Put your boxes and minutes a box in: 8 boxes at 12 minutes a box take 96 minutes — 1.6 hours of packing.

On the defaults — 8 boxes at 12 minutes a box — packing time is 96 minutes, or 1.6 hours. This is the packing time tool: multiply the boxes by the minutes a box for the minutes, divide by 60 for the hours — a move guessed from the box count alone tells you nothing until the pace behind it is known.
Put your boxes and minutes a box in: 8 boxes at 12 minutes a box take 96 minutes — 1.6 hours of packing.
It means eight boxes, each packed in twelve minutes, take ninety-six minutes in total, which is one point six hours of packing. The boxes set how many containers are filled, the pace sets the time each box takes, and the hour is a fixed sixty minutes: one more box adds a full twelve minutes without slowing down any box, and a slower pace adds time to every box without adding a single extra box. The only judgement is the pace — 12 minutes must be the pace actually packed, wrapping, filling, taping and labelling included, not the quickest box alone.
| Output | Formula | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Total minutes | boxes × minutes a box | 96 minutes — 8 × 12. |
| Total hours | minutes ÷ 60 | 1.6 hours — 96 ÷ 60. |
First, check the boxes honestly: 8 boxes must be boxes actually packed, not boxes counted twice because a half-filled box and a top-up box were tallied as two full boxes when they are packed as one job — a box counted that was never packed adds twelve phantom minutes to the day. Second, check the pace against the contents, not the hope: 12 minutes must be the pace actually packed, including wrapping fragile items, taping the base and the lid, and labelling the box, because a box of books takes longer than a box of bedding, and a pace borrowed from the quickest box misstates the total by the whole difference on every box. Third, check the hour against the day: 1.6 hours of packing is real packing time, not loading the van or driving to the new place — the figure to plan around is when the last box is taped shut, including time for finding the tape once it runs out.
8 boxes, 12 minutes a box. Minutes: 8 × 12 = 96 minutes. Hours: 96 ÷ 60 = 1.6 hours. In practice that means starting ninety-six minutes before the packing must be done if it must be finished before the movers arrive — the number to set against the day's plan, and the 96-minute figure to use when a ninth box is weighed against a faster pace.
At 10 boxes instead of 8, the time rises to 120 minutes — 2 hours. At 10 minutes a box instead of 12, the time falls to 80 minutes — 1.33 hours. At 6 boxes instead of 8, the time falls to 72 minutes — 1.2 hours. At 15 minutes a box instead of 12, the time rises to 120 minutes — 2 hours.
The boxes behind 96 minutes are 8: at 6 boxes the time is 72 minutes; at 10 boxes it is 120 minutes. The pace behind 96 minutes is 12 minutes: at 10 minutes a box the time is 80 minutes; at 15 minutes a box it is 120 minutes — the pace never touches the box count, only the time each box takes.
The defaults assume 8 boxes packed back to back at 12 minutes a box, with no gap for hunting for tape, taking a break, or running out of bubble wrap. They do not assume a half box, a box skipped because it was packed yesterday, or a whole-house move — a house heavy with books and fragile items needs longer than 1.6 hours from first box to last, so treat 96 as the packing time, not the whole move.
The arithmetic is exact for the inputs entered; the judgement is the box count and the true pace. Real packing varies with contents, wrapping, and interruptions — so treat 96 as the planning time for eight boxes at a true 12-minute pace, and check it against one timed box before quoting it to anyone else.

96 minutes on the defaults: 8 boxes × 12 minutes = 96 minutes, or 1.6 hours of packing.
Any box packed as one job: kitchen boxes, bedroom boxes, and a box of books make a natural set. Split the move the way it is actually packed, not by shelf — a half box topped up later is one box for this maths, not two.
It should if that is part of packing the box: enter the full time a box actually takes, including wrapping fragile items, taping the base and lid, and labelling. A 9-minute fill with 3 minutes of wrapping and taping is a 12-minute box.
Divide the hour by the pace: 1 hour fits 5 full boxes at 12 minutes, and a 10-minute pace fits 6 boxes in an hour — the pace decides the count, not the list.
No: loading is carrying packed boxes to the van. The 96 minutes here covers packing only; a loading-only job is faster per box, so use a moving-time estimate for that part of the day.
