Dry to the touch is not dry — the four times that matter
Paint dries in stages, and mixing them up is how walls get ruined: dry to the touch is when the surface no longer feels tacky; recoat is when the next coat can go on without lifting the one below; light use is when the room can be used again — furniture back, pictures hung, but nothing scrubbed; full cure is when the paint has hardened all the way through and can be washed. Latex is dry to the touch in 1 hour and ready to recoat in 4 hours — but it takes 21 days to fully cure, so don’t scrub the walls for three weeks. The table below is the consensus of several manufacturer and guide sources: where sources give a range, the table shows the range, and the calculator uses one model value per cell — the midpoint or the standard value — and says so. On the defaults — latex / acrylic, 2 coats, starting 9:00 AM on Sunday, October 25, 2026, normal conditions — the last coat goes on at Sun Oct 25, 1:00 PM, it is dry to touch at Sun Oct 25, 2:00 PM, ready for light use at Mon Oct 26, 1:00 PM, and fully cured at Sun Nov 15, 1:00 PM.
| Paint type | Dry to touch | Recoat | Light use | Full cure |
|---|
| Latex / acrylic | 1 h | 2–4 h | 24 h | 14–30 days |
| Oil-based / alkyd | 6–8 h | 24 h | 48–72 h | 7–30 days |
| Chalk paint | 30 min–1 h | 1–2 h | 24 h | 7–21 days |
| Spray paint | 15–30 min | 1 h | 24 h | 24–48 h |
| Latex primer | 30 min | 1–4 h | 4 h | 24 h |
| Epoxy (2-part floor) | 8–24 h | 24 h | 24–48 h | 3–7 days |
| Exterior latex | 1–2 h | 4–6 h | 48 h | 14–30 days |
At the defaults — paint latex / acrylic, coats 2, start 9:00 AM, conditions normal (×1.0) — the model times are touch 1 h, recoat 4 h, light use 24 h, full cure 21 d; the last coat is 4.0 h after the start, dry to touch 5.0 h, light use 28.0 h, fully cured 508.0 h. Check the identities: last coat = start + (coats − 1) × recoat × factor; dry to touch = last coat + touch × factor; light use = last coat + light use × factor; fully cured = last coat + cure days × 24 × factor. The factor scales all times as an estimate: cold or humid conditions multiply every time by 1.5, hot and dry conditions multiply by 0.75. The page computes clock times from the visitor’s current date at the chosen start hour; the figures on this page use Sunday, October 25, 2026, 9:00 AM as the reference start.
The worked example, line by line
Setup: paint latex / acrylic, coats 2, start 9:00 AM Sun Oct 25, conditions normal (×1.0).
Line 1 — the model times. Latex: touch 1 h, recoat 4 h, light use 24 h, full cure 21 d.
Line 2 — the last coat. Coat 1 goes on at 9:00 AM; coat 2 waits one recoat time, 4 h: 9:00 AM + 4 h = Sun Oct 25, 1:00 PM.
Line 3 — dry to touch. Last coat + touch: 1:00 PM + 1 h = Sun Oct 25, 2:00 PM.
Line 4 — light use. Last coat + light use: 1:00 PM + 24 h = Mon Oct 26, 1:00 PM.
Line 5 — fully cured. Last coat + cure: 1:00 PM + 21 × 24 h = Sun Nov 15, 1:00 PM.
Reverse: 3 coats of latex fit in a 9:00 AM–6:00 PM day — coats at 9:00 AM, 1:00 PM, 5:00 PM; the 4th would be 9:00 PM, past 6:00 PM. Hours from the start to light use (2 coats, normal): latex 28.0 h, oil 96.0 h, chalk 26.0 h, spray 25.0 h, primer 5.0 h, epoxy 72.0 h, exterior 52.0 h. Latest start so latex 2 coats reach light use by Sat Oct 31, 9:00 AM: Fri Oct 30, 5:00 AM (light use is 28 h after the start). Fully cured from the Oct 25 9:00 AM start (2 coats): latex Sun Nov 15, 1:00 PM; oil Mon Nov 9, 9:00 AM; chalk Sun Nov 8, 11:00 AM; spray Tue Oct 27, 10:00 AM; primer Mon Oct 26, 10:00 AM; epoxy Mon Nov 2, 9:00 AM; exterior Tue Nov 24, 1:00 PM. Fastest to light use (2 coats, normal): primer, 5.0 h from the start (Sun Oct 25, 2:00 PM); slowest is oil at 96.0 h.
