Payroll Tax Calculator: Net Pay, Withholding & Cost

$5,000 a month of gross pay is $3,949.17 of take-home pay after $1,050.83 withheld — federal $418.33, Social Security $310.00, Medicare $72.50 and state $250.00. Work out your net pay and what you cost your employer: the federal brackets, the Social Security cap, the Medicare add-on and the employer share. This one is the PAYROLL-TAX tool — the tax on a paycheck — the federal-income-tax-calculator page is the FEDERAL-INCOME-TAX tool — the federal tax alone — not the whole paycheck; the take-home-pay-calculator page is the TAKE-HOME-PAY tool — the net pay from any gross — not the tax breakdown; and the paycheck-calculator page is the PAYCHECK tool — the pay per period — not the employer cost.

What does $3,949.17 of take-home pay mean?

It means that of every $5,000.00 you earn in a month, $1,050.83 never reaches your bank account: $418.33 of federal income tax, $310.00 of Social Security, $72.50 of Medicare and $250.00 of state tax. What is left — $3,949.17 a month, $47,390.00 a year — is the take-home pay. The federal tax is the only progressive piece: your first $12,400 of taxable income is taxed at 10%, the next slice at 12%, and so on, so the rate on your last dollar is higher than the rate on your first. Social Security and Medicare are flat percentages, and the state tax here is a flat rate you type in, because every state taxes pay differently.

Three things to check before you trust the number

The standard deduction comes first. On $60,000.00 a year, the first $16,100 is not taxed at all — the taxable income is $43,900.00, not $60,000.00. That is why the federal tax is $5,020.00 a year and not 22% of the whole salary: only the dollars above $50,400 of taxable income reach the 22% bracket. If you itemize deductions or claim credits, the taxable income falls further and the tax falls with it.

Social Security stops, Medicare does not. Social Security is 6.2% of pay only up to the $184,500 wage base for 2026 — at $15,375.00 a month the tax stops growing, and every dollar above that is Social Security-free. Medicare is 1.45% of every dollar with no cap, plus another 0.9% on wages over $200,000 a year for a single filer. At $20,000.00 a month the Social Security is capped at $953.25 and the Medicare is $320.00 — the extra 0.9% is in there. At $25,000 a month the federal tax alone is $67,689.50 a year — the 35% bracket is in there.

Your employer pays payroll tax too. The $386.00 a month your employer pays — $310.00 of Social Security, $72.50 of Medicare and $3.50 of FUTA unemployment tax — never appears on your payslip, but it is part of what you cost: $5,386.00 a month in all. When you compare a salary with freelance work, the freelance rate has to cover both halves, because a self-employed worker pays the employer share as well.

Worked example

On the defaults: $5,000 a month, single filer, 5% state tax.

  1. The annual pay: $5,000 × 12 is $60,000.00.
  2. The taxable income: $60,000.00 − $16,100 standard deduction is $43,900.00.
  3. The federal tax: 10% of $12,400 is $1,240.00, plus 12% of the remaining $31,500.00 is $3,780.00 — $5,020.00 a year, $418.33 a month.
  4. Social Security: 6.2% of $5,000 is $310.00 a month.
  5. Medicare: 1.45% of $5,000 is $72.50 a month.
  6. State tax: 5% of $5,000 is $250.00 a month.
  7. The take-home: $5,000 − $1,050.83 is $3,949.17 a month.

And the other way: $5,067.46 a month of gross pay takes home $4,000.00 a month, $15,375.00 a month is exactly where Social Security stops, and $6,525.12 a month of gross pay takes home $60,000.00 a year.

Every branch, checked

The reverses, worked backwards

What the defaults assume

The defaults are $5,000 a month of gross pay for a single filer in 2026, with a 5% flat state income tax and no extra withholding. The federal tax uses the 2026 single-filer brackets (10% to $12,400, 12% to $50,400, 22% to $107,475, 24% to $205,250, 32% to $260,600, 35% to $651,350, 37% above) on the pay minus the $16,100 standard deduction. Social Security is 6.2% up to the $184,500 wage base; Medicare is 1.45% on all pay plus 0.9% on annual wages over $200,000; FUTA is 0.6% on the first $7,000 of annual wages, employer only. The model does not count 401(k) or other pre-tax deductions, health-insurance premiums, local taxes, or tax credits — those all move the take-home. Monthly figures are the annual figures divided by 12 and rounded to cents, so 12 × $3,949.17 is $47,390.04, four cents above the annual $47,390.00: a rounding artifact, not an error. Change the gross pay and the state rate to your own before you trust the answer.

These notes repeat in every explainer section because this page is built to be read start to finish: the standard deduction comes first; Social Security stops and Medicare does not; and your employer pays payroll tax too.

Accuracy & limitations

Figures are the model's own totals on the numbers you type, computed from unrounded values: the federal tax is the 2026 single-filer brackets applied to the annual pay minus the $16,100 standard deduction, Social Security is 6.2% up to the $184,500 wage base, Medicare is 1.45% plus 0.9% over $200,000 a year, the state tax is a flat rate you type, and FUTA is 0.6% on the first $7,000 of annual wages. The displayed monthly figures are rounded to 2dp, and 12 × $3,949.17 is $47,390.04, four cents above the annual $47,390.00 — a rounding artifact from dividing the annual figures by 12. The model assumes a single filer taking the standard deduction, with no pre-tax deductions, no credits, no local tax and no state-specific rules — real state taxes are rarely a flat rate, and several states have no income tax at all. Frequently asked questions

How much payroll tax do I pay on $5,000 a month?

$1,050.83 a month is withheld — federal $418.33, Social Security $310.00, Medicare $72.50 and state $250.00 — leaving $3,949.17 of take-home pay. The employer pays $386.00 more on top.

How do you calculate payroll tax?

Take the annual pay, subtract the $16,100 standard deduction, and run the 2026 brackets on what is left: $60,000.00 of pay is $43,900.00 taxable, which is $5,020.00 of federal tax a year. Then add 6.2% Social Security, 1.45% Medicare and the state rate.

What is the Social Security wage base for 2026?

$184,500 — Social Security is 6.2% of pay only up to that annual amount, which is $15,375.00 a month. Pay above the base is Social Security-free.

How much does my employer pay in payroll tax?

$386.00 a month on $5,000.00 of pay — $310.00 of Social Security, $72.50 of Medicare and $3.50 of FUTA. The hire costs $5,386.00 a month in all.

What gross pay do I need to take home $4,000 a month?

$5,067.46 a month of gross pay, at a 5% state tax rate for a single filer. The reverses show the gross pay for any take-home target.

Why is my take-home less than my salary divided by 12?

Because $1,050.83 a month is withheld before the money reaches you — on $5,000.00 of pay the take-home is $3,949.17. The salary is the gross; the take-home is what is left.

Does payroll tax include state tax?

It can — this calculator adds a flat state rate you type, 5% on the defaults, which is $250.00 a month. Real state taxes are rarely flat, and several states have no income tax at all.

What is FUTA?

The Federal Unemployment Tax Act tax — 0.6% on the first $7,000 of each worker's annual wages, paid by the employer only. On $5,000.00 a month it is $3.50 a month.
