How many pavers you need
A paver covers width times length, divided by 144, in square feet. The raw count is the area times 144, divided by the paver’s square inches. Counts round up — you cannot buy part of a paver — and the billable count adds the waste allowance on top of the exact raw count, then rounds up again. The cost is the billable count times the price per paver.
At the defaults — area 200 sq ft, paver 6 by 9 in, waste 10%, price $2.50 a paver — one paver covers 54 ÷ 144 = 0.375 sq ft, so there are 2.67 pavers a square foot and 267 pavers per 100 sq ft. The raw count is 200 × 144 ÷ 54 = 533.33, rounded up to 534 pavers; with 10% waste it is 533.33 × 1.10 = 586.67, rounded up to 587 pavers, which costs 587 × $2.50 = $1,467.50.

The worked example, line by line
Setup: area 200 sq ft, paver 6 by 9 in, waste 10%, price $2.50 a paver.
Line 1 — one paver. 6 × 9 = 54 sq in, and 54 ÷ 144 = 0.375 sq ft.
Line 2 — pavers per square foot. 144 ÷ 54 = 2.67.
Line 3 — the raw count. 200 × 144 ÷ 54 = 533.33, rounded up to 534 pavers.
Line 4 — the billable count. 533.33 × 1.10 = 586.67, rounded up to 587 pavers.
Line 5 — the cost. 587 × $2.50 = $1,467.50.
Reverse: 300 pavers of 6x9 cover 300 × 0.375 = 112.50 sq ft; 1,000 pavers of 12x12 cover 1,000.00 sq ft; a $1,500 budget buys 600 pavers, covering 225.00 sq ft of 6x9; 100 sq ft needs 267 pavers raw, 294 with 10% waste.
Every branch, checked
Area 100 sq ft: the raw count is 100 × 144 ÷ 54 = 266.67, rounded up to 267 pavers; with waste it is 294 pavers for $735.00. Half the area is half the pavers, plus the rounding.
Area 500 sq ft: the raw count is 1,333.33, rounded up to 1,334 pavers; with waste it is 1,467 pavers for $3,667.50. Big patios scale almost exactly, because the rounding is a paver or two.
12x12 pavers: one paver covers exactly 1.00 sq ft, so 200 sq ft needs exactly 200 pavers raw and 220 with waste, for $550.00. Big pavers are the cheapest count, but the cuts at the edges are bigger.
4x8 pavers: one paver covers 0.2222 sq ft, so 200 sq ft needs exactly 900 pavers raw and 990 with waste, for $2,475.00. Small pavers cost more because there are nearly twice as many of them.
Waste 0%: the billable count is the raw count, 534 pavers, for $1,335.00. No allowance means any broken paver is a trip back to the yard.
Waste 15%: the billable count is 614 pavers for $1,535.00. The extra 5% over the default is 27 pavers and $67.50.
Price $1.50/paver: the count is the same 587 pavers, so the cost is $880.50. The paver price moves the total dollar for dollar.
Price $4.00/paver: the count is the same 587 pavers, so the cost is $2,348.00. A dear paver is the dearest lever on the page.
Reverse — the other way round: 300 pavers of 6x9 cover 112.50 sq ft before waste; 1,000 pavers of 12x12 cover 1,000.00 sq ft; a $1,500 budget at $2.50 a paver buys 600 pavers, covering 225.00 sq ft of 6x9; 100 sq ft needs 267 pavers raw, 294 with 10% waste.
What the defaults assume
The model assumes the area, the paver size, the waste percentage and the price per paver you enter, and it counts the pavers only — not the base, the sand, the edging or the labour. It rounds every count up, because you cannot buy part of a paver, and it applies the waste to the exact raw count, not to the rounded one. Per-100-sq-ft figures are rounded whole pavers. Rounding convention: money is rounded to cents, pavers are whole numbers, square feet are shown to two or four decimals, and all figures are computed from unrounded values, rounded only for display.

Who uses this
- The homeowner planning a patio: they learn 200 sq ft needs 587 pavers for $1,467.50 — so they know the order size, and they check the 100-sq-ft case at 294 pavers before measuring the yard.
- The landscaper quoting a walkway: they learn a 4x8 paver needs 4.50 pavers a square foot and a 12x12 needs 1.00 — so they know the small paver costs more in count, and they check the $1,500-budget case at 600 pavers before pricing the job.
- The DIYer comparing paver sizes: they learn 12x12 pavers cost $550.00 for 200 sq ft against $2,475.00 for 4x8 — so they know the size is the price, and they check the 12x18 row at 67 pavers per 100 sq ft before choosing.
- The contractor ordering materials: they learn 10% waste adds 53 pavers and 15% adds 80 — so they know the allowance is the buffer, and they check the 500-sq-ft case at 1,467 pavers before placing the order.
Accuracy & limitations
The math is exact for the numbers you enter: the raw count is the area times 144 divided by the paver’s square inches, the billable count is the raw count with waste, rounded up, and the cost is the billable count times the price per paver. What the model cannot do is measure your yard for you: check the area, because a 100-sq-ft patio and a 500-sq-ft patio need very different orders. It counts the pavers only, not the base, the sand, the edging or the labour, and a herringbone or diagonal pattern cuts more than a straight run, so use 15% waste for those.