Every branch, checked
1 coat latex: last coat Sun Oct 25, 9:00 AM, dry to touch 10:00 AM, light use Mon Oct 26, 9:00 AM, fully cured Sun Nov 15, 9:00 AM. One coat means no recoat wait — the last coat is the first coat.
3 coats latex: last coat Sun Oct 25, 5:00 PM, dry to touch 6:00 PM, light use Mon Oct 26, 5:00 PM, fully cured Sun Nov 15, 5:00 PM. Each extra coat adds one recoat time, 4 h, to every later time.
Oil 2 coats: last coat Mon Oct 26, 9:00 AM, dry to touch 5:00 PM, light use Thu Oct 29, 9:00 AM, fully cured Mon Nov 9, 9:00 AM. Oil is slow: a 24-hour recoat pushes the second coat to the next morning.
Spray 2 coats: last coat Sun Oct 25, 10:00 AM, dry to touch 10:30 AM, light use Mon Oct 26, 10:00 AM, fully cured Tue Oct 27, 10:00 AM. Spray is the fastest to cure — 2 days — because the coats are thin.
Epoxy 2 coats: last coat Mon Oct 26, 9:00 AM, dry to touch 9:00 PM, light use Wed Oct 28, 9:00 AM, fully cured Mon Nov 2, 9:00 AM. Epoxy takes a day to recoat and a week to cure — plan the floor around it.
Chalk 2 coats: last coat Sun Oct 25, 11:00 AM, dry to touch 12:00 PM, light use Mon Oct 26, 11:00 AM, fully cured Sun Nov 8, 11:00 AM. Chalk dries fast to the touch but still needs two weeks to cure.
Primer 2 coats: last coat Sun Oct 25, 10:00 AM, dry to touch 10:30 AM, light use Sun Oct 25, 2:00 PM, fully cured Mon Oct 26, 10:00 AM. Primer is the fastest of all — light use the same afternoon, cured the next morning.
Exterior 2 coats: last coat Sun Oct 25, 1:00 PM, dry to touch 3:00 PM, light use Tue Oct 27, 1:00 PM, fully cured Tue Nov 24, 1:00 PM. Exterior latex takes the longest to cure — 30 days — because it is built to weather.
Latex 2 coats cold/humid ×1.5: last coat Sun Oct 25, 3:00 PM, dry to touch 4:30 PM, light use Tue Oct 27, 3:00 AM, fully cured Thu Nov 26, 3:00 AM. Cold or damp air stretches every time by half — the cure lands five weeks out.
Latex 2 coats hot/dry ×0.75: last coat Sun Oct 25, 12:00 PM, dry to touch 12:45 PM, light use Mon Oct 26, 6:00 AM, fully cured Tue Nov 10, 6:00 AM. Hot, dry air pulls every time in by a quarter — but the cure is still 15 days out, so don’t rush it.
Reverse — the other way round: 3 coats of latex fit in a 9:00 AM–6:00 PM day; hours to light use are latex 28.0 h, oil 96.0 h, chalk 26.0 h, spray 25.0 h, primer 5.0 h, epoxy 72.0 h, exterior 52.0 h; the latest start for light use by Sat Oct 31, 9:00 AM is Fri Oct 30, 5:00 AM; the fastest to light use is primer at 5.0 h and the slowest is oil at 96.0 h.
What the chart assumes
The chart assumes the model values in the table — the midpoint or the standard value where sources give a range — and it assumes the conditions factor scales every time by the same amount. It assumes the coats are applied on schedule, one recoat time apart, and it assumes the paint is applied at the stated thickness on a prepared surface. It leaves out the paint’s age, the colour (dark colours cure slower), the surface (bare wood drinks paint faster than sealed drywall), and the ventilation — a closed room dries slower than an open one. With 5 coats of latex, the last coat is Mon Oct 26, 1:00 AM, dry to touch 2:00 AM, light use Tue Oct 27, 1:00 AM, fully cured Mon Nov 16, 1:00 AM — five coats push the work past midnight. With 1 coat of oil, the last coat is Sun Oct 25, 9:00 AM, dry to touch 5:00 PM, light use Wed Oct 28, 9:00 AM, fully cured Sun Nov 8, 9:00 AM. With 1 coat of epoxy, the last coat is Sun Oct 25, 9:00 AM, dry to touch 9:00 PM, light use Tue Oct 27, 9:00 AM, fully cured Sun Nov 1, 9:00 AM. With fewer than 1 coat or more than 5, or a start hour outside 0–23, the calculator shows an error, not a timeline, because the model is a coats model and it needs a coat count in range.

