The 60-second rule
Multiply by 3,600. That is the entire conversion: 1 hour = 60 minutes, 1 minute = 60 seconds, so 1 hour = 60 × 60 = 3,600 seconds — exactly, always, by definition. Going back: divide seconds by 3,600. 2.5 hours × 3,600 = 9,000 seconds. 90,000 seconds ÷ 3,600 = 25 hours. An 8-hour work day is 28,800 seconds; a 12-hour shift is 43,200; a full week is 604,800.
Worked examples
2.5 hours to seconds. 2.5 × 3,600 = 9,000 seconds — also 150 minutes and 0.1042 days. The classic decimal-hours case: half hours, quarter hours, and 1.75-hour meetings all convert the same way.
An 8-hour work day. 8 × 3,600 = 28,800 seconds of shift — the number behind labor-cost math, call-center capacity planning, and “how many seconds of my day did that meeting take” (a 30-minute meeting: 1,800 seconds).
90,000 seconds back to hours. 90,000 ÷ 3,600 = 25 hours — 1,500 minutes, 1.0417 days. The reverse direction matters for timers, server logs, and fitness apps that report durations in raw seconds.

Output · formula · meaning
| Output | Formula | What it means |
| Seconds | hours × 3,600 | 3,600 at the default — the forward conversion, exact. |
| Minutes | hours × 60 | 60 at the default — the intermediate unit most people check first. |
| Days | hours ÷ 24 | 0.0417 at the default — how the hours sit inside a calendar day. |
| Weeks | hours ÷ 168 | 0.0060 at the default — one week is 168 hours, 604,800 seconds. |
| Hours (reverse) | seconds ÷ 3,600 | 1 at the default — raw seconds back into human-scale hours. |
| Minutes (reverse) | seconds ÷ 60 | 60 at the default — the reverse check on the same input. |
Who uses this
- The payroll clerk converting 2.5 overtime hours to 9,000 seconds for a time-tracking system that bills in seconds.
- The developer whose API timeout is set in seconds: 0.5 hours of cache TTL = 1,800 — typed into the config, not guessed.
- The fitness coach turning a 90-minute session (1.5 h = 5,400 s) into interval-timer inputs.
- The student checking homework: “how many seconds are in 4 hours?” — 14,400, with the formula shown so the method sticks.
Accuracy & limitations
The hour is exactly 3,600 seconds by definition — this conversion is mathematically exact, not an estimate. Leap seconds are not counted: UTC occasionally inserts a leap second, so a real clock-hour spanning one can be 3,601 seconds long; the calculator uses the standard civil hour. It does not know about daylight-saving transitions (23- or 25-hour days) or calendar dates — for clock-time durations use the hours between times calculator. Very large inputs (beyond about 1 billion hours) are refused as likely typos.

Frequently asked questions
How many seconds are in an hour?
3,600 — exactly. 1 hour = 60 minutes and 1 minute = 60 seconds, so 60 × 60 = 3,600. This is a definition, not a measurement, so it never changes.
What is the formula to convert hours to seconds?
Seconds = hours × 3,600. That is the whole formula. For 2.5 hours: 2.5 × 3,600 = 9,000 seconds. To go the other way: hours = seconds ÷ 3,600.
How many seconds are in 2.5 hours?
9,000 seconds. Multiply 2.5 × 3,600. The same pattern works for any decimal: 1.75 hours = 6,300 seconds, 0.25 hours = 900 seconds.
How many seconds are in a 24-hour day?
86,400 seconds — 24 × 3,600. A full week (168 hours) is 604,800 seconds.
Can I convert seconds back to hours?
Yes — type the seconds into the second field and the calculator divides by 3,600. 90,000 seconds = 25 hours (1,500 minutes).
Are leap seconds included?
No. The calculator uses the standard civil hour of exactly 3,600 seconds. Real UTC hours occasionally contain a leap second (3,601 s), but for scheduling, billing, timers, and homework the standard hour is the correct one.
How many seconds are in an 8-hour work day?
28,800 seconds — 8 × 3,600. A 12-hour shift is 43,200 seconds. Useful for labor-cost math and time-tracking systems that bill in seconds.
