What does 7/2 mean?
It means three and a half: 3 1/2 is three wholes plus one half, and three wholes is six halves, so six halves plus one half is seven halves. The mixed number and the improper fraction are the same amount written two ways — 3 1/2 is the way people say it, 7/2 is the way arithmetic wants it. Whenever you add, subtract, multiply or divide mixed numbers, convert them to improper fractions first, do the arithmetic, and convert the answer back: the mixed form is for reading, the improper form is for working.
Three things to check before you trust the number
The sign lives on the whole part. −1 1/2 means −(1 + 1/2), which is −3/2. If you put the minus on the fraction part instead, −1 + 1/2 is −1/2, a different number entirely. Always write the sign with the whole part, and never enter a negative numerator — the calculator refuses one and tells you why.
Add and subtract need a common denominator. 1 2/3 + 2 1/4 is 5/3 + 9/4, and thirds and quarters do not add directly: convert both to twelfths, 20/12 + 27/12, and the answer is 47/12, which is 3 11/12. If you add the whole parts and the fraction parts separately without a common denominator, you get the wrong answer whenever the denominators differ.
Multiply and divide do not need a common denominator — but divide means flip and multiply. 2 1/2 × 1 1/3 is 5/2 × 4/3 = 20/6 = 10/3, which is 3 1/3. 3 1/2 ÷ 1 1/4 is 7/2 × 4/5 = 28/10 = 14/5, which is 2 4/5: the second fraction is turned upside down and the two are multiplied. Dividing by a fraction that is less than one gives an answer bigger than the number you started with, and that is correct.
Worked example
On the defaults: convert 3 1/2, then add 1 2/3 + 2 1/4.
- Convert 3 1/2: multiply the whole part by the denominator: 3 × 2 = 6.
- Add the numerator: 6 + 1 = 7.
- Keep the denominator: 7 over 2 is 7/2.
- Convert 1 2/3: 1 × 3 + 2 = 5, over 3: 5/3.
- Convert 2 1/4: 2 × 4 + 1 = 9, over 4: 9/4.
- Common denominator: 3 and 4 share 12: 5/3 is 20/12 and 9/4 is 27/12.
- Add: 20/12 + 27/12 = 47/12.
- Convert back: 47 ÷ 12 is 3 remainder 11, so 47/12 is 3 11/12.
- Check the subtraction: 3 1/2 − 1 1/4 is 7/2 − 5/4 = 14/4 − 5/4 = 9/4, which is 2 1/4.
- Check the multiplication: 2 1/2 × 1 1/3 is 5/2 × 4/3 = 20/6 = 10/3, which is 3 1/3.
- Check the division: 3 1/2 ÷ 1 1/4 is 7/2 × 4/5 = 28/10 = 14/5, which is 2 4/5.
- The reduction: 2 4/6 is 8/3, which is 2 2/3, because 4/6 is 2/3 in lowest terms.
Every branch, checked
- 3 1/2 = 7/2: 3 1/2 = 7/2: 3 1/2 = 7/2. 3 1/2 = 7/2 — 3 × 2 + 1 = 7, over 2: three whole halves plus one half is seven halves.
- 7/4 = 1 3/4: 7/4 = 1 3/4: 7/4 = 1 3/4. 7/4 = 1 3/4 — 7 ÷ 4 is 1 remainder 3, so seven quarters is one whole and three quarters.
- 1 2/3 + 2 1/4 = 3 11/12: 1 2/3 + 2 1/4 = 3 11/12: 1 2/3 + 2 1/4 = 3 11/12. 1 2/3 + 2 1/4 = 3 11/12 — 5/3 + 9/4 is 20/12 + 27/12 = 47/12, which is 3 wholes and 11 twelfths.
- 5 3/8 = 43/8: 5 3/8 = 43/8: 5 3/8 = 43/8. 5 3/8 = 43/8 — 5 × 8 + 3 = 43, over 8: five wholes is forty eighths, plus three eighths.
- 3 1/2 − 1 1/4 = 2 1/4: 3 1/2 − 1 1/4 = 2 1/4: 3 1/2 − 1 1/4 = 2 1/4. 3 1/2 − 1 1/4 = 2 1/4 — 7/2 − 5/4 is 14/4 − 5/4 = 9/4, which is 2 wholes and a quarter.
- 2 1/2 × 1 1/3 = 3 1/3: 2 1/2 × 1 1/3 = 3 1/3: 2 1/2 × 1 1/3 = 3 1/3. 2 1/2 × 1 1/3 = 3 1/3 — 5/2 × 4/3 is 20/6 = 10/3, which is 3 wholes and a third.
- 3 1/2 ÷ 1 1/4 = 2 4/5: 3 1/2 ÷ 1 1/4 = 2 4/5: 3 1/2 ÷ 1 1/4 = 2 4/5. 3 1/2 ÷ 1 1/4 = 2 4/5 — 7/2 ÷ 5/4 is 7/2 × 4/5 = 28/10 = 14/5, which is 2 wholes and four fifths.
- 2 4/6 = 8/3: 2 4/6 = 8/3: 2 4/6 = 8/3. 2 4/6 = 8/3 — the typed input keeps its 4/6, but the result is reduced: 8/3 is 2 2/3, because 4/6 is 2/3 in lowest terms.
- 0 3/4 → 3/4: 0 3/4 → 3/4: 3/4 = 3/4. 0 3/4 → 3/4 — a zero whole part prints as a plain fraction: there is no whole to carry, so the answer is just three quarters.
- −1 1/2 = −3/2: −1 1/2 = −3/2: −1 1/2 = −3/2. −1 1/2 = −3/2 — the sign lives on the whole part: −(1 + 1/2) is −3/2, not −1 + 1/2.