Who uses this
- The homeowner painting a bedroom on a Saturday: they learn latex 2 coats from 9:00 AM means the last coat at 1:00 PM and light use the next day at 1:00 PM — so they know the room is usable on Sunday, and they check the 3-coat branch (5:00 PM last coat) before adding a third coat and losing the evening.
- The DIYer painting a garage floor with epoxy: they learn epoxy 2 coats means the last coat on Monday at 9:00 AM and light use on Wednesday at 9:00 AM — so they know the car stays out for three days, and they check the 1-coat edge (Tue Oct 27, 9:00 AM light use) before deciding one coat is enough.
- The painter working in a cold, damp house: they learn cold or humid conditions stretch latex 2 coats to a 3:00 PM last coat and a Thu Nov 26 cure — so they know to heat the room or wait, and they check the hot/dry branch (Tue Nov 10, 6:00 AM cure) before painting on a hot day and expecting the same times.
- The renter who needs the room back by Saturday: they learn the latest start for light use by Sat Oct 31, 9:00 AM is Fri Oct 30, 5:00 AM — so they know Friday morning is the last chance, and they check the primer row (5.0 h to light use) before choosing the paint that gets the room back fastest.
Accuracy & limitations
The times are the consensus of several manufacturer and guide sources: where sources give a range, the table shows the range, and the calculator uses one model value per cell — the midpoint or the standard value. Latex: touch 1 h, recoat 4 h, light 24 h, cure 21 d. Oil: touch 8 h, recoat 24 h, light 72 h, cure 14 d. Chalk: touch 1 h, recoat 2 h, light 24 h, cure 14 d. Spray: touch 0.5 h, recoat 1 h, light 24 h, cure 2 d. Primer: touch 0.5 h, recoat 1 h, light 4 h, cure 1 d. Epoxy: touch 12 h, recoat 24 h, light 48 h, cure 7 d. Exterior: touch 2 h, recoat 4 h, light 48 h, cure 30 d. What the chart cannot do is know your room: check the temperature and the humidity, because cold or damp air stretches every time by half — and check the paint tin, because the manufacturer’s times are the ones that count for your batch. It assumes the model values, one recoat time between coats, and the conditions factor scaling every time equally. It leaves out the paint’s age, the colour, the surface, and the ventilation. It is a drying-time reference, not a painting guide: for how much paint you need, see the paint coverage chart; for what it will cost, see the paint cost calculator.

Method: consensus of multiple manufacturer/guide sources (parent-verified 2026-10-25). The table shows RANGES where sources give ranges; the calculator uses one MODEL value per cell (the midpoint or the standard value). Table (paint type | dry to touch | recoat | light use | full cure): Latex / acrylic | 1 h | 2–4 h | 24 h | 14–30 days — model 1 h / 4 h / 24 h / 21 d. Oil-based / alkyd | 6–8 h | 24 h | 48–72 h | 7–30 days — model 8 h / 24 h / 72 h / 14 d. Chalk paint | 30 min–1 h | 1–2 h | 24 h | 7–21 days — model 1 h / 2 h / 24 h / 14 d. Spray paint | 15–30 min | 1 h | 24 h | 24–48 h — model 0.5 h / 1 h / 24 h / 2 d. Latex primer | 30 min | 1–4 h | 4 h | 24 h — model 0.5 h / 1 h / 4 h / 1 d. Epoxy (2-part floor) | 8–24 h | 24 h | 24–48 h | 3–7 days — model 12 h / 24 h / 48 h / 7 d. Exterior latex | 1–2 h | 4–6 h | 48 h | 14–30 days — model 2 h / 4 h / 48 h / 30 d. Timeline from the start (coat 1 at the start): coat k is applied at start + (k−1) × recoat × factor; the last coat is at start + (coats−1) × recoat × factor; dry to touch = last coat + touch × factor; light use = last coat + light use × factor; fully cured = last coat + cure days × 24 × factor. Conditions factor: normal ×1.0, cold or humid ×1.5, hot and dry ×0.75 — the factor scales all times as an estimate.
