 ft playhouse at 5 ft is 2 × 14 × 5 = 140 sq ft, or 5 sheets at 10% waste.
10% for a plain playhouse, 15% for one with a door and a window. Every opening takes a cut, so the waste moves the order directly.
No — this calculator counts siding sheets only. Trim, roofing, the door and the floor are counted separately, by the playhouse.
Round up: sheets are sold by the sheet, and the spare sheet is the cutting stock. A playhouse sided to the exact sheet runs short before the last wall.
Work out each wall separately, add the wall areas, and divide by the sheet area. The square footage calculator handles the area step wall by wall.