What the defaults assume
The defaults are convert 3 1/2, which is 7/2, and the add example 1 2/3 + 2 1/4, which is 3 11/12 (47/12). They are a starting point, not a standard: your mixed numbers may be bigger or smaller, positive or negative, and the right answer for you is the one your numbers describe. Change the mode and the whole parts, numerators and denominators to your own and the calculator recomputes instantly. Put a mixed number in, read the improper fraction, and check the working before you use the answer.
These notes repeat in every explainer section because this page is built to be read start to finish: the sign lives on the whole part; add and subtract need a common denominator; and divide means flip and multiply.

Who uses this
- A cook scaling a recipe — 1 2/3 cups plus 2 1/4 cups is 3 11/12 cups, so the doubled batch needs just under four cups, not three and three quarters.
- A carpenter adding measurements — 3 1/2 inches minus 1 1/4 inches is 2 1/4 inches, and the cut is marked from the reduced fraction, not the unreduced one.
- A student checking homework — 2 1/2 × 1 1/3 is 3 1/3, and the worked example shows exactly where the 10/3 comes from, step by step.
- A teacher explaining the sign convention — −1 1/2 is −3/2, and the edge cases show why a negative numerator is refused and the sign belongs on the whole part.
Accuracy & limitations
The calculator uses exact integer fraction arithmetic — numerator and denominator pairs, reduced by their greatest common divisor, never floats — so every figure on this page is exact: 3 1/2 is 7/2, 1 2/3 + 2 1/4 is 47/12, and 2 4/6 reduces to 8/3, with no rounding anywhere. What it cannot do is read your mind about the sign: the convention is that the sign lives on the whole part, so −1 1/2 is −3/2, and a negative numerator is refused with a plain message. It also cannot handle a denominator of 0, which is not a fraction at all, or division by zero, which has no answer. Very large inputs are refused past a sane range so the arithmetic stays exact. It is a calculator, not a textbook: it shows the working, but the understanding comes from the worked example above.

Frequently asked questions
How do you convert a mixed number to an improper fraction?
Multiply the whole part by the denominator and add the numerator, then keep the denominator: 3 1/2 is 3 × 2 + 1 = 7, over 2, so it is 7/2. Put your mixed number into the calculator above and it does the arithmetic for you, with the working shown.
How do you convert an improper fraction to a mixed number?
Divide the numerator by the denominator: the whole part is the quotient and the fraction part is the remainder over the denominator. 7/4 is 1 remainder 3, so it is 1 3/4. Choose “improper fraction to mixed number” in the calculator above and type the numerator and denominator.
How do you add mixed numbers with unlike denominators?
Convert both to improper fractions, find a common denominator, add, and convert back: 1 2/3 + 2 1/4 is 5/3 + 9/4, which is 20/12 + 27/12 = 47/12, which is 3 11/12. The worked example above runs it step by step, and the how-to-calculate-mixed-fractions guide works it the same way.
How do you subtract mixed numbers?
Convert both to improper fractions, find a common denominator, subtract, and convert back: 3 1/2 − 1 1/4 is 7/2 − 5/4, which is 14/4 − 5/4 = 9/4, which is 2 1/4. If the answer is negative, the sign lives on the whole part: 1 1/4 − 2 1/2 is −1 1/4.
How do you multiply mixed numbers?
Convert both to improper fractions and multiply straight across, then reduce: 2 1/2 × 1 1/3 is 5/2 × 4/3 = 20/6 = 10/3, which is 3 1/3. No common denominator is needed for multiplication.
How do you divide mixed numbers?
Convert both to improper fractions, flip the second one upside down, and multiply: 3 1/2 ÷ 1 1/4 is 7/2 × 4/5 = 28/10 = 14/5, which is 2 4/5. Dividing by a fraction smaller than one gives an answer bigger than the number you started with, and that is correct.
What does a negative mixed number mean?
The sign lives on the whole part: −1 1/2 means −(1 + 1/2), which is −3/2. Never enter a negative numerator — put the sign on the whole part instead, and the calculator will refuse a negative numerator and tell you why.
Why does 2 4/6 become 2 2/3?
Because the result is always reduced to lowest terms: 4/6 is 2/3, so 2 4/6 is 2 2/3, which is 8/3. The summary keeps the number you typed — 2 4/6 = 8/3 — so you can see both.
