The pattern is easy once you see it: almost every sleeping pillow is 20 inches deep, and only the length changes — Standard 26 inches, Super Standard 28, Queen 30, King 36, Body 54 — and pillows lie with that length running across the bed. That is why two Queen pillows (30 inches each) fill a 60-inch Queen bed exactly, why two Standard pillows leave 8 inches of bare mattress, and why a King bed at 76 inches still only takes two King pillows with room to spare. The exceptions are the Euro, a 26-inch square meant for propping up in bed rather than sleeping on, and the Travel pillow, a small 12 by 16 inches built to fit a bag, not a bed. Area follows the same story: the Queen's 600 square inches (4.17 square feet) is the default on this page, the King gives 720 square inches (5.00 square feet), the Body gives a full 1,080 square inches (7.50 square feet), and the little Travel pillow gives just 192 square inches (1.33 square feet).
Pillow width vs bed width: the fit that trips people up
Pillow shopping goes wrong at the bed, not the pillow. Two King pillows side by side measure 72 inches — wider than a 60-inch Queen bed by a full foot — so on a Queen bed they overhang the edges by 6 inches a side and slide off in the night. That same pair fits a 76-inch King bed with 4 inches to spare, and exactly fills a 72-inch California King. Two Queen pillows (60 inches together) exactly fill a Queen bed, which is why Queen-bed sleepers often add a Euro in front for looks rather than a third sleeping pillow. And a Euro on a Twin bed is a display choice only: at 26 inches wide it leaves just 12 inches of a 38-inch Twin, so it crowds out the pillow you actually sleep on. Measure the bed width first, divide by the pillow width, and the number that fits — with no fractions — is your answer.
Output · formula · meaning
| Output | Formula | What it means |
| Dimensions | Width × length, in inches | Queen: 20 × 30 in at the defaults. |
| Area, square inches | Width × length | 20 × 30 = 600 sq in for a Queen pillow. |
| Area, square feet | Square inches ÷ 144 | 600 ÷ 144 = 4.17 sq ft for a Queen pillow. |
| Pillowcase | Matched to pillow size | Queen pillow takes a Queen pillowcase; a Standard case will not close over it. |
| Fit across the bed | Bed width ÷ pillow length, rounded down | 60 ÷ 30 = 2 Queen pillows across a Queen bed. |
| Pair fit | 2 × pillow length vs bed width | Two King pillows (72 in) overhang a Queen bed (60 in) by 12 in. |
Who uses this
- The shopper buying pillowcases: learns a Queen pillow needs a Queen case and a King pillow needs a King case, before the case arrives too small.
- The couple upgrading to King pillows: checks the pair against their Queen bed and discovers the 12-inch overhang before buying.
- The guest-room setter: fits two Queen pillows across a Queen bed exactly, and adds a Euro in front for looks.
- The traveller packing light: sees a Travel pillow is just 192 square inches and confirms it fits the bag, not the bed.
Accuracy & limitations
These are standard US bedding dimensions, the sizes most American brands cut to. Individual brands vary by an inch or two — a “Queen” from one maker can measure 20 by 28 or 20 by 32 — and filled pillows plump up beyond their flat measurements, so a stuffed King pillow can look wider than 20 inches on the bed. Pillowcase sizing varies the same way: a generous Standard case may accept a Super Standard pillow. Treat this chart as the standard to shop against, then check the maker's own label for the pillow in your hands.
